Marvel recently announced the Thor: Ragnarok cast, but in a movie which is going to take us on a cosmic road trip with the God of Thunder and Jade Giant, you can bet your ass that at least one or two more major characters from the comic books will be added over the coming weeks and months.

With the action no longer taking place on Midgard though, chances are that they won't be any of Thor's human supporting cast. Instead, we're getting a loose adaptation of Planet Hulk, and there are almost countless possibilities for some really great heroes and villains to make their presence felt alongside Hela, The Executioner, and The Grandmaster, even if they only end up having cameos.

So, with all of that in mind, what you'll find here is a look at five cosmic characters who need to make their respective presences felt in this movie. There isn't room for all of them, but at least one or two of this lot showing up in some capacity is very likely indeed, so keep reading for the top candidates.

5. Beta Ray Bill

loading

If Thor: Ragnarok is going to take us on a cosmic road trip, then Beta Ray Bill needs to make some sort of appearance. Him fighting in The Grandmaster's gladiatorial arena seems like a given - especially as Bill played a key role in the animated version of Planet Hulk - while the story of him being awarded his own hammer (the Stormbreaker) after being proved worthy of carrying Mjolnir could very easily be squeezed in here, setting the stage for him to return in Avengers: Infinity War

Of course, you might be wondering why a character like Beta Ray Bill wasn't mentioned in the press release. Well, there was already more than enough there to get excited about in fairness, and chances are the character would end up being 100% CGI with a voice actor chosen at a later date. My pick? What We Do In The Shadows co-director and star Jemaine Clement! Regardless of who plays him though, this quirky character's big screen debut is long overdue, and Marvel will have missed a great opportunity if they fail to have him appear in Thor: Ragnarok

4. Korg

loading

In Korg's case, an appearance in Thor: Ragnarok would actually be a reintroduction! Portrayed as little more than a mindless monster and Easter Egg in Thor: The Dark World, he could easily be brought back as an actual character in this movie with his story playing out similarly to his comic book counterpart in the sense that he became a prisoner of the Red King The Grandmaster on the alien planet of Sakaar after being defeated by the God of Thunder.

It's hard to say whether or not this movie could devote enough time to the character so we get to see him become one of the Hulk's closest allies, but it certainly wouldn't hurt for that to at least be touched on. Worst case scenario is that he makes another blink and you'll miss it appearance as one of Thor's opponents in the arena, though the battle this time would obviously be much more difficult if the hero has Mjolnir taken from him. The potential to do something interesting and fun with Korg is definitely there anyway, and time will tell whether or not Marvel Studios takes advantage of that.

3. Champion Of The Universe

loading

My gut tells me that if Champion of the Universe was in this movie, we'd have got some casting news already. However, it's not uncommon for actors to be added to a movie after shooting begins, so I wouldn't necessarily rule out an appearance from this guy just yet. Like The Collector and The Grandmaster, he's one of the Elders of the Universe, and despite being a relatively obscure character in the grand scheme of things, he has a very interesting history with the likes of She-Hulk and Thanos.

Born over 5 billion years ago, Tryco Slatterus' fighting supremacy has earned him the title of Champion, so surely it would make sense for him to show up in The Grandmaster's arena to take on Thor and The Hulk? While I don't envision him having a massive role in Thor: Ragnarok (I honestly wouldn't be too surprised if he just shows up as a glorified extra in the background), this movie feels like the right place to introduce him, and there being a champion who either Thor or The Hulk needs to defeat does make sense when you think about it.

2. Balder The Brave

loading

Ok, Balder isn't a cosmic character in the traditional sense, but Asgard is out in the cosmos! Fans have been wondering why this Asgardian has been excluded from the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the release of Thor in 2011, but this movie could be where we finally get to meet the God of Thunder's half-brother. One of Asgard's bravest warriors, he's been a close ally to Thor over the years, and with characters like The Warriors Three and Sif seemingly taking a back seat in Thor: Ragnarok, chances are there will finally be room for him here.

Why does he matter though? Well, it's prophesied in Asgardian mythology that Balder's death is what brings on Ragnarok, and in the comic books, he was murdered by Loki at the behest of Hela in order to bring about the end of everything. Something similar happening in Asgard during Thor's absence makes perfect sense then, though it would obviously be better if Balder was a character we had already spent some time with. Still, don't be too shocked to see him appear in some way.

