G.I. Thor No More

G.I. Thor No More

Apparently Channing Tatum, who will be starring in the G.I. Joe movie this year, was in talks to play Thor--but not anymore...

He told MTV news that he is no longer in the running for the role of the Norse Nutjob..

“I think they’re looking for someone more Nordic-looking,” Tatum said during a press event for his new film, “Fighting.” However, Tatum confirmed that he had indeed been interested in the part, and even met with director Kenneth Branagh about donning the golden locks and toting the mythical hammer.

Ever since Marvel released a public casting-call for “Thor” earlier this year, a number of names have been linked to the role including, most persistently, that of Alexander Skarsgard who certainly matches the “Nordic-looking” requirement. Tatum had no knowledge as to whether Skargard (or anyone else, for that matter) has been offered the role.

Barring an announcement of the lead, work on “Thor” is still certainly moving forward — at least as far as casting rumors would suggest. Last month saw a casting rumor that Natalie Portman had joined the “Thor” lineup, as well as the rumored-casting of Josh Hartnett as lead-villian Loki.

The film also received a release date delay of nearly a year, to June 17, 2011. The updated release gives Branagh a good bit more breathing room and allows him to work in tangent with other directors as Marvel maps out its filmic universe.

As for Tatum, well im sorry but i can only see this as good news! I wouldnt exactly be thrilled to see a veteran of such classics like "Shes The Man" and "Step Up" play The Mighty Thor!

Out of all the people I have heard running for the role, i'd have to say that canadian guy James Preston Rogers is the only man I see playing thor. Hes perfect as far as I'm concerned.

I like Channing Tatum. Even though that sounds like a total girl name. But yeah he isn't really nordic-looking. What role is Natalie Portman supposed to play =[.

Channing Tatum is going to Step Up to Thor... lol... nah.. I need to see more of his work before he can be Thor.

I've heard Natalie is going to play Jane Foster, his nurse but then another article said that is a small role for her to have and that Natalie is going to play Sif, his wife.

I'm glad he's not doing it, no way could he pull off Thor. We need the leader from The 13th Warrior, the one that dies from being poisoned at the end. He was bad ass! Not sure what shape he's in now.

As to Tatum, agreed with rfa: "annoying as hell."

Still betting on Skarsgard, news to come at the beginning of summer. And although Josh Hartnett doesn't seem terrible, I'd rather see someone else for Loki. Sheesh.

@ Grif,

You just posted a comment that was not only relevant but worth posting! But then again you do think April Fools lasts the whole month so this could be one of your "jokes"! It does have your trade mark pessimism though so maybe you're not joking?

Man this board is getting VICIOUS! I hope no young actors frequent it because i doubt their ego's could take the blow!

You guys seem to rip people who have been in Teenie Bopper movies, but those seem to be the ONLY ONES YOU'VE SEEN??? Why are so many of you familiar with STEP-UP?......weird.

I personally thought CHANNING TATUM was good in:
Havoc
Coach Carter
Stop-Loss
and he was great in...
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints

I'm also excited to see Fighting which comes out soon. I do agree however that he doesn't have the right look for Thor, but he could definitely swing CAPTAIN AMERICA.

NOMSANS-

Agreed, especially "If it wasnt for the 'acting' part (which mainly involves the speech of Thor which is highly difficult to pull off) I would say lets hire a wrestler to play Thor."

That is exactly the reason i've been routing for Alexander Skarsgård from the beginning. A Nordic Stage actor with American acting chops!?! Seems like a no-brain! I've been watchin TrueBlood season 1, and he is a bigger guy than i thought, just needs another 30lbs of muscle and he should fit the role perfectly!!!

I have to watch teeny bopper movies... lol... I have a tween!I see Twilight, Harry POtter, Narnia or if not I hve to watch Disney! Bolt, Ratatouie, SpongeBob!C'est La Vie... That's life..What can you do? It's why I love CBM.com My youngest loves Superheroes so I lucked out there! =:)

I like Channing... just not for Thor.

