Speaking with CBR at this years San Diego Comic Con J. Michael Straczynski gives his take on just about everything going on in comics these days. He talks about DC's upcoming 52, his work on Superman, Wonder Woman and his involvement in Marvels
THOR film.
I have transcribed a portion of the interview covering the THOR film below, which starts at around the 10 minute mark. On seeing the THOR movie come to life knowing his story line helped inspire the film... "The book inspired it and I got to work with them on creating the story for the film itself. What was fun about it was when Marvel wanted to reboot THOR and put him out there, nobody wanted to touch it. Neal Gaiman, he said no, no, no and ran off into the night. Mark Millar and he said no. I said 'I know what to do with this character.' Finally they said okay Joe, here's your toy. What do you want to do? I said I want to put Asgard in Oklahoma. Everyone thought I was completely out of my frickin mind because they said it didn't work but it does."
"The reason why it works is that THOR next to Iron Man, they're both pretty powerful characters and you kind of lose the power of THOR. THOR next to an average person and you see the Godliness in that. The flip side of it is putting him in an urban environment or a mid-western environmental humanises him in strange ways. You see him attending a City Hall meeting or a town hall meeting about in-door plumbing, you can't help but humanise the guy." On seeing the diner he created in the comics in the movie.. "Exactly. You want the contrast of that to humanise him. So to see that story line brought to life and to say that I was right, was like the ultimate nice stroke to say 'yeah, the Asgard in Oklahoma thing worked.' It was a great opportunity to see that story done and to be a part of it and to be on set with Ken, who was very great. I was going to be just a guy standing in line but he decided I could act against all the evidence to the contrary. So that was a lot of fun."
