Taika Waititi is not a man who likes to sit still for very long. Following his Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar win for
Jojo Rabbit, the director will soon get to work on Marvel's
Thor: Love and Thunder, and he has at least another two projects in various stages of development for different studios.
Now, we can add two
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory animated series to the mix.
According to
THR, Waititi has signed on to direct, write and exec produce a pair of animated shows based on Roald Dahl's classic tale for Netflix. The first seems to be a straight adaptation of the book, while the other is described as "a wholly original take on the Oompa-Loompas."
“
In the words of Willy Wonka himself – we are ‘Delighted! Charmed! Overjoyed!’ with Taika’s appointment on this project,” said Gideon Simeloff, commercial and entertainment director, Roald Dahl Story Company.
“There is something undeniably Wonka-esque about Taika’s creative flair and inimitable sense of humor and we cannot think of anyone more perfectly suited to leading the creative charge on these first of their kind, feature quality Netflix shows.”
The trade's report also confirms that Waititi is currently in talks with Lucasfilm about an unnamed
Star Wars project, and may return to work on season 2 of
The Mandalorian.
