Update: Idris Elba Talks Thor and The Losers

What's it like to portray a Nordic God?
IESB also caught up with Elba to talk a little about Heimdall.

Idris Elba is portraying two comic book characters. One is a Norse God and the other is an ex special forces operative. What do these two characters have in common (besides Elba)? Both were originally drawn as white characters. Elba touches base on how barriers are being broken down in casting after a press conference for The Losers.

On Roque, from The Losers, being originally a white character:

"There was no reflection on that in the screenplay but I definitely used Roque in the comic book as my skeleton to build my Roque. So I stayed as true as I could to him. The scar was the only physical attribute that I took from the comic book and applied to myself. Other than that, I just used his personality, his persona in the comic book to make my Roque."

The actor is taking the same approach portaying Heimdall in next year's Thor

"Yeah, casting now is taking definitely a more open-eyed approach to it. I was cast in Thor and I’m cast as a Nordic god. If you know anything about the Nords, they don’t look like me but there you go. I think that’s a sign of the times for the future. I think we will see multi-level casting. I think we will see that and I think that’s good."

With Thor do you look at the comic books or Nordic mythology?

"I looked at the comic books actually because Heimdall, he’s a very central character and I wanted to reflect him as he is in the comic books."

Elba was also asked what his character will look like in Thor?

"[Laughs] I look like how he’s designed, man. I can’t say but he looks phenomenal."

Will Heimdall get any action scenes?

"Yeah, I do, yeah. I can’t say, brother, but it’s really, really cool."

In the comics, Heimdall is the brother of the warrior Sif. He is the all-seeing and all-hearing guardian sentry of Asgard, he stands on the rainbow bridge, Bifrost and stands watch for any attacks to Asgard.

Update: IESB also talked to Elba while the actor was out promoting The Losers. Here is the excerpt on Thor:
IESB: Now that you’re doing Thor, what’s it like to be a part of a big adventure epic?

Idris: It’s great. Thor is really, really an epic drama that has Thor as the centerpiece. I'm playing Heimdall, which is great. It feels like a big play. Kenneth Branagh is paying attention to detail. I'm very proud to be there. It's really special.

IESB: For those who aren't familiar with the story, who is Heimdall?

Idris: Everyone in Thor comes from Asgard – Odin and Thor. Asgard is protected by Heimdall. So, if you come in or leave Asgard, you have to go through his observatory, which is pretty much where all of my scenes are.

IESB: Will the costumes have a traditional look?

Idris: I can’t say too much about it. It’s traditional, in the sense of what the comic book has. They're being very cognizant about that and trying to make that authentic. At the same time, it’s a movie, so you can embellish it a little bit more.

For the full interview go HERE.

DogsOfWar-Personally, I don't mind changes like these for non-iconic characters. Still not a whole lot revealed but it sounds like his role will be integral to the movie with multiple scenes at Bifrost.

First what? Douche of the day? :P

Elba's a fantastic actor. If he'd been cast as Thor, I might have had a reservation or two, but no problems at all with him playing Heimdall. I'm sure he'll be excellent.

I'm not too bothered about them changing the characters racebut I cant help but feel like it's just a "token" casting decision in what would have otherwise been a movie featuring a cast made of mostly of white actors..!

I'm far more concerned with why we still havent heard if Balder will be in the movie!!!

Race is a 1950 issue today it dose not matter....they changed Nick Fury so Sam Jackson could play him. I say this is bad ass. If you can not get past something this small don't see the movie. SO Stoked for 2011.

Yeah Idris deserves this role man, he is a fantastic actor and full of no BS. Heimdall will be kick ass and I really like how casting is looking at diversity nowadays.

It's so great to have Idris Elba in both projects. Hell, it's great to have him back on screen because he's such an amazing actor.

He makes me miss The Wire, though.

Seriously why do people even care if he's black or not? Heimdall isn't too big of a character in the comics anyway changing his race isn't a big deal. Obviously the only reason they did it was because it would seem unfair that all of the blonde haired blue eyed guys are Gods and there are no black Gods. You need to be diverse.

