Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment present the epic adventure, "Thor," which spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is the mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth), a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and is forced to live among humans. A beautiful, young scientist, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), has a profound effect on Thor, as she ultimately becomes his first love. It's while here on Earth that Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Pretty cool. Just from hearing this I can tell the score takes alot of influence from Batman Begins. Particularly in The Prologue. But I don't think it sounds... epic enough. I waould've thought something more like Alan Silvstri's Beowulf score would be fitting. But tbh I wasn't expecting much from Patrick Doyle, I'm looking forward to hearing Alan Silvetri's Captain America score and definatly to James Newton Howard's Green Lantern score.

EDIT: I should add that this is just from hearing small samples of the score, so I'll wait till I hear the whole thing as well as watch the movie.

That was amazing. Each piece compliments its respective scene nicely. I can already detect the sounds of a recurring theme in the score. It's very beautiful.

Grif approved! Now there's an endorsement! Well..."pretty good" is as close to an endorsement as you can get from Grif. :-P

I thought the tracks were excellent! Music is all a matter of taste and I felt it sounded very epic from the samples we could listen to.

Nothing special at all about it IMO. There was no theme I could really identify and it just seemed like average action music to me. I expected something more like Gladiator.

I miss epic scores like Elfman's Batman or Spider-Man. Captain America better have a grandiose hero theme and patriotic score!

@CapFan79
I agree. It seemed to be a tad generic. There wasn't a recognisable theme in there either. Or not much of one either. I would expect Cap to have a heroic theme since it's being done by Silvestri.

CapFan79 - 4/9/2011, 12:29 PM
Well, usually a score has a specific theme. There's no "Thor" track title and although they're only 30 seconds, with about 20 of them you'd think you could identify something uniform. When The Incredible Hulk score snippets were released before the film I could clearly identify what music meant Banner got pissed off. Doesn't mean the movie suffers in any way as I'm sure the music compliments the action, I just like film scores that are thematic. Kind of like Star Wars. Good guy theme, bad guy theme, love interest theme, etc.

I'm a little worried with Cap since Silvestri's score for GI Joe sucked and you'd expect a somewhat similar score for both. Didn't get a "real American hero" vibe.

@CapFan79
To be fair, I'm pretty sure Silvestri has alot more character drama to work with in Cap than he did in GI Joe.

In all honesty James Newton Howard's score for GL is the one I'm looking forward to the most. That guy has got some serious range in his music and I can't to see what he does with GL's epic scope.

CapFan79 - 4/9/2011, 12:41 PM
Silvestri hasn't done much since Mummy Returns. We'll see.

As far as Thor is concerned you'd expect a more "thunderous" and Wagnerian score. I know this is not a Norse film, but I listened to those tracks and they don't give me an epic feel. Hopefully what's on screen makes the music seem epic, versus some action films that rely on the music to beef up the action.

@CapFan79
Yeah hopefully Silvestri can channel his Predator and Judge Dredd days for Cap.

As for Thor, Like I said I thought it'd be more like Beowulf. But it's hard to tell from only 30 seconds. P.s I was kind of hoping that "The Sons of Odin" was actually the song by ManOwar. :P

Really? Because I don't think any of it is as big or recognisable.

@Dynamo and CapFan

You mean to tell me that you don't shake in your chair from just imagining shots of Asgard while Sons of Odin is playing? Wow....

And the theme was very obvious in Sons of Odin and Ride to Observatory. Seriously... did you even listen to it? Generic action movie? Umm.... I've never head of a generic action movie that sounded that good.

Maybe it's because I've read the script and I know how each scene plays out, but this sounds incredible. It's epic stuff. Nothing generic about it at all.

CapFan79
CapFan79 - 4/9/2011, 4:04 PM
Nope nothing great. I used to work in films and I have a huge collection of soundtracks I use to edit and there's nothing I heard here that stands alone. I'm sure while the movies going it'll sound fine. Williams and Elfman and Giacchino do a great job at creating grand themes for each character. I was hoping Thor would have something bombastic and Loki a real sinister score. "The Destroyer" is the only track I felt was as expected.

It doesn't compare to Superman or Batman! Superman is epic. There's a Krypton theme, Kent theme, Superman theme, Lex theme and love theme. This is just meh as an album, but again on screen it likely fits the film nicely. I'm sure there's a ton of sound FX too so if the sound design is good perhaps the music plus sound = EPIC.

Amazing soundtrack. Compliments each "scene". But, I need to see and hear it with the movie to see if it will truly be epic. I have a good feeling it will.

Excellent Score, listened to all of the snippets and found that they all convey a grand sound suitable for Gods and their battles - Roll on the Movie!
