Thor Is #1 Again At The US Box Office; Priest Bombs!

The God of Thunder's first big screen outing is still #1 in its second week at the North American box office, beating out competitors Bridesmaids and Fast Five. Meanwhile, thriller Priest bombs miserably. More after the jump!

The box office results for this weekend are in! Thor, the epic Marvel film released last week to positive reviews and hit $66 million in its first weekend, is #1 for a second week in a row. It's set to make $32 million in its second week, followed by Bridesmaids at $22 million and Fast Five at $18 million. Also, the action horror/thriller Priest, an adaptation of a graphic novel, failed miserably with $5.6 million. From Hit Fix:

Thor still ruled the top five with another $9.1 million and $93.8 in just eight days. The first Marvel Studios release of the summer looks like it will end up with $160-170 million domestically when all is said and done. That's far less than the $300 million mark achieved by the both Iron Man features, but far better than 2008's Incredible Hulk which grossed $134 million.

The other significant news Friday was the disappointing opening of Screen Gems' expensive "tentpole" Priest The 3D horror action flick found only $5.6 million even with higher ticket prices. If Priest plays like a traditional horror film its looking at anywhere from $13-15 million. Screen Gems will no doubt be hoping it doesn't, but a three-day cume of $17 million or more would be shocking.

Sadly, this will probably mark Thor's last weekend at the top spot, since Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will inevitably take the top spot easily. Anyways, Thor and Priest are both out now at your local theater!

Priest looks terrible just from previews. Maybe the viewing public is tired of vampire movies?

Thor seems to be doing a little better overseas. It should hopefully top $450 million worldwide, which is respectable and probably sequel-worthy.

I think its sequal worthy already. Seems to be doing good for a first timer. With Iron man i think Marvel Studios struck Gold though

actually thor did 34.5 mill this weekend.and with overseas gross after this weekend it should be at 350 mill $

to be honest, Thor won by default. It did drop a whole lot percentage wise too. It was a solid movie and deserved better no doubt but this summer schedule is just overkill in terms of blockbusters lined up

@Indestruktible- Agreed, the movies coming out this summer won't have enough time to shine as a huge blockbuster is to come out literally every week after the next

i hope we get another thor film, the first was very good.

if it reaches $400 million we should.

Thor is doing great business. Iron Man was kind of a fluke. Usually the first film of summer doesn't do $300 mil. I assumed that it'd do about $200 mil domestic. Thor will still have a few more weeks in the top 5 and will be in the top 10 until Harry Potter is out. $400 million worldwide should be easy.

If I were Marvel I'd start advertising Cap more and let people know to see Thor first.

I think X-Men could be a surprise hit. I saw Thor twice and each time the X-Men trailer got oohs and aahs. They showed the old Green Lantern trailer instead of the new one in one screening to a bunch of meh's and it wasn't attached with the second showing I saw.

I think Green Lantern could struggle even if it's good. I think Transformers, Harry Potter and Pirates are the films to beat. Captain America could benefit the. Ost since those movies will have been released.

@CapFan
Agreed about Potter, Pirates, and Tranformers being the ones to beat, but I'm pretty sure GL will not struggle. Sci Fi is a huge market, and GL has that in abundance. Of course a film has to be good to be successful, and GL is looking great, especially since the Wondercon footage, and new trailer.
I know it's impossible to convince a Marvel fan of that though. ;)

marvel72 - 5/15/2011, 9:53 AM
@ capfan79

i agree,"from the studio that brought you iron man,the incredible hulk & thor bring you the next chapter".

that'll do then the brand new trailer.
CapFan79
CapFan79 - 5/15/2011, 9:59 AM
OMG here we go sucking the GL dick again. It's not true sci-fi like Star Trek or Super 8 which is coming out. True sci-fi actually doesn't do huge business like comics movies (Star Wars excluded). Just because there's a few space scenes doesn't make it 2001! It's a comic book movie, like Thor and X-men which come before it.

GL will be lucky to do $400 mil internationally like Thor. I can't wait to be proven right about GL's box office because there is no hype for it no matter how many of you DC nerds are dying to see it.

@fsucsu I really want to see Transformers 3. Yes, 2 sucked but I really loved the 1st movie and this one looks like it's gonna be epic. Every dude I know and guys at work have this as their #1 summer movie. It's the kind of movie you buy an HDTV and home theater for!
marvel72
marvel72 - 5/15/2011, 10:00 AM
i think potter & transformers 3 will be the ones to beat.
CBMfan001
CBMfan001 - 5/15/2011, 10:04 AM
have to congratulate marvel for THOR,they only had one misfire in "the incredible hulk" but otherwise all they have touched have turned to gold.THOR looks on course to earn $200 mil domestically and $400 mil overseas easily making it a success.THOR was indeed a decent entertaining movie though won't be a memorable one.

I sincerely hope that cowboys and aliens and GL too will become hits,I'm really excited for both, though in this site cowboys and aliens is frequently overlooked in their polls as a CBM.

DC is yet to get the magic touch of MARVEL (can't credit batman awesomeness to DC because it's Nolan's baby and all other DC properties have failed to live up to expectations eg - superman returns)I hope GL will change that because it does actually look good with action and ALL other cool stuff.

all in all congrats MARVEL for another decent effort and DC now it's your turn is all I can say :)

if GL is good word of mouth might help it to make money but not major money.

if not u need to see it cause its good.

Not sure where they got $5.6 million for Priest, it made $5.5 million on Friday alone. Its weekend gross was $15.5 million which beat the studio's expectations of $10-$12m. Also, Thor pulled in $34.5m not $32m like kurekurcubic already pointed out.
CapFan79
CapFan79 - 5/15/2011, 10:10 AM
Cowboys & Aliens is a tough one to figure out. It could be a hit or just perform average. With Harrison Ford in this type of role I think it can bring in a older audience than other comics films. They need to start advertising it's "stats" more.

I didn't expect it to do as good as Iron Man. But it would've been awesome if it did. Thor is a harder character to sell, IMO.

But I thought the movie was great.

What is shocking about Thor is that the movie doesn't come out in Japan until july 1st. I actually think it's not unfair to think that Thor will earn at least $400M worldwide!

@marvel72

yeah its really good. its very funny and bloody. everyone in the cinema enjoy the movie. it has the cult classic sci fi horror style in the movie i.e. "the Critters", "ALiens" and etc. also them Alien monster is something fresh and new its not them Hollywood style of Alien this Alien is pure black with glowing teeth. it works so well in the movie cause the setting is at night. also them hoodie kids u start of hating them at first then u start to warm up to them later on in the movie.

the movie will be a cult classic it wont make blockbuster money but its a solid movie.

I figured that Priest would be this years Jonah Hex.

Why would people go see Priest while [frick]ing THOR is in theaters?

The funniest thing about this is that Screen Gems moved the release date from October then to January and finally to May so it would make more money of the summertime audience HAHA....Stupid... Had they released it in January or October going up against NOTHING at the box office it would have probably been moderately successful.

Instead the brilliant workers at Screen Gems decided that the best thing to do was to release a movie about a relatively unknown comic book character against THOR and Pirates of the Caribbean!

They set themselves up for failure worse than Warner/DC. Way to go Screen Gems. You're brilliant.

not everyone like Marvel movies maybe that give them a reason to watch Priest or they just want to see something different
