How THOR: RAGNAROK Director Taika Waititi (Sort Of) Hid A Reference To GREEN LANTERN In The Movie

You've probably forgotten that Taika Waititi had a role in Green Lantern but the filmmaker has now revealed that he managed to sneak in a DC Comics reference of sorts to Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok...

Way back in 2011, Taika Waititi showed up as Hal Jordan's best friends in critical and commercial flop Green Lantern. Fast forward six years and he's now at the helm of Thor: Ragnarok, Marvel's best-reviewed movie of all-time and a release which sees him voicing Korg, a character destined to become a fan-favourite. However, a link between these two movies exists which will definitely surprise you!

So, where in Thor: Ragnarok does this nod to Green Lantern come into play? Well, when Skurge is showing his "stuff" to a couple of Asgardian ladies, it turns out that the Shake Weight hails from the DC Universe. Sort of. "The Shake Weight is actually a DC crossover," Waititi tells Fandango. "That’s my Shake Weight. That’s mine, and that was something I bought while I was in Green Lantern."

While the Shake Weight didn't appear in Green Lantern, Waititi still actually views it as a crossover!

"So I was in New Orleans and I was in Green Lantern, but I was barely doing anything. I’d be in my hotel room and it’d be like 1 AM, and the infomercial for the Shake Weight came on. I was like, “Screw it! I guess I’m buying everything I see on TV tonight – I’m gonna buy knives and some sewing thing. I bought exercise DVDs, too, but the one thing I bought that I kept was that Shake Weight… and then I had it shipped to Australia and I put it in the movie!"

Other than that, Thor: Ragnarok is crammed full of references to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and we'll bring you a full breakdown of those later today. What do you guys think of Waititi's comments?

@OptimusGrime - I'd say it's more craziness from the director than click bait. They did mention the fact that there was a sort of reference.

@OptimusGrime - yeah. I'm not a fan of waiti myself at least in terms of directing these major superhero movies. He just seems like he can't be taken seriously and if this is any indication I don't like his humor either.

I don't think that counts as a connection, T-dubs.

Of course there is the Kirby connection.
Both this film and the upcoming Justice League have elements that were directed by Joss Whedon (the ScarJo footage in the Quinjet) and you could kind of see them as being directly sequential, due to the work of Jack Kirby.

I'm trying not to get too spoilery, here, but if you've seen the movie, already, then take a look at the end of Jack Kirby's Thor #128 and then take a look at the beginning of his New Gods #1.

One of the panels from the DC version looks a lot like that last shot of Asgard from the last scene in Thor: Ragnarok than one of the panels from the Marvel version. And we all know that Justice League is about the New Gods and may even begin with a brief introduction to The Fourth World.

Also, I just noticed a sly GOTG reference in BvS; In the Ultimate Edition one of the GCPD says Charlie-27.

That has to be the worst try at forcing in a totally unlinked thing in to a film...

If that's a Green Lantern link then my arse is a soldering iron!

He's definitely a little weird, but it works for the movie and the humor was on point. He's a good director, wouldn't mind him and Gunn working together on GOTG 3.
