Gut Reactions: (Teenage Mutant) NINJA TURTLES

New teaser brings the good, the bad, and the ugly

Editorial Opinion

The first real footage of Jonathan Liebesman's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has finally gone public, so I thought I'd grab some screenshots, and share just some of my thoughts on what we've seen.

On the whole, it looks basically how I expected, neither good, nor bad, but clearly trying to fit right in with the rest of the superhero franchises in the market. And as such, there's almost a generic quality to this teaser trailer, with a lot of it lacking a sense of style for something easy to throw right at general audiences. However, given the overwhelming venom this production has taken from fanboys, I'd say even a handful of "This looks pretty good" comments marks a huge success for the filmmakers. Changing minds can be tough. To their credit, its not the train-wreck I feared it would be.

But I want to dig in on some key things.

The Japanese influence seems to still be there. Perhaps new villain Eric Sachs is a sort of ‘collector of antiquities’ with a personal affinity for Feudal Japan in particular. Details are obviously scarce, but this villain's role in the story is not only the most drastic change so far, but seems to have a major effect on all of the plot and origin of the movie. Actor William Fitchner has confirmed he is indeed The Shredder, so it will be interesting to see how or if Oroku Saki plays a role in this at all. At least the armor kicks ass.

The Turtles are huge!
The traditional depiction of the guys normally has them either average-height, or slightly shorter at around  5ft tall, but it looks like the boys will tower over April and others with their size, which kinda freaks me out! Not that they look bad. The CGI/live-action hybrid proved to be a good choice, and the motion capture so far, looks great. Leonardo especially looks like a boss.  But I question the logistics of things like the turtles being able to be stealthy or hide anywhere at such a large size. I guess we can forget about them using trench coats and fedoras to walk among the people. Or to even fit through manholes…

Been hearing a lot of "They're ugly!" True, the lips and noses are...different, but for me, the complaint of ‘ugly’ doesn't’ apply.  The TMNT have never been known for being “pretty”. . Just look at the initial reaction to the Nickelodeon toon, and things like Donnie’s gap teeth. Every new iteration of the ninja turtles takes some getting used to.

"Heroes are not born, they are created. That's what your father and I were trying to do."

At the relief of fans everywhere, it looks like the alien origins of the turtles have been dropped or re-written completely, to be more suitable to the lore we all know and love. We’ve got our lab, and we’ve got our mutagen, we've got TCRI. But we may be getting even more than that. According to the trailer, Sachs may be directly involved with the creation of the turtles, something that seems like it was intentional instead of an accident. This along with a mystery thread involving April O’Niel’s father also working on the project, reeks a little of The Amazing Spider-Man reboot, so I’m not going to be too enthusiastic about this reinvention if that is the case.

This ain’t your daddy’s foot clan.

In some brief clips, what I thought was an ordinary gang of hoodlums, looks like will be this movie’s version of the Foot Clan.  It looks like they’re packing automatics- One of a slew of modernized liberties this film is attempting. The masks are interesting, but they remind me a little bit of the Immortals from 300, and could be another example (read: Red Flag) of the movie borrowing from other things, not having some style of its own. An army of these guys terrorizing the public, and police barricades, and giant structures being destroyed, this trailer is very familiar, and very evocative of too many things I’ve seen before like Transformers and even The Dark Knight Rises. I do appreciate the scale of the movie, which looks like it’s going to go for a bigger scope than we’ve seen in a turtle movie. I just hope this isn't a case of the film being a bunch of ripped off stuff, and the only original ideas are the terrible ones.

April O'Neil looks fine (Megan Fox always does) and there may be plenty of nods to past turtles iconography, from her yellow jacket, to a subway station rescue, and even the presence of cartoon creations like Will Arnett's Vernon. Not quite sure what the turtles are doing out of the city and up in the snowy mountains, but that's what seeing the movie is for. So take all my opinions with a grain of salt.  We'll see how the final product shakes out of course. But so far, I remain cautiously optimistic.

Great article. For me, I'm just looking for some fun. I'm not expecting anything more or less other than some enjoyable action packed adventure. And for a teaser, it did it's job. Get you excited.

"reeks a little of The Amazing Spider-Man reboot"

Exactly how I felt when I heard that in the trailer not really a huge fan of the whole thing. Kind of the same thing they are doing with the new cartoon making April quasi related with the turtles and what not I don't really like that. Also I agree Leo looks like a complete and utter bad ass in the trailer.

I think they look fine. It was a little weird seeing Michaelangelo take off his mask. Been a Turtle fan since I was a kid. Never seen one of them with their mask off.....so yeah.....kinda freaky. Me and my son will check this out, but im not expecting to like it more than the first TMNT. Im about to go watch that movie. Been a while.

Always been a Turtles fan. I think the movie will be good, sadly it looks like something that in the end I will walk out of the theater saying, "Meh." To me I'm getting a heavy SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER feel. One of the movies that isn't going for anything special, and will be there just to be there, but hey, I haven't seen it yet. I think the originals will end up being better though sadly.

I thinks it looks great thus far. Man how incredible would it be if Rocksteady and Bebop showed up. Also Krang, and because of Bay, voiced by Hugo Weaving.

Y'know, I've been a fan of the Turtles since I was a little kid, so, 25 years roughly? I'm 32 now, not sure when they came out. Sometime in the 80's.

Anyway, I love the Turtles. They're a part of my childhood, and even my adult life as I ALWAYS check out all the new cartoons with them. Some iterations I have liked, others not so much. I obviously loved the original cartoon as a kid. I loved the first two live action movies (the first one still being a personal favorite), and I absolutely love the new animated series (It also doesn't hurt that I have a 4 year old daughter that loves it too. I enjoy sitting down and watching it with her.) I've even gone back and collected a lot of the original black and white comics (my absolute favorite iteration of the characters.)

My point is, I've seen a lot of different takes on the Turtles throughout my life and unfortunately I'm not really a big fan of what they are doing with this movie. The look of the turtles is just "off" to me. They are too drastically different looking. I'm not even talking about the different types of clothes they are wearing. I actually think thats kind of a cool idea. I'm talking about the turtles themselves. They just don't look right and I can't figure out why.

Also, the changes that have been made to Shredder and the Foot Clan are almost unforgiveable. (By the way, I find it a little weird that Shredder is always used as the arch-nemesis type character. While he does have the biggest emotional and personal connection to the turtles and Splinter, in the original comics, he was only in the first two issues, then died. His clone returned once, but other than that, he wasn't an ongoing enemy, even though he was the best enemy.) But aside from that, they've made the Foot more like a street gang than ninjas. They've basically Americanized the whole idea of the Foot. Again, this is almost a deal breaker for me. I'll have to see the movie to make a final judgement on that, though. (Yes, I will still see this movie.)

All in all, I was a supporter of this movie and couldn't wait to see what was being done. Now that I do see it, I almost wish it wasn't being made. If the new animated series taught us anything, its that some things don't need to be changed to be successful. The old take and story of the turtles just works. Don't reinvent the wheel.

Thanks folks! My expectations are already pretty low, so they can only go up from here. Anything redeeming they can pull off in the movie will be good for me.

Bulletproof Monk! oh god! lol

@Corndog:
I think it's the lips and noses that make them look off. They've never really had those before.

Only possible reason why I would watch this movie is Megan Fox (I have always thought the turtles were one of the dumbest ideas ever). She looks good, but so far I'm not seeing either enough skin or tight clothing, so will probably wait till it hits cable.
