Kenneth Branagh On The Controversy Surrounding Idris Elba's Casting In Thor

When Idris Elba wast cast as Heimdal in Thor, it caused some controversy in certain camps. Now while speaking to Empire Branagh addresses this. In short? He thinks "it's daft"..

Reaction to Elba's casting as(the decidedly whiter God) Heimdal in Marvel's Thor ranged from some mildly put out fans who wanted the character portrayed onscreen as he is on the page, to outright racism when some fanatical groups went on the rampage over it.

Speaking to Empire, the director of Thor Kenneth Branagh gives his thoughts on this..

"Idris Elba is a fantastic actor - we were lucky to get him. He provides all the characteristics we need from Asgard's gatekeeper, the man who says, "Thou shalt not pass". When Idris Elba says that, you know you're gonna have a problem. He's smart, intelligent, handsome and an absolute joy to work with. If you have a chance to have a great actor in the part, everything else is irrelevant.

"If you're going to say the colour of his skin matters in a story like this, look at 50 years of Thor comics to see how many ways great artists have bent alleged 'rules'. Look at the Norse myths to see the way they confounded and contradicted themselves. That whole 'controversy' was a surprising - and daft - moment."

That's right alll you pussies who complain that a black man is playing a Norse God and an Asian is playiing a Norse God, Quit [female dog]ing, do we all just want the same thing and that is an epic movie. An actor should not be judged by the color of his skin but by the content of the character he is playing.

heimdall & sif are brother & sister,it would still been better if heimdall was white.

He is an amazing actor and he's going to do a great job. Black, white, it doesn't matter. All that matters is that he looks great as Heimdall and THOR WILL OWN!!!!!!

To those who don't have problem with this, you wouldn't have problem with Bruce Willis playing the Black Panther or Blade or, Amy Adams playing Storm? Don't get me wrong I could care less He's relatively minor character and does make an awesome gate keeper. Still I'd like to have seen someone more like the guy I grew up with on the page.

Yeah I do take your point on that, but like you said he ISN'T a major character like Panther or Blade so it is different.

Lets be honest, he looks bad@ss in the trailer when he has his sword outstretched and looks all angry, basically what I'm saying is that he will be great in the role and no one is gonna want to F with him as Heimdall!!

It has nothing to do with being racist. Is wanting to see these characters the way we remember them too much to ask? Apparently so, the second you question as to why a black man was cast as a white character, some idiot will suddenly labeled you a "racist".

Here's a thought for you simple minded piss ants. If it bothers you THAT MUCH that a black man is playing a FICTIONAL character.... then keep you DUMB, CLOSED MINDED, SIMPLE A$$E$ out of the theathers when the movie comes out.... its stupid F#$KS like you that cause majority of the problems in the world today. You probably think santa clause is really sliding down your 12" wide chimneys bring you presents every year too.

When McFarlane made the Spawn movie, he cast Terry (a black character in the comic) as a white guy, which didn't make any difference to the story or character. So, Jimll565, it has been done before. without a ripple.

Now, if you cast Will Smith as Luke Skywalker....now ya got a problem!

@ Marvel72 - They may be brother and sister but its the land of Norse Gods (and Marvel) where anything is possible.

@RorMachine I think a lot of it is crazy nerds like me who just want it the way things are in their minds. Then again I'm crazy :) Either way I'm gona love this movie. Thor just needs to lay out a few "thee"'s and "thou"'s and I'll be a happy man.

THORTheThunderer@ Hogun and the Warriors Three were not Gods. They were Thor's trusted friends..yes...but not Gods according to Norse Mythology and Marvel. ;-)

According to Marvel: "When Thor prepared to set sail into the unknown to learn of what evil power caused a crack in Odin's Oversword of Asgard, the Thunderer sent out a call for Asgard's finest warriors. Among the men assembled, the Warriors Three outshined them all."

If I'm not mistaken (can a greater Thor fan correct me?), the Asgardians are not a copy-and-paste of actual Norse mythology. The Norse simply took elements from the Asgardian society that they glimpsed in their brief interactions with them, which means that there could very well be colored Asgardians.

@DrFate

Jessica Lucas would have made a great Sif. It would have made more sense had she been cast since Heimdall and Sif are supposed to be siblings. That's the only real problem I have, and it's minor. (Clearly race isn't an issue for me since I'm advocating a black person to play Sif.) It seems that the movie is ignoring the whole Heimdall-Sif relationship (it was kind of ignored in the comics as well.) Or they could be claiming that they are adopted siblings. (which works.)
drfate
drfate - 3/28/2011, 9:54 AM
Yeah, Thor and Loki are different "races" too. Why Loki isn't blue and 20 feet tall, I'll never know!
thunderforce
thunderforce - 3/28/2011, 9:56 AM
To me it is obvious if he and sif are brother and sister they have to be the same race either way . In this case if they wanted to make sif a love interest of thor so they make her white than either he should be white also or they should say that they are not related in this movie . To have them as different races and brother and sister and not explain it is just wrong . They could at least give a couple min of back story and say that the gods found hemidal and like loki raised him as their own or something , but to say nothing I think is not right .
