Viking Festival Hints How Thor Movie Could Look

You may be asking yourself what a Scandanavian Viking Festival has to do with Thor, read on and hopefully I can clear things up...

How are the people tasked with the Herculian effort of bringing Thor and all his fellow Asgardians to life going to get the characters to look presentable on screen? How can they make the movie appear believable? This question seems to rear its ugly little head whenever somebody mentions any of the news that is good and right about the movie Thor.

I stumbled on this article on boston.com about the Up Helly Aa Festival that is held every year. In my opinion these costumes, outfits, styles of clothing look fantastic. They appear to be authentic, beutiful, intimidating and timeless.

I doubt Thors costume designers are looking at this Festival for inspiration but in my opinion they should.

Up Helly Aa celebrates the influence of the Scandinavian vikings in the Shetland Islands, marking the end of the yule season, and has employed this theme in the festival since 1870. The event culminates with up to 1,000 'guizers' (men in costume) throwing flaming torches into a Viking longship. The event happens all over Shetland, but it is only the Lerwick galley which is not sent seaward. Everywhere else, the flaming galley is sent into the sea, in an echo of actual Viking sea burials.

Check out these pictures and let me know if they convince any nay sayers that Thor can look fantastic on film. When I first looked at them all I could say was WOW!

I'm sure some of you will read this and wonder what it has to do with CBM's. I think it has everything to do with them. This is how Vikings and Norsemen can and should look.

If Branagh can bring this look to the big screen, I have no doubt in my mind that Thor will be EPIC indeed.

What do you think?

Multi: I actualy found it last night but I had a buzz on and didn't feel like doing it. When I looked at it again this evening I felt like I had to share it.
I thought the same thing about posting it but the pics are just too cool, I had to put it up.

shifty: You got to attend this event? I envy you. What a blast.

Thanks guys, I thought most users would enjoy this.

Grif: This has nothing at all to do "with" Thor. The pictures of this festival are however, extremely pertinent to the Thor movie.
Every time the subject of the Thor movie comes up there are people saying that Thor, the Vikings and all of Asgard are not going to be able to be made "believable" on screen.
Here is a large group of people who I'm sure, don't have the same budget that the Thor movie does. They have created not only passable costumes, but downright awsome ones.
I believe these pics should help lay aside any fears that Thor, can be at the very least, visually stunning and not doomed to cheesyness.

btw, I've nursed a thought for awhile now!

They should have Thor only spout his quotes
in Olde English when he's in the heat of battle!

It would give them more of an impact and then he
wouldn't be spouting OE all the time!
:D

Ugh: I agree.

DDD: Glad you like it bud.:)
I want to hear Thor spout out some of his quotes however I can get them. We get pirate festivals here in Florida they are awsome as well.

LEEE: I've been meaning to see Outlander. Is it any good? I know alot of people didn't, but I liked Pathfinder.

I don't know why every time I looked at this pictures
I hear the Village People's song "In the Navy"?

Oh yeah, now I remembered.
When I was a kid there is a skit the Muppet Show
which featured Vikings(muppet pigs) singing that song. X-D

@HAWKS
In my humble opinion OUTLANDER was awesome!
Jim Caviezel was great, the alien tech was
cool and the monster/alien was actually badass!

This movie started out with a bigger budget
then it got tossed around by movie companies
until the Director/producer/writer had to
finish it off himself with his own money!

I think he made a pretty damm good movie with all
that going against it! Caviezel stuck to it
even after the director told him he could back
out if he wanted to, after it all got jumbled
down to a lower budget!

But I personally knew Caviezel when he was
really young and he isn't made that way! Once
he commits to something he sticks with it to the
end!

It is an awesome sight. 1,000 firey torches marching through a blacked-out town to burn a replica Galley ship, led by a large squad of Vikings. Superb: www.uphellyaa.org or www.shetland.org for more information.
