Don Payne Signs Up To Write Script For Marvel Studios' THOR 2!

Following the shocking news that director Kenneth Branagh will not be back to helm the sequel, it has now been revealed that Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and Thor scribe Don Payne will pen the follow up...

I think we were all pretty shocked yesterday when it was revealed by Deadline that Kenneth Branagh would not be returning to helm the sequel to THOR, and that he would instead be returning only as a producer. Well, no word on who his replacement will be just yet, but it has been revealed who will write the script!

Marvel has set Don Payne, one of the credited scribes on the first film, to script the sequel. Payne rewrote Lobo for Warner Bros, and was one of the writers on Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer. His superhero experience started with My Super Ex-Girlfriend. Payne's also co-executive producer on The Simpsons, so there might be a laugh or two in between intergalactic mayhem.

Ok, ok, before you recoil too much at the mention of Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer and My Super Ex-Girlfriend, it is worth remembering that Payne also worked on the first movie, and may not necessarily be the only writer to work on the script as production continues. And c'mon, this is Marvel Studios we're talking about! There's nothing to worry about, right?

With Chris Hemsworth signed up to return in the title role, THOR 2 is set to be released on July 26, 2013!

before people jump to any conclusions because of his involvement with a certain CBM, he was one of the previous writers on Thor so relax. Not surprising he was coming up with the story, wouldn't be surprised if Stentz and Miller come on board again and hopefully JMS is involved in some capacity not sure if his contract with DC stops him or something but he did come up with the story for the first film

Good stuff Josh. If I remember correctly, somebody posted an article on here around the time of THOR's release, indicating that all of the writers involved with the first movie had begun planning the sequel. This could be the first one to "officially" sign on. I wouldn't be surprised at all, in fact I expect to see all of them resign.

As usual, people are getting excited a little too prematurely.

@ Pual-We all know Thors a playa he's got more than one women fighting over him, and I'm sure most of us want a movie set outside of Midgard so whats the point.

This mother[frick]ers going to ruin Thor, I mean at least Shane Black has a good record of movies with action, but this guy all he has good is Thor. Please don't [frick] with The God Of Thunder

I don´t think he will ruin it. If they had chosen a good director to Fantastic Four 2 the movie could work a lot better. As long as he don´t put a "Surtur" cloud I am happy. Matthew Vaugh for the direction.

Goyer had both Nolans to save the day.... who does this guy have??? no one yet. well see....

why does Hollywood have to be filled with hack writers....

If his contribution to the writing of FF2 was in any way, shape, or form the Galactus cloud.........Thor is screwed.

I agree with Intruder and Hawks. No reason to get all worked up. David Goyer wrote Jumper and Balde: Trinity. That didn't stop him from doing good work on the Batman movies. This guy was part of the first Thor movie that most of you enjoyed. I don't see why you're all so quick to predict the doom of a project.

Eh, they picked him because they liked his contributions to the first Thor. Nothing wrong with that. Once they have a director, he'll work out whatever issues he might have with the script. If they get a big director, he'll probably want to alter the story quite a bit. We'll see.

Not going to fully knock him yet since he was part responsible for the first one...But i must admit just to mention his past work..Simpsons? Dosent quite well spell out Mighty Thor 2. The real question is who will direct Thor 2 now?

All those movies with the exception of Thor were not in Marvel's hands. With more control, we've seen that Marvel is doing much better with their characters. I'm not too worried and at least Branagh is still involved in the production of the sequel.
