Dr. Blake to Bridge the Fantasy/Reality Gap in Thor Movie

Dr. Blake to Bridge the Fantasy/Reality Gap in Thor Movie

Insider sources working on the Thor movie have spoiled some interesting news. Sounds like they've found a way to tie the fantastical aspects of a swords and sorcery Thor movie, to the modern day--so the god of thunder can make his appearance in The Avengers. They're bringing in a cameo from Thor's original hammer buddy Dr. Donald Blake.

The original screenplay for Thor, written by Mark Protosevich, had a decidedly "Lord of the Rings" or "Beowulf" feel to it. In other words, they were going to keep Thor in Asgard for the movie and play up the mythological, non-tech, non-modern Thor. It sounded right to most fans worried that this was the best way to bring the thunder god to the masses at the movie theaters.

But since Marvel has announced that Thor would indeed be a member of their Avengers Initiative, indicating that the character would show up in the Avengers movie, comic book movie fans wondered how that would work for the non-nerd audience.

Now, IESB.net has word from a "reliable source" that there's been a recent tweak to the 'Thor' movie script, that has Dr. Donald Blake showing up near the end of the movie.

For the uninitiated, Dr. Blake was the original "modern-day" host for Thor. He discovered the thunder god's mighty hammer Mjolnir in a mountain cave, and read the sacred inscription on its side which verified his worthiness to claim the power of Thor. Since then, Blake's connection to Thor has been severed several times in the comics continuity, but currently their fates are once again intertwined.

IESB also says that director Kenneth Branagh will play a part in the film as well as direct it, but it may be a bit part similar to what Jon Favreau has done in Iron Man.

Lastly, they're debunking rumors that current Thor comics writer J. Michael Straczynski is doing rewrites on the script.

'Thor' will bring down thunder on movie theaters June 2010.

Not to be picky, but "mjolnir" should be capitalized.

I feel the same way about Thor as Robert Downey Jr. does. It's even scare's me a bit seeing as how this movie and character can make or break the whole Avengers deal they are working on. But I trust Branaugh to make something great out of it. We'll see I guess.

That is funny. Thunder crap lol. I think that Don Blake should be involved in the Thor movie it seemed to work fine in the comic book. I just hope that they do this character justice in the movie as Thor has always been one of my favorites. I just have a feeling that he is gonna be some punk that gets his butt kicked like wolverine did in the first X-men movie, that was crap!

I really don't like alter egoes as a concept but if they are going that road, Karl Urban is the best actor they could possibly cast because he has proven time and time again to have the talent to play both THOR and Donald Blake. The worst thing they could do is get two different actors for the same character.

I think that could work Shaman. Karl Urban, I never thought of him for Thor. One Actor for both, not two. This sounds good so Far!

I say they get Vladimir Kulich ("Buiywyf" from 13th Warrior)! He was awesome, and I could totally see him as Thor!

Vladimir Kulich could work, but he looks kind of old for this type of role!

The actor for the D Blake cameo at the end Must be a different one than the actor for the first two hours of that Thor-solo movie, but must be the Same actor that will play the role in the Avengers movie right?

And as for possible Thor sequels, if the studios eventually get interested, they will find a way:
EVERYBODY IN THE HOUSE SAY: AVENGERS ORIGINS:THOR!

Why WOULDN'T you use two different actors to play Thor/Blake? They are two completely different people, after all. The connection they share has NOTHING to do with DNA. I'd be pissed if they DID use the same actor.

Two actors equal lack of depth. It's going to be hard enough to connect with Thor as it is, to have to connect with his alter ego is going to be his death. It's gonna be just like Hulk and it doesn't sell that well. It could still do good but i don't think it will sell to the masses. The Avengers screen writer said he was going "ultimate" with his inspiration. Marvel never debunked this so if they do have Blake as a character in the movie well, they're starting off on the wrong foot here.

Shaman, i agree with you on the two actors meaning lack of depth, but I guess it really depends on how extensive a role Donald Blake has in this movie. How do you tie in his existence to that of Thor's without giving a good bit of screentime. The way the broadcasted this, it doesn't seem like their going to go with the Nick Fury/Tony Stark cameo approach on this one. I'm hoping the addition of Blake doesn't confuse the movie too much... have a big climax and then 20 minutes of tie-in.

Agreed, one person--one actor--not two. Tobey===peter parker==spidey,, Brandon R.===clark kent===superman, ben affleck===matt murdock==dare devil, rob downey jr.==tony stark==ironman.

I think u see where iam going with this.

yeah... Rebecca Romijn- Mystique... wait no. and Joan from Punisher. well we can always fall back on James Marsden, NOPE! Cyclops and Richard White from superman returns. they should have Topher Grace be peter parker. He'd be perfect, the look, the character, he's funny. Toby is nothing like Spidey from the comics

You just gave me the chills! THE 13TH WARRIOR WAS THE WORST MOVIE I'VE SEEN IN AALLLLLLLLL MY LIFE!!!! I'm not saying that your pic was bad (can't remember who he was), but I couldn't remember the name of that movie for the longest time, then i read your post and it all came back.

I'm one of those people that never says a movie is bad, i find the good aspects of a film, but HOLY F@CK THAT MOVIE WAS SH!T ON FILM.

JORDAN-

Good call, Topher should have been spidey all along!! He's got the same comedic style and timing. Well Said!

