EXCLUSIVE: ARROW Star Juliana Harkavy Discusses Suiting Up As Black Canary In Season 6

We recently had the chance to catch up with Arrow star Juliana Harkavy and she talks to us here about that awesome new Black Canary costume and how Dinah Drake's abilities will evolve moving into season 6.

Juliana Harkavy's Dinah Drake was an unexpected addition to season five of Arrow but it took no time at all for her to become a fan-favourite character in The CW series. As the new Black Canary, her story arc played out quite slowly but by the time the finale rolled around, she'd taken down Black Siren and finally stepped forward and embraced her destiny. Well, until getting blown up on Lian Yu, of course!

Luckily, we know that Dinah is one of those who
manage to survive and it wasn't too long ago that a very cool photo of her suited up as the new Black Canary was released. You'll be able to check out our full interview with the actress tomorrow but here's what she said about finally donning that costume.

"Well, we found out pretty soon into season five that there would be a costume. It was funny because we were actually trying to find a place where it would be the right time for her to be in full costume and it just didn't feel right. We knew we had to wait and that she was still coming into her own and still wasn't fully accepting the mantle. So, when it was time to actually do it and put it on, it was actually quite emotional the first time because I felt like I had grown as a person in real life as well as how Dinah came into her own and was ready, so yeah, it was a very cool and exciting moment to put it on."

As for what we should expect when it comes to Dinah's powers now that she has a device which will allow her to better control those, Juliana explained that it will play a pivotal role in the character's journey to becoming a better fighter and using them in some new and very creative sounding ways.

"I think it's going to part of her training as she improves as a fighter and uses her skills as a more powerful and controlled weapon. It was just a stepping stone for her to expand her abilities and that will continue for sure as she works on getting better and stronger."

Sounds pretty cool, right? Tomorrow, you'll be able to find Juliana's thoughts on everything from a Green Arrow/Black Canary romance to her battles with Black Siren, the demanding stunt work which playing a hero like this requires, her hopes for this year's Arrowverse crossover, and much, much more. As always, feel free to share your thoughts in her remarks here down in the comments section.

Just finished season 5 on Netflix like 20 mins ago and i gotta be honest...season 5 was good. The finale was great. Hoping for the show to go up from there.

@Kevwebsz - I mostly skipped the first half apart from a few episodes, but I tuned right before the reveal episodes, and then caught up with the season after the torture episode (17, I think) which is honestly quite possibly my favourite arrow episode

I really don't like what they've done with the Black Canary character on this show. She's so awesome and smart in the comics, yet has been constantly treated terribly on this show...

my 2 cents.

@L0RDbuckethead - I love Arrow.....I was happy for the way season 5 turned out. I will take your 2 cents regarding Black Canary.....she has been mishandled. I think it all went wrong when Arrow started out and they refused to give any of their characters powers........

Really liked Dinah last season, but Sarah is still the best Black Canary. City Lotz is actually a trained martial artist so her fight scenes were all kickass and unlike all the other Black Canary's, she wasn't Oliver's sidekick or trainee, she was his equal.

She's a much better Black Canary and her acting is more on point. Not a fan of the stick figure girls anyway.

Hey Josh Wilding how did she become a fan favorite. If you go on twitter or any other blogs she is pretty hated. Nothing against her actress but she is a product of lazy writing. Marky G and Wendy killed off Laurel because she was in the way of their precious Olicity, hate Katie Cassidy for some reason and fulfill that stupid grave pot without knowing who and picked Laurel at random. They didn't expect backlash killing Black Canary so they brought in Earth 2 Laurel but since she supposedly cant be redeemed, according to Felicity, they created in Tina the Fake Canary. Not to mention what they are planning they could have easily done for Laurel

@ninjamaster88 - Internet noise does not equal reality. A few twitter trolls don't speak for the millions who watch the show silently.

Despite what some people on this site say I think Katie Cassidy is a good actress. I seen her in other stuff and was the best thing about that awful Elm Street remake which she should have been the final girl. Not to mention both Earth 1 and Earth 2 Laurel are well developed and Black Siren has so much potential for a good redemption storyline while Tina/Dinah come off as flat, boring, and uninteresting.

@ninjamaster88 - Good actresses can be bad in some properties. I've yet to see a property she is good in, but Cassidy lowers the quality of Arrow every time her dumb face is on screen. Also, she was a terrible Canary because she was completely incompetent in all her action scenes and couldn't perform the simplest action choreography to save her life.

Good riddance. Even Black Siren being on the show is a step backwards.

I miss Katie Cassidy. I was so invested in her character and I thought she made a great Canary. This new chick is cool too, but there's zero chemistry between her and Oliver, so it just feels off. I think the producers made a big mistake recasting the character. My favorite comic version was from Earth 2, so maybe they can find some way to rehabilitate the evil Canary and kill this one off.
