THE FLASH Season 3 Will Involve Psychological Warfare, But Will Have A Lighter Tone

Acknowledging how dark the latter half of season 2 became, executive producers Todd and Aaron Helbing promise a lighter tone for season 3 of The Flash while teasing the show's two new villains...

As if the altered Flashpoint timeline wasn't enough, season 3 of The Flash will introduce a third villainous speedster for Barry to face off with; this time it's the "speed god", Savitar (who was yet to be cast). A lot of Flash fans groaned over yet another speedster acting as the big bad of the season, but executive producer Aaron Helbing promises a much different villain this time around. “[Season 3] is more about psychological warfare,” Helbing teased. "Everything about [Savitar] is different than Zoom or Reverse-Flash,” executive producer Todd Helbing adds. “I can’t go into too much detail, but he’s quite a bit different.”

In addition to Savitar, Barry will also have to contend with a second villain, Dr. Alchemy, who will be voiced by Tobin Bell of the Saw franchise. “[We’re] trying to have the powers that they both possess play off of each other,” Todd explained. “It’s not just, ‘Oh, I have to catch this guy and take him down.’ It’s like, ‘Crap, now there’s this other guy, Dr. Alchemy,’ who has these transmutation qualities [via] this Philosopher’s Stone. You start to learn what he does with this stuff and how the both of them are coexisting.”

The brothers admitted that the second season of the show found itself treading down a darker path, especially in the latter half of the season, when Zoom murdered Henry Allen in front of Barry. “[The] last five [or] six episodes [of season two] were pretty dark,” acknowledged Todd. “Zoom, in general, was dark,  it even got darker than we probably anticipated. So we’re making a conscious effort to go back more toward the tone of season one.”

This season really needs to prove itself. It was really disappointing for season 2 to retread the same path of season 1 in a different way.

I get why they did what they did, but for Barry to have another mentor figure reveal themselves as a villain and betray him was just too much of a head shake for me.

That being said, Zoom was a pretty good villain when he was actually there, the fan service and respect for the source material (as usual) was on point, and the King Shark episode was awesome. Oh, and Tom f*cking Cavanagh.

@MattBellissimo -

TOm Cavanagh always comes across as likeable, whether it was when I occasionally watch ED, Scrubs, heck I even watched the terrible Yogi Bear Movie and he was awesome in it.

Also just seen that he is 52, must take care of himself.

While I enjoy Flash and really like it, it still feels like something is missing.

For me:
1)DareDevil
2)Jesicca Jones
3) Flash

No longer watch AOS, Arrow, Gotham or Supergirl (might give it another go).
Haven't seen Preacher yet.

(Obligatory hot pic of Candice Patton)

@SimplyAz - There's a difference in tone, production, etc etc. You have to consider the network too, and its demographic. The Flash has been the perfect blend of CW teen drama and comic-respecting superhero show.

@MattBellissimo -

Yeah that's cool. At the end of the day it's down to personal taste and what resonates with you.
One thing I always try and tell people on this site is, it's okay to like something that someone else dislikes or vice versa as it's down to personal preference.

While Flash is cheesy sometimes, it seems to keep it on the right side of the line and I do like it.

@SimplyAz - Seriously good outlook, bud.

A lot of people tend to forget these shows aren't just made for comic fans. We don't exist in a bubble and these shows appeal to others outside of us. There are certain things you're going to get on the CW as part of the show, and soapy-esque teen drama is one of them.

@Kevwebsz -

Cool dude, definitely will check it out but I always save online shows until most shows that I watch on TV are on breaks as I pay for a monthly subscription to Sky.

@SimplyAz - Don't watch Preacher. It's over rated. Took the whole season for it to pick up steam.

Will check it out, seen some people have the same complaint as you but hopefully season 2 will be more to your liking or maybe the show just isn't for you.

@SimplyAz - Probably true. Love the comics though.

This show has it all. Up and coming superhero shows should take a page out of The Flash and stick more to the comics
