LAZOR WULF Exclusive: Comic Creator Henry Bonsu On Making An Adult Swim Show With THE BOONDOCKS' Carl Jones

Adult Swim fans who regularly tune in for the station's Sunday midnight line-up will be met tomorrow with the first two episodes of Lazor Wulf Season 2, titled Still Dying to Eat and If That Was Tomorrow. This Is Today.

For those unfamiliar with Lazor Wulf, it is an Adult Swim series that initially launched in early 2019, though it originated as a webcomic nearly a decade ago. The show features a very diverse cast, which includes rappers like Vince Staples and Shelley (formerly known as D.R.A.M.) as well as WWE Superstars Big E and the rest of The New Day.

While the series is the product of a collaborative process between several people, one of the most significant and well-known contributors to the series is Carl Jones, the creator of the popular and influential comic and Adult Swim series, The Boondocks. Not only did Jones serve as a writer on Season 1, but he also penned the premiere episode of Season 2, and he even lends his voice to the series with the character of Mayor Webb, who is also returning for the new episodes.

When Adult Swim asked us to speak with Bonsu, we couldn't wait to pick his brain about what it's like to work alongside Carl Jones, who was his inspiration when he was younger. Here's a sample of our chat in which Henry touches on working with the legendary Boondocks creator.

"The dialogue is meant to fill out and flesh out this new world that, regardless of who you are or how you feel, you can be comfortable chilling, and hopefully, it makes you feel like it's an Adult Swim property, but at the same time, it makes you feel like it's a new Adult Swim properly too. So we're trying to scratch off all of these things.

I grew up in love with The Boondocks, and getting to work with Carl Jones is awesome, man. And I would read the comics in the newspaper. So it's one of those things where I'm hoping someone just like me when I was younger, could come on the show and have fun with it and follow more of the show, but also like what these artists and these writers make beyond that too; and that ushers them into this, you know? And I shouldn't stem into either enjoying it or making something. I like all of it. And Carl wrote on this season too he wrote what would be episode one, and he also comes back to voice Mayor Webb again for us, and it's a fun time."

Listen to our full chat with Henry Bonsu on Literary Joe's Inner Child Podcast below, and be sure to check out the trailer and synopsis at the bottom. As always, feel free to share your thoughts in the usual spot!
