THE WALKING DEAD Just Introduced Negan But Is Already Teasing The Whisperers

The official Walking Dead Instagram account has posted an ominous image seemingly hinting at the introduction of the next main antagonist after Negan - The Whisperers. Major Spoilers

For many longtime Walking Dead fans, the appeal of the hit AMC TV show meant falling behind on the actual comic books from Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard.  That means there are tons of Day 1 comic readers, who didn't want to potentially spoil the show, that may not know what happens after the Negan arc runs its course.  If you don't want to have that spoiled...TURN BACK NOW.

After a Negan is successfully "dealt with" The Walking Dead comic book introduces a massive time skip with many new, safe settlements springing up.  Rick Grimes becomes something of a living legend and Carl struggles to live in his father's shadow.  However, that's just the backdrop for the introduction of a new threat.  What seemingly looks like Walkers talking or "whispering" turns out to be other survivors who learned to blend in by wearing the skin of other recently deceased survivors.  Remember early on in the series when Rick escaped out of the tank in downtown Atlanta by covering himself in horse intestines and blending in with the horde or Walkers.  Well, these guys have taken that concept to the next level.  Instead of harming the undead, they live among them. Introducing The Whisperers at this stage seems a tad premature as there's still a ton of material with Negan to explore.  Most fans expected the Negan conflict to take a full season (if not two) to fully depict.  The Instagram tease has led many fans to wonder if the arc will be shortened due to Jeffrey Dean Morgan's limited availability.

As for the Instagram post itself, the image itself is a clue as a major turning point in The Whisperer arc is when a few members from that group take of their Walker skins, infiltrate a settlement and capture a number of residents.  They aggressively establish a boundary by cutting of the heads of those captured, placing them on pikes and lining them up to form a borderline.  One of the lines The Whisperer leader says to Rick is, "You've been warned."

You’ve been warned – #TWD premieres October 23.

I don't even watch the Walking Dead currently or have ever read it, but man, this is a cool concept!

Knowing The Walking Dead show however, it will probably drag the conflict on for far too long.

Hardly a new concept to the show, with the gang using that trick a bunch of times and Michonne masking herself to blend with walkers etc. I'd rather more Negan, JDM Is a wicked villain. Hope it rivals the governor arc, which I loved. I know it's a zombie show but... Zombies are boring. I find the human villains more interesting. Zombies have been the subject of hundreds of movies and tv shows lately, they're played out.

@connorblaze - The new concept comes in when its actually villains using the zombies as their camouflage.

Imagine Rick and his crew coming up on what they think is a group of Walkers, only to have gunfire erupt from them. It would catch Rick's crew completely off guard.

This could also be a head on a pike in front of the Saviors compound..

Actually its a really dumb concept given that the Walkers in this show only use smells to find victims - so there is no point of them exposing themselves to rotting and deceased parts of other survivors so much. Especially given when someone dies in the show they become a zombie.

A zombie bite is not needed to turn someone into a zombie in this show given they are all infected and the process can either be spread-up by zombie blood/bites.

Plus there are multiple factions, specifically Rick and his team, who actually go out to intentionally kill Walkers - so the whisperers would be mowed down much easier than the walkers and automatically be labelled as a target because they look like walkers.

Adding to that the point that the whisperers would be weaker and easier to kill than regular zombies. Along with this previous episodes have established that rain and other aspects would ruin the disguise so they have the possibility of the disguise failing and them being killed by zombies.

So;
- They are easier to kill than zombies
- The disguise can fail at any point (especially in rain)
- They are an easy target given they look like zombies
- They risk the chance of infection and could turn into zombies at any point
- They wouldn't be able to carry visible weapons for long without being spotted

Seems like a really stupid idea born of the concept of trying to design a villain that looks like a zombie but has the intelligence of a human.

They'll probably just save the Whisperers for Season 8. Negan definitely deserves a full season.

Is there going to be a "Common enemy" thing?

@TheSoulEater - You mean someone who's the enemy of both the Alexandrians and the Saviors? If so, the answer is yes

Hey Mark, not sure what show you've been watching, but there were no horse (or zombie) intestines involved in Rick's escape from the tank. None whatsoever.

I hope it isn't the Whisperers, it's way too early to introduce them

Maybe this is what Tara and Heath have been dealing with on their trip? I can't imagine why they'd otherwise bring the Whisperers into the show this early on, aside from Negan possibly mentioning them.

I'm thinking they are gearing up for the ending of the series. I think they'll have their fight with Negan, but in the end They will have to work together to take down the Whisperers, and after the war, the show will end. I don't see it going on much longer.

@dpunkjrocksm - I thought the same thing after All Out War. Then they introduced the Whisperers and I was like. "Are they ever going to do something that doesn't keep my attention?" Robert Kirkman MIGHT end the series after the war between the Whisperers and the other colonies. But at the same time, I imagine he'll keep going until he gets tired of writing it, or dies. Whichever comes first. Lol.

You know, for a show that always says they have kids of material for Seasons to come and how they're a long time away from catching up, they do like to just jump the gun. Seriously they just got to the Prison and already they introduce the Governor. They're finally settled into Alexandria? Cue Negan tease