Talontd..I havent seen the movies yet but I will! =:)

@Talontd

I echo what KeepItReal said. I have kids too and must sit through some of these film or suffer an even worse fate! We are not all single and living with our parents, like the stereotypical "comic loving nerd".

However, before we bash these actors we need to remember a certain Jon Travolta. He started out in movies such as "Grease" (that generations "High School Musical") and has now portrayed some fine villains and appeared in some 1st class action movies. So I reserve judgement of these actors but I'd say most need to grow into these kind of roles before they "step up" (see what I did there?)

Nomsams, Sean Bean fits all of your requirements. I won't be mad if they choose someone else as long as they do a good job, but he's still my number one pick. Watch LOTR again - Boromir.

Wheeew! (proverbial sigh of relief)

That could've been bad. Not bad meaning good, but bad meaning terrible. This movie will face enough criticism before it comes out without having to deal with the "Thor stomps the yard" comments.

I am totally behind this Thor Movie. I just hope they find the right guy. Josh Hartnett is definitely not my pick fo Loki. That is just my opinion. If you differ with me. That is ok. But Hartnett would bring in the ladies for ticket sales at least.

Thor weighs 600 lbs and can lift over 200,000 lbs. NONE of the actors that Branaugh clown is vetting look the part. And to top it all off ALL of them are TOO DAMN YOUNG! I wish I could say I didn't care, but I do. I love Thor. He's Marvel's Superman. The thought of them ruining that movie makes me SICK

Holy Sh!t was that funny bro, I couldn't stop laughin for about 5min!!!

@KEEPITREAL

That's cool, I can dig it! I personally don't have any kids (however, i've still seen most of the teenie bopper stuff.....can't help it, i LOVE movies!). It's just funny to see (what I assume to be) grown @ss men sayin, "Tatum sucked in Step-Up!" lol. Check out Saints tho, he was VERY good.

@HOWLETT4

I aint that dude your describing (my folks live on the other side of the country) but, yea that's the stereotype......still kinda embarassing!

Great point about Travolta, no one could could have guessed that he would become the actor he is!

@JUGGERNAUT

Unfortunately, there just aren't guys that big with dramatic acting chops. It sux, i kno. The only ones that even come close are wrestlers, but ABSOLUTELY NO wrestler could swing this dialog, not TripleH, not Cena, and not The Rock.

If your going by NOMSANS list of requirements 2.5 outta 3 ain't that bad. Skarsgård is 6'4", can pull of the dialog, and is Swedish. I really do think we lucked out with this guy!

Grizzly - 4/7/2009, 5:36 PM
basically you have two options. Find some one who looks exactly like thor and suffer severely in acting, or you could find some one who is a damn good actor and resembles thor, sure he might hot be 6'7 and be 280 of solid muscle, but they could be blonde, bearded(my preference for thor), muscular and best of all, be able to act. one of these would make for a good movie, and one would make for a pile of shit. i leave you to decide

Imagine the disappointment of watching Thor tell Loki he got served. All I can picture is that South Park episode. The duck.

I'm totally with you on Skarsgard. He's the best man for the job. And it's true, you don't see many people doing Shakespeare in the park, then hustling to the gym for a power lifting session. It would be funny to see though.

I was releived to hear that the Thor film was pushed back to 2011. No way were they gonna have this ready by next year. I don't know who can potray Thor on the big screen but my pic for Loki is the guy who played opposite Mel Gibson in Patriot. He was a evil muhtha.

At first when i saw the name Skarsgard i thought you were talking about Stellan (Alex's Father). I thought you guys were all on crack but now realize that it's his son. I'm on board, he looks like he could pull it off...

So potentially, we could have a real life father and son playing father and son.....awesome.

The only person who should play Thor is Tyler Mane. Enough said. He has the look, the body size, and he can act!!!
