Disney Predict $190 Million Loss On THE LONE RANGER; Tease More Unexpected Marvel Movies
Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp may blame critics for the commercial failure of The Lone Ranger, but Disney now look set to lose as much as $190 million on the big budget flop. Regardless, the studio believes that they have only reached "the tip of the iceberg" when it comes to Marvel movies!
During a conference call to discuss their third quarter fiscal earnings, Disney revealed that they expect to lose between $160 - 190 million due to the dismal box office performance of The Lone Ranger. The film cost over $215 million to produce and has so far earned only $176 million worldwide. However, Bob Iger cited Iron Man 3 as one of their big budget tentpoles which managed to succeed this year after it grossed over $1.2 billion, adding that "We think ‘The Avengers’ helped 'Iron Man 3'." They also believe that owning Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm will ensure that their upcoming releases help them stand out in what looks set to be another two crowded years at the box office. However, when it comes to Marvel, Iger claimed that the company has only reached "the tip of the iceberg" when it comes to their comic book adaptations, highlighting Guardians of the Galaxy as a movie which will introduce a lot of new characters to moviegoers. As the studio hold the rights to everyone from Black Panther to Daredevil and Doctor Strange, expect a lot more to come from them over the next few...decades?
