SPOILERS: Liam Cunningham On The Horrific Events Of Last Night's GAME OF THRONES

Liam Cunningham plays Davos on HBO's Game Of Thrones, and though his character wasn't directly involved in the disturbing scenes from last night's episode, he is most definitely going to be emotionally affected by them. Find out what the Irish actor had to say after the jump...

It seems as if someone is always complaining that Game Of Thrones has "gone too far" for whatever reason, but last night's penultimate season 5 episode really was hard to stomach. In fact, it was probably the most disturbing, heartbreaking moment of the show's entire run so far - and yes, that includes the Red Wedding.

Liam Cunningham and Kerry Ingram in “Game of Thrones.”

Convinced by Melisandre that the only way he'll defeat his enemies and sit on the Iron Thrones is by offering up a king's blood sacrifice to the Red God, Stannis Baratheon does the unimaginable and burns his own daughter alive. In a world populated by some very bad people, Shireen (Kerry Ingram) was a genuine ray of light, and to see (well, hear) her suffer and die like that was devastating.

One man who's going to be profoundly affected by her loss is Davos Seaworth, who loved the greyscale-afflicted child like a daughter. Actor Liam Cunningham sat down with the New York Times to talk about the scene and how he feels about it.

"It did hurt," he admits. "I love working with Kerry. So it’s an awful loss, both professionally and personally." Some fans wondered why, since he clearly seemed to suspect that Shireen might have been in danger, Davos didn't employ some of his old smuggler tricks to get the girl away from the camp.

"His loyalty and decency gets him in trouble again. He wanted to take the queen and the princess away because a battle was about to ensue. So he is quite confused about it. Stannis is getting him out of the way because he knows he’s about to do the wrong thing. He doesn’t want to be looking in Davos’s eyes when he tries to do it, because he won’t be able to go through with it. I do not find out what actually happens to Shireen until the final episode."

So Davos will indeed discover Shireen's awful fate during next weeks season finale. How do you think he'll react? Surely he won't still remain loyal to Stannis... or perhaps he'll lay the blame entirely at the feet of Melisandre? Let us know your predictions in the usual place.

Shireen burning was the right thing to happen narratively, but it should've been Melisandre and Selyse going behind Stannis' back. Well, that's how it's going to play out in the books at least.

Her screams were heart wrenching. She was the last of the innocents on Got. May the Lord of Light rest her soul!

Is that confirmed? But yeah I agree it makes more sense. Stannis is a fanatic and is clearly being influenced by melisandre, but I just don't believe he'd do that to his own daughter.

I hope Davos

a) stabs Stannis the gosh darn eye!

b) finally says, "f- you, bro," and abandons Stannis to go chill with Jon at the Wall.

Davos is one of my favorite characters.

@RorMachine It's teased out in the books, especially with "for the watch" happening and Melisandre going to need King's blood to revive her new "Azor Ahai".

I'm not sure what the plans are for Stannis, but I suspect he will never again have the sympathies of large parts of the audience. Him agreeing to this... [frick] Stannis! >:(

I dunno, I'm conflicted about this. Book Stannis literally ordered his men to do everything they could to help Shireen take the Iron Throne should he die. He's obsessed with his lineage and who has the "right" to the Iron Throne. I get that he probably figures he can just have another child to continue his line in the show, but that seems to cold, even for show Stannis.

Either way, I didn't like this episode as much as Hardhome. Selyse's sudden turnaround about Shireen's fate didn't land properly because she was literally telling Stannis that he had to burn his daughter up until the very last second. Her sudden change of heart like that didn't come across like a cold-hearted queen suddenly having her motherly instincts come out...it came across like she's insane. Which, okay, she just might be haha.

And the whole reason for Stannis' predicament was Ramsay sneaking into camp and burning some tents and horses. The fact that it just happens out of the blue (with such minimal set-up in the last episode) makes it feel so contrived. Compare that to the book, where it shows how dire Stannis' situation is because of the months-long blizzard and dwindling supplies and dying soldiers.

A lot of this is because I read the books and can't help but compare them, true, but even if I hadn't read them I feel I still wouldn't have been impressed with this episode. Though the scene with Shireen was probably one of the most heart-wrenching scenes I've ever seen on this show, with the exception of the Red Wedding.

No way I can ever root for Stannis now.

@AlexanderLykins Quiet, adults are talking.

I kid. I kid.

But go back and watch the show if you want to talk about it intelligently.

Davos has to kill that [frick]ing Red Bitch, and maybe Stannis as well. If not I hope Ramsay manages to kill Stannis, and then Sansa can kill Ramsay and Brienne can kill Roose Bolton. Or something like that.

Stannis Baratheon actually beat Ramsay Bolton and Cersei Lannister as the most hated character on the show. I would not think that was possible after 1 show.

"Davos has to kill that [frick]ing Red Bitch, and maybe Stannis as well. If not I hope Ramsay manages to kill Stannis, and then Sansa can kill Ramsay and Brienne can kill Roose Bolton. Or something like that."

That all sounds terrific, but also sounds like the kind of stuff that happens on other shows.

By now my interest in a battle for Winterfell has all but vanished. First priority: Davos must survive. Second priority: Sansa must survive. Aside from those two everyone elese involved in 'Stannis vs The Boltons' can just die for all I care.

Okay, Roose's pregnant wife probably shouldn't get slaughtered. :/

@Kyos,

By now my interest in most aspects of the show has vanished. Even when "bad" characters get their comeuppance, I am pretty apathetic about it anymore.

Since they are going way off the books, here's a shot in the dark about whats to come,

Stannis loses at Winterfell and gets captured by Ramsay who skins him alive. Melisandre escapes and returns to the Wall, where her resurrection magic is going to come in handy soon.

Davos takes whats left of Stannis's fleet and sails for Dragonstone Island. Along the way he finds a shipwreck survivor who was returning from Skaggos Island. He had dropped off Rickon Stark and Osha there.

Daenerys does some contemplating and then releases the other 2 dragons from their lair. She then orders her army the Unsullied to evacuate the city, at which point she riding Drogon along with Viserion, and Rhaegal burn Meereen to the ground. Since the show is ending with season 7, all of season six can be about her building her strength and letting her dragons become full grown to conquer Westeros. Also save the day by killing the white-walkers.

Cersi does the walk of atonement, then chose's trial by combat at which point Ser Robert The Strong appears to be her champion.

SPOILERS blah blah blah

I'm betting this season is gonna end with Jon Snow getting stabbed on a cliffhanger just like the book. I'm gonna have to wait a whole year to know if he dies or not. I'm really hoping they don't kill him. He's like 70% of why I watch the show.
