Marvel Honchos Happy with Thor Director - "Branagh gets it!"

Not much news has been coming about about the 2010 Thor movie--until now. Head honchos over at Marvel have met with Kenneth Branagh, the director, and they like what he's doing...

This news comes via a Twitter conversation between Marvel Comics Editor in Chief Joe Quesada and Avengers comics writer Brian Michael Bendis...

Joe Quesada: Okay, three words describe my day today “Branagh gets it!”

Bendis: Hey are we allowed to talk about what we did today or is it hush hush?

Quesada: We can’t go into detail but I think we can say that we met with Branagh about Thor ;-)

Bendis: So we can’t go into detail but maybe we can say that we met with Branagh about Thor ;-)

Quesada: (in response to a fan) I’ll tell you what’s sweet -- Sweet is when he starts quoting continuity and past storylines. The man has immersed himself in Marvel.

Quesada: Yes we can hint at an hour super secret Thor meeting with Branagh, but don’t give it away, just hint.

It's always good news for the movie when a director takes this kind of interest with the comics!

I am excited about this, but at the same time, I think this is one of those movies that is going to be really hard to get right. I don't think that they are going to get the right mix of reality and mythology that you have to have with Thor. We'll just have to keep a close eye on this one to make sure they don't screw it up, cause if they do.......... well, I won't really be able to do anything about it except piss and moan, so thats what I'll do! LOL

MisterNiceGuy - 2/5/2009, 10:30 AM
yea i agree, this is a compicated aspect of marvel to bring into live action. And i will bitch and moan with you if they dont get it right. But until then...GO THOR!

Hell has frozen over - and it's a BEAUTIFUL THING! 'Mr. Shakespeare' starts "...quoting continuity and past storyline..."?! Giggty-giggty-goo! Talk about 'doin' yer homework' - what can I say, when the man's decides to commit to a project, he really F-ING COMMITS (which is more than I can say for OTHER directors - are you reading this Mr. Singer?)!!! This is gonna' be GREAT (fingers crossed). OMFG, I think I'm getting a head-rush. I gotta' go lie down...

well in fairness, they are hardly going to say "we met with Brannagh today, and he hasnt got a [frick]ing clue what hes doing" ..i like Brannagh as the director of Thor but its going to take more than this for me to believe that he "gets it"

thwip - 2/5/2009, 10:42 AM
So since they have Gilderoy Lockhart at the helm of the film, I think Rupert Grint (Ron) is the perfect choice for Thor. Aaaannnnd...whoever it was that played Luna Lovegood as Loki. Right? That cast would give me a petrificus totalus in my undies.

oh, and I'm oh-so-serious here.

loganoneil - 2/5/2009, 10:43 AM
rorschach - At least it's a really great sign! At least Branagh took the time to delve in and submerse himself in the IMMENSE history of the character, unlike SOME directors (Singer) who, by their own admission, never even picked up a comic book and don't even enjoy the genre.

This is awesome news, Branaugh is an excellent actor and director. I'm glad to hear that Marvel trusts his judgement, can't wait

i have come to the conclusion that supermike is not a real person he is just another account made by someone else here who just likes to disagree with the majority and piss people off for shits and giggles.

and i like the idea of Cam Gigandet (the bad guy from never back down) as Captain America. They just need to beef him up a little.
Gideon

I think you're right, Torque.......... especially about the part about him not being a real person!

rorschach - I agree, a plot synopsis or treatment would be nice, but this is a great 'first start'... a director who's does his homework - like Favreau with 'Iron Man' or Nolan with the Batman reboot.

Hey ROR, I agree with you on this Twitter news. its not like they are going to say "my GOD! What have we done! this movie is gonna flame faster than Clay Aiken at a Donna Summer concert! Oh the humanity!!!".... yeah, i don't think they would do that. I do think this was intentionally (of course) put out there to 1)peak the fans interest, and 2) make it seem like there are now worries about how this character will translate into film with this director at the helm.

That being said, i think branagh is the right director for the job... lets just hope and pray... I mean, it could be worse... lets hope they don't give in COMPLETELY to the fanboys. make it a film EVERYBODY can get, not just fans of the mythos. Hopefully, they won't just make this a film that only we could love... Punisher:War Zone, anyone?
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/5/2009, 1:26 PM
which i hated! but im not a fan of punisher comics, i can only hope though, that they have more to them than that movie!
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/5/2009, 1:32 PM
There's an easy way around that - don't give the next 'Punisher' project to a person who played Princess Kitana in the travelling 'Mortal Kombat' show (not that Lexi's gonna' find any directing work in the comic book movie realm any time soon after her 'War Zone' fiasco...)!
ORION
ORION - 2/5/2009, 1:35 PM
I so hope they do this one right.

Well she is slated to direct the Jonah Hex movie, a movie release to which i'm as excited as a dead horse being poked at! Next stop, strawberry shorcake with mara wilson XD
version4
version4 - 2/5/2009, 1:51 PM
thats very true, logan... lexi seems to be a likeable person, but that doesn't mean she's a good director. i think Marvel was looking to throw the curveball, and it didn't work out well. I think they knew it was a risk, though... wasn't exactly getting the "big budget blockbuster potential" treatment before it was made.

Shaman, I'm kinda in and out since I'm at work... whats the petition for?
version4
version4 - 2/5/2009, 1:52 PM
wait... SHE is directing Jonah Hex?... now i'm undrexcited about that epic!
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/5/2009, 2:08 PM
But the thing is, alot of Punisher fans really liked Warzone so maybe it WAS a good adaptation..like i said im glad i dont read his comics if thats the case!

im not exactly exited about Hex but if josh brolin is playing him then ill certainly go see it
NerdRage
NerdRage - 2/5/2009, 2:27 PM
I think they should keep the whole Thor movie in Asgard untill the end where Thor wakes up in the middle of America, leading into the Avengers. That way they can really play around with all the super fantastic stuff and then ground it to fit with the Avengers.
Supermike
Supermike - 2/5/2009, 2:34 PM
But the thing is by the time Avengers come out it be time to recast everyone
MisterNiceGuy
MisterNiceGuy - 2/5/2009, 2:37 PM
thats actually not a bad idea legendary, thats prob the best thing to do if they wanna get a good origin story done first.
loganoneil
loganoneil - 2/5/2009, 3:15 PM
rorschach - I'M a Punisher fan and I thought 'War Zone' sucked, however... it would have made a kick-ass video game (that's about all it was good for) - endless, mind-numbing violence and a 'wipe your @ss on a piece of paper' script.

my god, this is the Marvel movie I have been waiting for

screw superman, bring on The Mighty Thor

A Shakesperian director was the very best choice, and I think Marvel has been pretty open about whether they are happy or not if you look at all the news to come from there in the last couple years
this one should be a good one
i have high hopes

..and anyone who doubts that a 'Shakespearian' actor/director can do action, just watch Branagh in 'Henry V' (which he starred in AND directed). Yeah, I know it's still Shakespeare, but it DOES illustrate he CAN do action (EXTREMELY WELL!!!)
