Back in January of last year, we learned that The Bear breakout Ayo Edebiri was set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe when she landed an undisclosed role in the upcoming Thunderbolts movie.
Edebiri has only briefly spoken about her involvement in the Phase 5 film but while chatting to Backstage Magazine about her voice-role as April O'Neil in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and while she did express her excitement for the project and her MCU journey ahead, she didn't disclose any details about her character.
“I love being a sponge. I just want to learn as much as possible. I’m excited [for ‘Thunderbolts’] because I don’t know; and to me, that’s cool. I feel like those are always the situations that I’ve benefited from the most. If I don’t know what I’m going to learn, that’s the best possible scenario for me.”
Now, we may know who Edebiri will play.
According to scooper Can We Get Some Toast, the Bottoms star has been cast as a character named Erin, who is Valentina Allegra de Fontaine's (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) assistant. Erin is said to be "exceptional at her job, even surprising Val with how good she is at getting things done.
There are several Erins in the comics, but none that really fit this description, so we'd say this character was most likely created for the movie.
Though other characters might well be added, the Thunderbolts roster currently consists of Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).
Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine will put the team together, and may also be partially responsible for Sentry's creation. Harrison Ford will replace the late William Hurt as Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, who may wind up transforming into the Red Hulk.
The Walking Dead and Invincible creator Kirkman recently came right out and said: "My good friend Steven Yeun is playing the Sentry in a movie."
“Yeah, he called me, he went in for a costume fitting. I hope I’m not… I don’t think this is a spoiler or anything that will get anybody in trouble. I don’t know, maybe. We’ll see. I don’t care. I don’t work for Marvel. What are they going to do to me? He called me and he said, 'I just came back from a costume fitting for the Sentry. I guess I only do superheroes that are yellow and blue.' He said he was at the costume fitting and was like, 'Aww, crap. I forgot Invincible was yellow and blue.'"
Jake Schreier (Robot and Frank, Dave) is set to direct, with Black Widow scribe Eric Pearson penning the script.
The Hollywood strikes recently resulted in Thunderbolts being pushed from December 20, 2024, to July 25, 2025.
