Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige and director Kenneth Branagh have chosen their THOR and it's Chris Hemsworth, who can currently be seen as George Kirk in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot. He has also just snagged the lead in Red Dawn for United Artists on Thursday. He's currently filming Joss Whedon's horror flick Cabin In The Woods for UA.

The 25-year-old Australian is a virtual unknown here in the United States. Hemsworth is represented by William Ward at ROAR management and agent Ilene Feldman.

Chris had read for the part of Thor but wasn't given a test because a casting director had nixed him early on. Chris' younger brother Liam also had tested for the role of Thor, but Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige passed.

Ward was able to convince Feige to let Chris read again. Kenneth Branagh saw the Chris test and made the final casting decision today.

Thor's release date is currently set for May 20, 2011.

Looks like he could pull it off visually. Not seen him act and I've heard a few bashings against his Star trek role but if Branagh picked him he must have something to bring to screen. Some actors can suck in one role and blow you away in another.

Grif, come on, dude! Don't ya know?? It'll be an alternate timeline on the Red Dawn remake. The Soviet Block didn't colapse. And instead of Cubans, it'll be the Taliban and Al Qaeda invading our southwestern states.

He seems ok..he was good in the small part he had in Trek..at least they finally cast someone!
Stfargher
Stfargher - 5/17/2009, 8:37 AM
he didn't seem to have that authoritative ora in Trek ...it was a small part though...but if he's a good enough actor, he might be able to pull it off...oh god let them not "F" this one up!

He seems like a really good choice. His part was good in Star Trek even though it was small and he looks like a big guy. Can't wait!

Compared to all the choices they shot at us, he's stellar!!! Now go kick Hartnet's ass!!!

Oh and with him as Thor, JENSEN ACKLES IS THE PERFECT CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!!!
Thorfan
Thorfan - 5/17/2009, 9:43 AM
A relatively obscure Marvel Hero and an even more obscure actor to portray him. Risky, very risky. He'd better bring it; and I'm talkin "Hugh Jackman-plus" bring it!!!!

He was alright as George Kirk. I cant picture him with long hair, but at least now we know whos playing Thor.

Anyone remember him in Neighbours? (or was it Home and Away?) That was a while back tho.

Thor has massive potential to be kick-ass and Marvel's choice for the lead looks to be a good one. About time they got someone on board too, now they can go full steam into getting this bad boy off the ground.

Shaman: I don't know about the perfect Captain America, I think Eric Dane might do a slightly better job at it. Besides he snagged Brett Ratner's then fiancée from under him and married her. Anyone who can do a hardcore burn like that on Ratner gets a gold star.

lilej2
lilej2 - 5/17/2009, 10:51 AM
from what i've seen of,he's the real deal in working out and stuff

he's starting out the same way Hugh Jackman did,so i have a feeling he'll be committed to Thor, the character,as Jackman is Wolverine,he'll probally be doing cameos in other Marvel movies and everything for the role cause this is his break out
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 5/17/2009, 10:51 AM
JOSH @ It's not my kinda thing either, ive never gone to the flicks to watch Star Trek before but trust me, TREK will blow you away man!!! It was friggin' Awesome!!! ; )

"he didn't seem to have that authoritative ora in Trek"

He played first officer who got thrown into the Captain's chair in an almost certain death situation. It'd be bad acting if he did have this authoritative aura, it would have came off as cheesy. His acting gave it a sense of realism and humanity, making that scene one of the most captivating opening scenes of just about any movie i've seen in a while.

I couldn't be happier about this choice, after the film I told a friend of mine how his performance was one of my favorite parts of the film.

Bark4Soul: You think someone bodybuilder turned actor can just be taught to act well enough to hold a movie like Thor. Though I am a fan, I admit the concept would easily come off as really cheesy in a live-action film. A great performance by the lead is one of essentials for this movie to be taken seriously.

Now I just hope they get a good actor to play Captain America.

LEEE777: i was planning to go today but changed my mind-star trek has never interested me! still if i dont go and see it this week ill definitely get the blu ray! thanks for the advice man!

SHAMAN: I know that before i disagreed with you about Jensen as Cap (i wanted, and still kinda do, Wentworth Miller) but after watching the season finale of Supernatual where i think he put on the most amazing performance since the show began, i would now be happy to see Jensen as Captain America.

I guess with as many post's as I've seen about this it must be true. I like the lesser known route. Cast Jensen Ackles as Cap and we have a badass group of Avengers.

@icebergslick: He should...

Oh Shit! He sort of looks the part but we wont know until we see him with the locks and mighty hammer. Like the pick and all we need is Odin to be cast and of course, captain america

Peace
