THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Has Second-Highest Thursday Opening Of Any 2022 Movie With $29 Million

Thor: Love and Thunder isn't exactly a critical darling, but it did just nab the second-highest Thursday opening of 2022, placing behind only Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Check it out...

Deadline reports that Thor: Love and Thunder earned an impressive $29 million from Thursday evening screenings, giving the blockbuster the second-best debut of any 2022 movie. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness remains at #1 with $36 million, though the Thor: Ragnarok sequel has been tracking behind that movie for a while now.

Still, this is a great result, especially as these preview numbers put it behind only Avengers: Endgame ($60 million), Spider-Man: No Way Home ($50 million), Avengers: Infinity War ($39 million), and the aforementioned Doctor Strange sequel.

Analysts are unsure what sort of opening weekend the God of Thunder's latest solo adventure will have, though projections from the start of the week pointed to $140 million - $160 million. What's changed since then are the reviews, as Thor: Love and Thunder isn't the critical darling Thor: Ragnarok was in 2017.

In fact, it has only 68% as we write this, a far cry from its predecessor's 93%. It's also worth noting that the movie is currently a couple of percentage points behind Thor: Ragnarok in terms of the "Audience Score," so it's possible word of mouth won't be as good on this one.

"Too silly to take seriously, there’s still a lot to love about Thor: Love and Thunder, but unlike Thor: Ragnarok, it’s unlikely to be a movie you’ll fall in love with," we said in our review earlier this week. "Marvel Studios may be developing a quantity over quality issue."

It's going to be an interesting weekend, that's for sure, and we can't help but think there will be no middle ground here; Thor: Love and Thunder will either underperform or exceed expectations. If we had to hazard a guess, it will be the latter, but you simply never know with these types of things until fans start buying their tickets...or not!

I quite enjoyed this.

Most of the humor landed (despite a few overly dragged jokes), it had a very emotional and strong final act, a distinct aesthetic and visuals and Thor's power level display was on point here, just like in Ragnarok.

Jane was also awesome in this one and Christian Bale was a memorable villain, delivering an amazing performance as usual.

7.5/10

And love it or not, this film's visuals were the best of all entries in Phase 4 so far.

@kylo0607 - same for me, taika went a bit overboard with the jokes but it was a good movie. people are never gonna be happy and will try to shit on anything.

@theprophet - Haters gonna hate.

But it doesn't really matter, since we are getting a 5th Thor film anyway or at least a future appearance by him.

@kylo0607 - the whole Shadow Realm sequence alone is worth the ticket, it was almost Sin City-esque.

@Spidey91 - I agree.

The Shadow Realm sequence was insane and visually stunning:

@kylo0607 - special mention to the scene that comes after that when Gorr enters a certain door. it's not a spoiler article so I won't say it here, I'll just say it was extremely serene and almost esoteric, and it reminded me a lot of Tanjiro's spiritual core from Demon Slayer

it was pretty good. i think maybe they let Taika Waititi a little more loose this time around. unlike ragnarok where it was the perfect balance between his humor and Marvel. i love his humor but sometimes you can have to much of a good thing.

I'm kind of glad Marvel is going back to the formula that made Spider-Man movies work. The villain and the hero need to battle multiple times throughout the film. A lot of superhero movies save the conflict for the final battle. We got to see Thor battle Gorr 3 different times which was refreshing considering prior MCU films seem to only have the hero fight their main villain once. Doctor Strange did this as well having him battle Wanda 3 different times.

@SonOfAGif - The action scenes are good and the shadow realm was great,Reminded me of Sin City.

Eternity was great, Hercules wasn't bad, Gorr needed more screen time.

Its just everything else which was pretty bad.
