Emmy-Nominated JESSICA JONES Helmer Will Direct The First Two WHEEL OF TIME Episodes For Amazon

The timing couldn't be more perfect for Amazon Studios as they're set to launch a long-awaited adaptation of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time fantasy series just as HBO looks to wrap up Game of Thrones.

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.....

That opening holds a special place in the hearts of many longtime fans of Robert Jordan's long-running Wheel of Time fantasy series. After the author's death, completion of the series by Brandon Sanderson, and a tragically inept pilot episode, traction on Amazon's Wheel of Time adaptation has finally begun.

Based on the description of the show, it seems Moraine Aes Sedai will be the lead, rather than Rand, Matt or Perrin. Perhaps that's why Jessica Jones episode director Uta Briesewitz was selected to helm the show's first two episodes. Briesewitz's credits also include Westworld, Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black, Fear the Walking Dead and numerous other genre shows.

Deadline's description of the show is as follows:

"The story follows Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the ‘Aes Sedai’ as she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women. Moiraine believes one of them might be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, whom prophecies say will either save humanity or destroy it. The series draws on numerous elements of European and Asian culture and philosophy, most notably the cyclical nature of time found in Buddhism and Hinduism."

That's more or less how the first book in the series, The Eye of the World, unfolds so it appears the Amazon adaptation will be staying true to the books, at least at the outset.

Stay tuned to CBM for future updates.

This and Lord of the Rings being made by Amazon is going to be great. Now if only Amazon would make a tv series based off of Rifts I'd be super excited.

@BlackIceJoe - I think WoT is a better fit for a TV series than the works of Tolkien. Tolkien avoided the modern way of writing characters that is instead a staple of all TV writing nowadays.

Now where's my Conan the Barbarian series from Amazon?
Couple of rumors came about that they already cancelled, but Amazon themselves have said nothing official.
Anyway, they supposedly had a few GOT guys involved, so the potential was there.

Moiaraine as the PoV character? I'm in, this might also be a good way to use material from New Spring for flashbacks. Though I wonder how they'll deal with what happens later.

I like WoT for the most part but the dragon reborn is the Mary Sue Rey of Star Wars. The dragon gets way too OP IMO as the story progresses and was the least favorite character in WoT.

@Deagle - Eh. Not really. He is in the first 3-5 books, but Rand becomes less of a Mary Sue as he begins to struggle with his insanity and because colder and more violent as the series progresses, prone to more morally grey actions.

Sweet. Moraine as pov seems interesting. I'm only on book 2 now but liking the series. Hopefully I can finish the books before the show starts.

I would give anything for Amazon to do a Dragonlance series. Also can we get a rebooted proper Shannara series (maybe even start with the Word and Void/Genesis stuff to lay the groundwork) while we are at it?

@Thanson - Tracy Hickman just recently made an announcement for a new Dargonlnce project.

r/Dragonlance is speculating an Amazon show. I also heard Joe Manganiello was trying to get a movie up and running last year. He’d be dope Sturm.

I enjoyed the books, but I'm not really feeling Moraine as the lead. If anything it should be done as an ensemble without a particular lead. There's too much time where everyone is apart, and the events at each location are all important. It doesn't feel like there's a lot of room here for a 'lead' in that way.

Moraine as lead character will likely end up a feint. If you've read the books, to maintain mystery and secrecy and the element of surprise for the viewing audience that has not read the books, portraying her as the lead for season 1 - especially at the beginning - is the only way that makes sense. But it won't last.

Nice! I'm just finishing up this series. On the second to last book right now so perfect timing.

However this is a massive series with a huge scale. They're going to need a killer budget to do it justice.

Neat! I didn't know this was happening. I just finished the first book on Audible and was going to start the second today. Thanks Amazon for giving me something I wanted before I knew I wanted it.