@drax94: You haven't see The Wire then I take it? He's possibly the most charismatic actor in it (his Stringer Bell is only rivalled in that respect by Omar).

I couldn't care less if he's black or white..He is a fine actor and will do a great job. Also I don't think he will be the ONLY black guy in the movie so...whatever

I think the bigger news here is Heimdall gets in on the action scenes.

Let's see a big epic battle on the Rainbow Bridge!

drax94@ Elba lacks charisma? Not sure where you get that from.

As for the race thing, only the die-hard Thor fans that have issues with casting being racially perfect will be upset over this. Mainstream movie watchers go to be entertained. They won't know who Heimdall is and won't care if he is red, yellow, black or white as long as the part is played well.

I love Elba, I am especially pleased that we are getting him in CBMs now.

I don't mind race changes in casting, I do it in my fan casts all the time, I think if the actor that is best suited fro teh role is a different race, who cares. I mean Keith David is teh perfect choice for Mister Sinister, a white character (and my favorite Marvel villain) and I am for David fo the role.

But what bugs me is thst this is more than just a comic character, this is based off of centuries of mythology and lore that is being ignored. I mean he is Sif's brother, are they going to ignore that now? Are we getting equal opportunity Norse Gods now?

I mean people still worship these figures in parts of the world. It would be like casting a white guy as Jes... nevermind. that was wrong to.......

THEHAWK@ I hear you, because I grew up reading Norse Mythology and was a huge fan. I couldn't get enough of it. If one stops and dwells on it, it can tick some off that they would cast Sif's brother as a black person, but for some reason it doesn't bother me....though it should. I don't think too many people will have an issue with it, but I can understand why they would.

Well, I'm a historry buff, I am angry whenever something historical is changed, and this is efectively altering a religoius belief.

I was mad when Mel Gibson cast the Passion.

DogsOfWar - 4/12/2010, 10:00 AM
Hawk-How can you say this is effectively altering a religious belief? This is a movie based on a comic book character. If you truly believe that, Thor should never have been made at all or any Greek, Roman god movies/literature either.

Idris looks bad ass and tough like Heimdall. I could imagine him with chopping troll heads off with a big sword. Hogun's in the movie, so I'm sure they'll find a way to make it all work. I'm imagining Heimdall, Volstagg, and Hogun in the same shot... awesome.

@Hawk

I am a Scandinavian Canadian and can say that you should just get over it.

The comic Thor is inspired by Norse mythology and has a lot that is different from the original mythology. I don't recall a Hogun and some other comic characters being in the sagas. And Thor originally had a belt of might (strength), gauntlets that allowed him to crush rock like it were nothing, fiery red eyes and hair and beard. He also didn't use his hammer to teleport or fly, he had a cart pulled by a couple of goats. And the stories would tell of him drinking oceans, and other things that the comic Thor has never done. Loki and Thor were also originally drinking buddies.

Even the pagan religion has evolved over time. In fact, all religion evolves over time.

Personally, I like the Thor from Marvel. I take the multiverse approach when watching these Marvel movies, where a story can take many roads and still be true to the characters being portrayed. Multiverse is the best way to deal with canon issues. If it's good enough for the comics creators, it should be good enough for the films.

And I really like Kenneth Branagh's work. I think Thor is going to be a lot of fun.
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 4/12/2010, 10:41 AM
Dogs@ I guess I was meaning that though the movie is based off the comic book, the comic book is still based off of Norse mythology, so authenticity to some will be important, even if the comics are a go-between medium. Having a black Norse God is very contrary to Norse mythology, which is a religious belief system. I can live with it, but those who are really into Norse mythology won't be and I can understand that.

CyberViking@ Yes, the hammer was a Marvel Comic addition to the character. I don't expect the comics to match the mythology perfectly, just like I don't expect a movie to match the comics perfectly. I think having a black man as a Norse God is stretching it a bit, considering he wasn't black in the comics as well. Again, I am fine with it, but I can completely understand why others could be upset about it. I know my adopted grandparents who were full-blooded Norwegian and got me started in reading Norse Mythology would be upset as all get out if they were still alive today and heard about the casting of Heimdall.
