The original screenplay for Thor, written by Mark Protosevich, had a decidedly "Lord of the Rings" or "Beowulf" feel to it. In other words, they were going to keep Thor in Asgard for the movie and play up the mythological, non-tech, non-modern Thor. It sounded right to most fans worried that this was the best way to bring the thunder god to the masses at the movie theaters.
But since Marvel has announced that Thor would indeed be a member of their
Avengers Initiative, indicating that the character would show up in the Avengers movie, comic book movie fans wondered how that would work for the non-nerd audience.
Now,
IESB.net has word from a "reliable source" that there's been a recent tweak to the 'Thor' movie script, that has Dr. Donald Blake showing up near the end of the movie.
For the uninitiated, Dr. Blake was the original "modern-day" host for Thor. He discovered the thunder god's mighty hammer Mjolnir in a mountain cave, and read the sacred inscription on its side which verified his worthiness to claim the power of Thor. Since then, Blake's connection to Thor has been severed several times in the comics continuity, but currently their fates are once again intertwined.
IESB also says that director Kenneth Branagh will play a part in the film as well as direct it, but it may be a bit part similar to what Jon Favreau has done in Iron Man.
Lastly, they're debunking rumors that current Thor comics writer J. Michael Straczynski is doing rewrites on the script.
'Thor' will bring down thunder on movie theaters June 2010.
