Adam Mckay On His Vision For The Boys Movie Adaptation

The Anchorman director talks exclusively to Collider about his thoughts on approaching a movie adaptation of Garth Ennis's The Boys...

We have heard that Anchorman Director Adam McKay was in serious talks to helm the adaptation of The Boys. When Collider sat down to talk to him about his latest film The Other Guys, they asked him all about it..

In the vid he confirms that they are in the middle of talks, but that nothing is definite yet. He puts to rest the notion that like so many properties, the film could be pg13 saying "It doesn't work unless it’s R.” He said he told Sony it has to be R and they are on board with the rating. He then compared The Boys to Watchmen saying it’s a “current day Watchmen” and that it it looks at what a hero is and “places it in a time where monopolies have bought our country and you incorporate that as well.” Then says he hasn’t been that excited about something in a long time.

Ok, first of all, the Watchmen comparison really doesn't hold up for me! I mean I like The Boys but to try to put any kind of real weight to the story is a bit ludicrous. Ennis likes to write about sex and violence, sometimes both at the same time..thats pretty much what that comic is ABOUT! But then again I haven't read em all yet, maybe there is some mystical revelation of high art that I don't know about. Anyway, I'm glad this looks to be moving forward, McKay is clearly a big fan so I'm sure he will do it justice.

I agree @wakeup! And P862010...Butler WOULD be perfect for Butcher! I love this series, great comedy and of course, Simon Pegg most definitely needs to be in this as Hugh.

I get the Watchmen comparison, both are stories about what the world would be like with super-heros, but it isn't a very good comparison.

Oh, and Ray Stevenson would make a great Butcher.
I second Pegg as wee Hughie.
Chad Coleman (Cutty Wise from The Wire) as Mother's Milk, yall!

I don't like The Preacher all that much, but no, not really. It's the American Pie of comic books.

haha, yeah that about sums it up. The first 2 volumes were very good, despite its juvenile themes, I thought it may have something to say..it doesn't, except "Watch me super[frick] this chick and then punch her head off" I loved Preacher, it had a bit of Ennis's silliness but mainly it was very well written and the characters were actually likable. The only sympathetic character in The Boys is Wee Hughie, and even he got annoying.

Garret, Cutty would be a great Mothers Milk alright. But goin a bit more well known I'd say Sam jackson..I know, the obvious choice and not very popular nowadays, but think about it. Mothers Milk is not actually a very over the top character at all, in fact he's the calmest of the bunch. Jackson always excels in roles that don't require him to go over board. And if he's not quite big enough, ah well, send him to the gym for a while and I can live without the bulk. Bill is basically a big, violent, dark haired Michael Caine, needs to be an English actor to pull that off or the accent will sound awful. Butler might pull it off, its a shame Ray Winston isn't 20 years younger and 40 pounds lighter! Has to be Pegg as Hughie of course, if anyone else played him it wouldn't seem right. I know The Female is Asian, but someone tiny like Christina Ricci or Ellen page would be great otherwise, sticking to the book it would again be the obvious choice for me, Zhang Zihi. The Freenchman has to be Vincent Cassel.

The Frenchman should be Cyril Raffaelli from District B13 and Live Free or Die Hard. The guy is an excellent martial artist, and is French. Plus he kinda looks like the guy....

Vincet Cassel is a great actor, but I don't see it. Just saw him in Irreversible and he was excellent. The film was hard to watch though....whoa!

I once would have said Sammy Naceri from the Taxi movie series, but recent events in the comic heavily hint toward the Frenchman being just an insane, Francophile Brit. So I think I'd prefer someone like, I dunno, Jason Flemyng or someone. Flemyng speaks French pretty well, actually, so he could work well with either interpretation.