SHAMAN-

I don't think that Hulk's problem was the two characters, I think both Hulk's problems were ANG LEE. He did a great job artistically, but that clearly wasn't a film for the masses (it's better suited for IFC).
I think that this idea will work, and not only that, i think it's a good one! Just my .02

I think it'll be like the 1st hulk ending, where Donald Blake is helping some paramedics (Hinting to his thing with Human love Jane Foster) and one of the people he helps saves says "Thank you sir, your an angel."

And he says:"No, not an Angel..."

And the whole "host" thing is what the masses don't connect to. It's the same damn concept with DC's Captain Marvel. He sucks because of it and people in general won't buy it. I dunno, it makes it... childish of sorts. It's irrationnal to see the main character also not be the main character but two different halfs of the same collective yet... apart. It's an old concept, that evolved people won't enjoy. Best example of it is the stupid show about Christian Slater on tv... "my own worst enemy" or something like that. The same guy plays two different blokes but different. It's freakin Van Damme's Double Impact all over again. It flat out sucks for our day and age!!!

Actually I think there should be more of the good doctor in the movie than just a cameo. I don't think it's a bad concept at all, I actually find it makes for a much more intellectual movie. In fact I think the whole duality concept is the reason for the success of Nolan's batman movies. Bruce Wayne in nolan's movies isn't just batman in plain clothes like he was in the previous batman films. Bruce Wayne is a person in the new movies and his segments are just as interesting and as important to the story as the segments with batman in them. They are separate entities and they bring different things to the table and the same is true, I think, with Thor. Thor is given his human host as a lesson for his hubris, to correct this trait he is sent to Earth to learn humility. I think this is an essential part of the character and any movie about Thor that doesn't contain this element will be sadly lacking.

I dont think two actors would kill it. Both are two characters are two distinct people with two distinct personalities. Personally, I think insult to my intelligence to say I cant distinguish the two(I know that you weren't trying to insult me PERSONALLY, and yes I DO realize, there are those out there who "don't get it" enough to realize whats going on) and I think most can grasp such a "different" concept. Most of your audience are going to be comic and pop-culture fans anyway. I don't think your going to get many "Gossip Girl" fans attending, unless their boyfriends drag em' there. The prob with Hulk (Ang Lee) was not that it failed as a movie, but more so, it failed as a comic movie. What I mean by this is it was definitely NOT what we were expecting. "Hulk Dogs" (ugh) aside, this movie was BEYOND overacted. There was no climax, no "good" big battle, just a poor comic movie done by someone with no admitted comic history or interest, for that matter. Sorry bout the Hulk rant. Back to Thor. I absolutely think you can pull off the identity thing here, especially if you take cues from the current comic book where you can use a scene where both characters are in conversation with each other in a separate "plane/dimension" (i.e. there subconscious). This would explain that they are different, but the same at the same, be poignant to the story. I don't think "My Own Worst Enemy" was a bad show, I think it failed because the way people watch TV these days is changing w/ the advent of the DVR and internet TV. It's a fact that because people are able to watch programming at THEIR convenience, it makes "Nielsen" ratings almost impossible to interpret. Because of this, MANY good shows are and were unfairly canceled...One of them being "Journeyman" (I personally though that was a fantastically written program)

Of course i didn't mean any disrespect because i would've disrespected myself in the end. I'm a fan of Thor no matter what the concept is. I on the other hand have the ability to put my "wants" aside to see others'. I know for a fact that "the masses" (which need to be attracted for sufficient profit) do not connect to the concept of "the host of a subconscience entity". It has nothing to do with Batman's duality since they are both the same conscience being. I, as a fan hope that it doesn't fail but it is totally the wrong recepy to follow.

what if they got someone like a wrestler, or someone with the build of one obviously, to play the role of Thor?

p.s. it would also obviously have to be a wrestler who has swapped wrestling for acting

The only way this would work is if Loki kicks Thor's ass in the movie and separates him from MJOLNIR in the end - which would tie-in the cloud fx in the HULK movie(some people claim to have seen faces in the clouds at the end of the cave scene when Hulk gets pissed off at the thunder and lightning).

This would also be the perfect way to set up Dr. Blake finding MJOLNIR and somehow freeing or restoring Thor's might in this day and age (which would make room for modern day sequels and a link between Thor and Dr. blake to be developed further in a later movie) setting the course for him to join with the Avengers in an attempt to take out Loki or whatever other baddy they have in mind. Perhaps they'll save the Thor/Loki rematch for a sequel.

Someone whe mentioned Wrestler. They were going to use Triple H as Thor. Vince Mcmahon would probably let him do it after all he is the bosses son in law. The long hair the favorite weapon as a hammer in wrestling. He is born for the role. He was a character in one of the blade movies plus other commercials.

Instead of having two actors or even two identities why not just have Thor. Its not that far fetched for the Thor movie to be set in Asgard/Midgard during the viking age while the Avengers movies is set in modern times. After all Thor is a god and could have just been waiting for a reason to return to Midgard (Earth) to protect Mankind. Like I said he is a god and has a far greater lifespan than mortals. I think this would add to the storyline in that Thor would be completely out of his element in modern society, giving a weakness to a character that has very few. And lets face it we all like our heroes to have a couple flaws and or weaknesses.
