Everyone knew that Thor would be Marvel Studios' toughest sell because of the fantasy aspects that may put off the average movie goer. While that may be the case I do think that this movie will please fans of the comic. Chris Hemsworth is perfect as Thor and he completely owns the role. He is funny, dramatic and arrogant (in a good way) when the story calls for it. I can't see anyone else playing this role and it will be fun to see him play Thor again in The Avengers.

Natalie Portman stars as Jane Foster who is Thor's love interest. She is cute and a little quirky and she does a fine job. Anthony Hopkins plays Thor's dad, Odin, who is also king of Asgard. He is cast perfectly as he says each line with a thunderous roar. Tom Hiddleston plays Loki who is Thor's brother and also the movies main villain. Hiddlestion does fine with what he is given but I found the character a weak villain as he was not very menacing and looked ridiculous with his horn topped crown. Kat Dennings plays Natalie Portman's co-worker and is in the movie strictly for comic relief which actually worked very well. Clark Gregg reprises his role from the Iron Man movies as agent Coulson of S.H.I.E.L.D. This is for the sole purpose to weave all of the story lines together for the upcoming Avengers movie. Jeremy Renner also makes a pretty cool cameo as Hawkeye which he will also reprise in The Avengers. Overall the cast is very good and brings some real emotion to their characters.

The film's main problem is the fantasy aspects. They will most likely be off putting to mainstream audiences and at times it was a little off putting to me too. From the silly costumes to the even sillier Frost Giants which are the race of creatures that are the enemies of the Asgardians. They are basically giant blue creatures that freeze people. While these parts are silly, all of the scenes that take place on Asgard look great and the production design is top notch. I also think that the 3D does nothing to add to the experience and you are better off seeing the movie in 2D.

Another problem I had with the movie were some of the weak action scenes. The beginning battle scene that takes place on the home planet of the Frost Giants is one of these scenes. While it had an epic feel it was hard to see what was going on and the editing was a little too choppy. The climax of the movie was a little too anti-climactic and they could have raised the stakes a little more. But it took place on a rainbow bridge in outer space so at least it looked cool. Though the scenes with the destroyer on Earth were pretty good.

While Thor is no Iron Man, it is still a fun fantasy action filled superhero movie and it will please fans of the comic. It's just that the fantasy aspects and Kenneth Branagh's inexperience with action is what ultimately hurts the movie. Chris Hemsworth is a revelation and should definitely become a star after this movie. Thor is lighthearted fun and is another step closer to the superhero team up movie, The Avengers, which has comic book fans drooling in excitement (including me).

I cannot understand your references to alien creatures as silly, especially since a crazy man in a suit shaped like a bat (Batman) is deemed "normal" or say Spiderman - a man with spider like abilities due to being bit by a radioactive spider or Hulk a man bombarded by gamma rays turning into an incarnation of sheer rage and anger. Or a man in a metal suit falling from orbital heights and LIVING is normal.

If you have a race of beings called Frost Giants...do you expect them to be red and eh drink hot tea? Or do you think, cold, icey, freezing? Hmmm I wonder...Note the blatant sarcasm.

Your on a comic book movie site...and your talking about fantasy elements being off putting...what comics do you read? The Dandy? the Beano?

Also Sir Anthony Hopkins is not hamming it up with "thunderous roars". Some lines he utters with so much feeling and emotion it is unbelieveable and shows Odin's own pain in the way he has to discipline his son. He's angry, upset and dissapointed with Thor, even tho Odin was prob like Thor at Thor's age. However, with the responsibilities as King of Asgard, Odin has to act in a certain manner and he realises Thor cannot be King until serious lessons are learned. His scene at the end with Loki and Thor hanging on the edge of the Bifrost are just epic because he is in them.

Also Tom Hiddleston doing the best he can? He was [frick]ing ace. Absolutely brilliant. You could sense the machinations of Loki's plans without it being obvious. he literally perfected the character. Horned helmets? I suppose all those Iron Age helmets, yes, on our planet are totally ridiculous...you know the ones worn ceremoniously...often like how crowns are wore by monarchs today...oh wait...Loki is a prince of Asgard...wearing a ceremonial, authority giving, helmet...in an ALIEN world...

This by no shadow of a doubt is the worst review I have ever read of this film. you have everything wrong..you have done some fantastic actors a disservice.

Also Ken Brannagh, not good with action scenes...? Thor was an origin movie...if the action didn't advance the story it ould have ben needless, hence there isn't much. It is literally only used to advance the story when in Jotunheim - which creates the situation of defacto war between to kingdoms, which results in Thors banishment. While on Earth when Thor has his powers back , he kills the Destroyer, quite easily because it would be slowing the film down and would'nt add much plus it also shows the power Thor weilds in Mjolnir.

Fantasy genre films have been in vogue since the Lord of the Rings. Is Iron man, the film you referenced...a present day depiction of earth or is it fantasy? again a man in a metal suit powered by a fake heart, who can fall from orbital heights and survive..hmm again i wonder.

I hope this sounds as harsh as it was intended, I am not even a fanboy, I just think out of all the previous reviews, your the one guy who should've read them, for they all pretty much get it right, and you have gotten it totally and utterly wrong.

Thor is an awesome movie. Hiddleston and Hemsworth did better jobs that the Oscar winning actors in the film.

@ZiDean

No need to get butt hurt. This is simply my opinion of a movie. No one asked you to comment on here. Also why don't you go back and read that part about Anthony Hopkins. In no way did i say he was hamming it up. In fact I said he was cast "perfectly".

I'd also like to add that Batman, The Hulk, Spider-Man and Iron Man are all more believable than the lame Frost Giants.

Thor was pure perfection. Like watching a comic come to life on screen. Gee, there's a thought. Have to admit that I enjoyed Loki's performance most. Loved the brief Clint Barton/Hawkeye cameo. Knew it was him from the moment he grabbed the bow. Hope he uses his Ultimate costume. Lookin forward to The Avengers. I am though a little concerned about having so many "heroes" on screen. Better be epic.

I wonder if the comments that have been deleted, should have been...there were two saying precisely what I said. I'm guessing they were deleted because they agreed with me and the reviewer mistakenly thought they agreed with him. He even said "thanks - means alot" then he has realised he is so "mentally deficient" he hasn't read the comment right and has thanked someone for agreeing with me.

Also Im pretty sure phrases like "don't get butt hurt" and "you must think of Thor and touch yourself" say more about those who use them than they do about who their directed at. grow up or evenprobably more accurate, COME-OUT. I mean, trying to get a rise out of someone, trying to insult someone, over the net,is basically admitting you are a coward, that your so base you have no respect for yourself.

The review was unstructured tosh with absolutely no value. That's a scientific fact. I believe the reviewer is a Future Darwin Award winner - at least I hope so.
