Even THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER's Writer Didn't Know About [SPOILER]'s Mid-Credits Scene Cameo

Thor: Love and Thunder writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has addressed the movie's mid-credits scene, confirming that the character's MCU debut was a surprise to her when she sat down to watch the sequel...

Thor: Love and Thunder's scant 2-hour runtime meant it had to cram a lot of story in, and writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson was tasked with helping Taika Waititi realise his vision. Given the filmmaker's habit of going off script, we have to imagine that was easier said than done, though it does sound like several major scenes and subplots were left on the cutting room floor.

This could go some way towards explaining the mixed response to the Thor: Ragnarok sequel, but there was still plenty to love about the blockbuster. Among those moments was the MCU debut of Hercules, with Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein playing the Olympian.

Talking to Variety, Robinson confirmed that the stinger was a surprise to her and not a moment she wrote into the movie. "I saw that at the premiere with everybody else," the writer admits. "In the same way that I guess Taika didn’t know Thor was coming back, I did not know that Roy Kent was Hercules."

"I knew there was talk about Hercules. The name Hercules was not not said in conversations that I definitely, probably wasn’t supposed to overhear, but did," she continues. "So the minute I saw the beginning of the scene, I knew he was gonna be talking to Hercules. I didn’t know who they cast. But I was like, is this gonna be Hercules? I just knew that it was a thing that they were like, 'We’re gonna want leeway with this, so stay away from it.'"

During the same interview, Robinson revealed that Thor: Love and Thunder opened with Jane Foster's cancer diagnosis instead of Gorr the God Butcher's origin. She didn't share any other deleted scenes, and confirmed there are currently no plans she's aware of for her to return to the MCU.

As for Hercules, it does sound like Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has big plans for the character. Whether he'll return in the next Thor movie or elsewhere remains to be seen, but it appears the warrior is on his way to Earth. One popular theory is that the misguided God will end up joining the Thunderbolts.

Thor: Love and Thunder is now playing in theaters.

@IcePyke - guess it's nothing new that Marvel keeps everyone partially in the dark if they don't want them to know all the details

After having seen it I don’t get the massive hate the movie has garnered. Some flaws for sure but still far away from being bad.

Have CBM fans become too cynical? Idk the movie was a perfect ‚brain-off and have fun‘ affair

@Blergh - Typical "we have too many nice things, so lets complain" syndrome.

@Blergh - if they're resorting to mindless popcorn flicks instead of well thought out planning, well written movies like the previous phases, that's a problem. And giving them a billion dollars tells them it's okay to keep cutting corners with the script and cgi.

@Blergh -
No, the movie just sucks and a large majority of its audience are rejecting it as demonstrated by the poor word of mouth, the massive box office drop and the director desperately trying to explain why you as a fan are the problem.

I'll be glad when SDCC starts so all the people desperately shilling Thor L&T will move onto the next product to consume and we can all just forget Thor L&T existed.

@Blergh - I think people just enjoy complaining and the Internet has made it increasingly easy to hide behind an anonymous screenname and say whatever you want, even if you don't mean it.

We also live in an age where people think it's cool to hate on something.

As you said, it's certainly a movie that has a few flaws, but it also has a lot of great in it and certainly doesn't deserve the hate it's getting.

I think the audience score hovering around 80% for the movie is mostly accurate. 4 out of 5 people actually liking the film.

@Scarilian - the movie wasn’t perfect by any means , it’s a typical blockbuster without much meaning or meat but it doesn’t suffer from internal logic leaps, bad performances or particularly bad writing.
It’s rushing the plot, which is where my biggest issue comes from and suffers from the short runtime.
Other than that it doesn’t really commit any sins that make a truly bad movie for me.

I won’t be mindlessly shilling it, it’s far from my favorite MCU film and more belongs to the mid tier stuff like the early Phase 1 lineup but I just don’t understand the massive hate it’s getting.

@LastActionZero - but Marvel has always made better and worse films. It’s not like every single one of their films was a straight up banger.
Thor 1, Iron Man 2, Incredible Hulk, Thor 2, GotG2, Black Panther, Ant Man & the Wasp, Captain Marvel were all pre Phase 4 movies of the same cloth as Thor 4 („not bad, not terrible, just alright“). That’s obviously all subjective to my opinion.

They’re getting sloppier, I agree. But their output is far from as terrible as other big franchise movies lately (Fantastic Beasts, Fast & Furious, Jurassic Park, DCEU or Resident Evil)

@Blergh - This site is very flawed and likes to nitpick on stupid things. However this movie wasn't the right step in the way after Ragnarok. In fact it just made me appreciate the former movie a little more and it didn't used to be a favourite of mine.

So the best scene involving Zeus came from Marvel and not the writers of the film.

No wonder Zeus talked like an actual character and not a dumb cartoon in that scene

Taika should be more open with his writers team and not keep them out from anything.
