It felt like a very long time since we saw the very first photo of Thor. Times have passed since then, and it passed quite quickly. Now we are here at this point in which Thor has been finally unleashed in North America and we await what Fox, Warner has to offer.
Thor being the first movie to officially kick off the summer(Sorry Fast Five) blockbuster season. Drank, brawled and it will make Marvel and it's followers proud. Credit goes to the fabulous portrayal of Chris Hemsworth as the lead character. Thor a character who is very over the top and was thought to be one that is going to be hard to adapt on film is brought to life Branagh and Hemsworth. They proved that the character is worth caring for and is actually interesting. Hemsworth as the titular character is charismatic, handsome, arrogant, naive, and strong at the same time. He is not your quintessential nerd with was bestowed upon with a superpower because it is his/her destiny. Thor was initially great, fell from grace and got back up. It is simply a refreshing take on the comic book movie genre.
The lead is only as good as his supporting cast and this is where the rest of the actors actually picked up their own slack. From the stern Odin, to the mischievous Loki. All of the characters who supplemented Chris in his portrayal beautifully captured the essence of every single character(take notes 20th century Fox). Was just disappointed that they didn't flesh out Sif enough; I could live with the warriors 3 as supporting characters hence they don't need an in depth back story. Unfortunately Sif was treated that way. She would've been a very effective alternative to Jane Foster who I though hugged too much of a screen time.
Now Portman as Foster is not a miscast, it's just that her portrayal looked tired, very generic. That fault cannot be attributed all to Natalie as the script really made her look and sound like a helpless, deadbeat scientist.
With that blemish on the side, we are presented with a magnificent looking environment in the vein of Asgard. Although the Earth scenes looked lackluster it really gave us a great contrast between two worlds. That little New Mexico town served it's purpose perfectly. From the golden walls of Asgard to the dusty roads of New Mexico(I can't remember the name of that town); Thor looked and felt right.
As we stray away from the visuals, the music actually fit the movie well. Patrick Doyle hit the nail in the coffin with his score. The songs are fun to listen to by themselves. It wasn't over the top, it was just paired right. Like how Williams paired his score with Superman. The score is nowhere near that nor it will be synonymous with the film; it did the job and the film benefited from it.
In conclusion Thor is a magnificent addition to the serialized line up leading up to the Avengers. The movie gave the God of Thunder an identity to stand on his own two feet. At the same time it introduced him to a totally new crop of fans. With that said now go and see it and enjoy the spectacle. I give this movie a Fabulous rating!
Now here's the honey:
