The Suicide Squad was released last month to rave reviews and disappointing box office numbers. The pandemic, its HBO Max release, and an apparent lack of interest in the franchise from regular moviegoers all contributed to the movie underperforming, of course, and it's left the chances of a sequel somewhat up in the air.
Writer and director James Gunn will be busy working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for the next few years anyway, but the Peacemaker TV series is pretty much done and heading to streaming next January. It could be that Task Force X's future lies on the small screen, and the filmmaker has now said that, to him, the show essentially serves as "The Suicide Squad 2."
While The Suicide Squad's post-credits scene made it clear that this show picks up after the events of the movie, it's still interesting to hear Peacemaker described this way.
What got fans most excited, however, was Gunn noting that "I'm open" to working on a third chapter in the story; what form that will take remains to be seen, though he may not necessarily be referring to a feature. It could be that "TSS3" is going to be another TV show, possibly focusing on characters like Ratcatcher 2 or Bloodsport (though the director did recently debunk rumours that a project revolving around that assassin is in any sort of active development right now).
Ultimately, Peacemaker's streaming numbers will be key in deciding the future of The Suicide Squad on the big or small screen, so only time will tell where things ultimately go from here.
