Speaking at the Edinburgh TV festival, the show's creator, Neil Cross, said that "The show's finished. Idris, as he should be, has gone on to be a big movie star,"

The Film will feature Luthers early days and his rise through the department which should appeal to fans of the show as well as general public who have never seen it.

"I've written the script and we hope to get the film made next year," said Cross, who has also written a Luther novel and is working on a second. "Idris is a brilliant leading man and we've hoped to turn Luther into a movie for a long time. It will follow his career in the earlier days, when he is still married to Zoe [played in the first series by Indira Varma], and the final scene in the film is the first of the initial TV series."

Making a prequel would allow Cross to bring back some of the TV series' original characters: Justin Ripley (Warren Brown) Luther's sidekick, his disgraced colleague Ian Reed (Steven Mackintosh), and his wife Zoe.
Although There's no place for Luther's murderous confidante Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson)as the detective does not meet her until later in the series.

So what you think? Want to see more of Luther? That is if you have already seen the show. If you haven't- Do it...

I love Luther, so I'm happy to hear about the movie, but also sad that season 3 will likely be the last.

At the very least, Idris needs more leading roles.

Cool, I like that show!

He would've made a great BISHOP... tho he's played 2 Marvel characters already.

Looking forward to this LUTHER prequel.

LOL @ TTT0809 : D

Heh. Never heard of the show, but the name makes me think that he's actually be a stellar candidate for Lex Luthor. If you've ever seen 'The Wire', you'll know that Elba can play a damn good villain.

He always said his original plan for this was 3 seasons, then a movie if the show was well liked... A man of his word

This is bullshit! Martin Luther was a white dude! Elba's not even German! I'm sick and tired of Hollywood giving roles that have traditionally been portrayed as white to black actors! Exclamation points!!!

Seriously, he would be a fantastic Lex Luthor. I'd really like to see a black Lex. It would an add an interesting dynamic.

I would trade Zoe, Ian, and even my man Ripley for more Alice.

I definitely would love to see a Luthor film but I'd prefer it to continue the story rather than going back to the Prequel.

LOOFAH!!!

Awesome that it gives us some prologue on John's career and relationships. I'm wondering how Justin will factor in though, seeing as how he was introduced in the first episode. Great for building new interest in the series, too.

Though Driis would make a great Lex, I'd much rather see him as John Stewart in the Justice League movie.

This is an odd coincidence, got the box set delivered today and have just finished watching season one. Anyway, would love this, although it'd mean a pretty big shift in the usual cast dynamic (no Alice or Justin since they first meet Luther in Episode 1, Ian and Zoe would probably be more prominent).

This could be great if done right though, only thing is that with a prequel it means we pretty much know how it'll end, especially considering his comment that the film's last scene will be the TV series' first.

This is a hell of a series. I happened to come across it last year and just finished getting caught up. I am ready for the new season, which starts next week. I wouldn't mind seeing a prequel, but would really like to see a continuation of the current character.

If they can make this next year and Idris Elba's willing to do it it would round the character's story off perfectly.

Here's hoping.

Sequel, prequel, I don't care, but MORE Luther. MORE MORE MORE.

I love Luther but by far and away half the reason it's entertaining is because of Alice Morgan and the Hannibal Lecter/Clarise Starling relationship.

I seriously wish they'd stop making prequels to stuff that don't need it. The actors all got older with every passing year the series lasted and now you want them to star in a prequel? Just progress the story with a film of Alice and Luther or lay the series to rest.

If he had an interesting story set before the first series then that story would have been the first series. This is a typical cop out of what happens when writers have no more story to meet with studio demands. Go back and tell the story you had no intention of telling in the first place.