1. Adam Warlock

loading

Despite that Easter Egg in Guardians of the Galaxy, chances are we won't meet Adam Warlock in Vol. 2 next year. However, considering the fact that Thor: Ragnarok will reportedly go a long way in setting up the events of Avengers: Infinity War, I wouldn't be remotely surprised to see him make a very brief cameo appearance in this Phase 3 release instead. A synthetic being created by human scientists called "The Enclave" to become their ideal template for a new race of humans who would one day rule the Earth, "Him" rebelled and became Adam Warlock, but as interesting as that backstory is, tackling it in this movie seems unlikely.

That's why a cameo seems like a much better option, and if you cast your mind back to rumours that Thor: Ragnarok might end with the God of Thunder in some sort of intergalactic prison, him meeting Adam there would be a great way to bring this fan-favourite character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The chances of this do seem rather slim, but you can't deny that it would be a mind-blowing moment!

Which of these characters would you most like to see in Thor: Ragnarok? Have we missed any other suitable candidates? As always, share your thoughts in the comments section below.

I'm really hoping for Adam Warlock and Beta Ray Bill here. Two missed opportunities if excluded.

@MovieCriticMike - Also, first!

@MovieCriticMike - Agreed. I feel like a lock would be another Elder or Elders aside from Grandmaster showing up in MCU at some point. If they end the Thor movies without introducing Beta Ray Bill that would be a massive miss for them. Bill could become the next Thor type for post Phase 3. I'm pretty sure Thor won't be surviving. Also Warlock seems like the second most likely. I mean Feige is smart enough to know how crucial he is to Thanos. It would be idiotic not to include him.

@MovieCriticMike - Definitely Beta Ray Bill. Adam Warlock can wait for a Guardians movie for me. I would also love to finally see Balder in a Thor movie...

It looks likely that Vision will take an Adam Warlock-like role in the MCU, and Elizabeth Debicki is rumored to play Kismet/Her in GotG 2, so yeah. Adam's chances of appearing are lessening.

@SnapperCarr - That would be a damn shame though. Even if he appears in Part 2 as basically the saving grace, i'd be stoked.

@SnapperCarr - Wouldn't Kismet in GotG2 increase the chance of seeing Adam Warlock rather than lower it?

@MovieCriticMike - Adam Warlock will be female in MCU

@ShagMeRotten - Korg was already in Thor 2. So they could take him or leave him. Adam Warlock and Balder would take too much of an explanation. Like why have we never heard of Balder, through all the talk of brotherhood and who would take the throne. You would think Fria would have at least mentioned him when comforting Loki. Or that Loki wouldn't feel as bad knowing that there was a third brother who was also not really related 100%.

And despite what that writer said, I think Adam Warlock is like 80% likely to show up in GOTG Vol 2. So, again not likely to appear here. There's just not enough time.

So we've got Champion and Beta Ray Bill. One of the biggest parts of creating Beta Ray Bill was making a monster that tricked audiences by looking evil, but turning out to be super good. A creature that was so good, he could lift Thor's hammer. Now, in the MCU, Thor's hammer has already been lifted. So that feat is not as impressive anymore, and will be outright trivialized if another character does it so soon. Also, the novelty of having a monster that's good is sort of nullified by Hulk's presence. That's what he is.

Much of Beta Ray Bill was already done with Vision. If he appears, I think it should be a brief cameo. Maybe the list of warriors appears on screen and it reads "B'e tAr AYbill" And Hulk, being sort of dumb reads "Beta Ray Bill".

@Luigi - Nah because they might see him as redundant

Adam Warlock should be in Guardians. But yes Beta Ray Bill should enter the film, not a huge portion but give him an introduction so you don't have to worry about it when they take on Surtur.

What, no Amora the Enchantress? Considering the Executioners presence, I'd think her appearance might be possible.

I wonder, how will Thor get his hammer back if Hela destroys it?

Beta Ray Bill would be great, though little of the thrill of having someone else lift the hammer went away when Vision did it.

Of course, Vision is just a really smart elevator, if you believe Steve Rogers.
