CBS Access has announced (Via EW) that both Doug Jones (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) and Anthony Rapp (Rent, Junction) have joined the cast of Star Trek: Discovery. Jones will play "Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer and a new alien species to the Star Trek universe," while Rapp has been cast as astromycologist, fungus expert, and Starfleet Science Officer Lt. Stamets, who will be the franchise's first originally conceived gay character.

During Star Trek Beyond it was revealed that Sulu was gay, but that was a somewhat controversial alteration to the original TV version of the ship's ensign.

In addition, it's been confirmed that Michelle Yeoh will be playing Captain Georgiou, who commands the Starship Shenzhou.

Star Trek: Discovery is set to premiere in May on next year.

I know this is nothing to do with the article but can anyone help explaing the timeline of the current x-men comics?

Extraordinary X-men takes place 8months after the events of Secret Wars.

So will it be : Death of X -> X-men vs Inhumans -> Extraordinary X-men -> Resurextion then the blue and gold teams.

I assume Uncanny X-men and All New X-men take place in the Extraordinary X-men time period.

Also were does the Civil War II based on the X-mens perepctive take place ?

@StormXmen123 - Secret Wars -> Death of X -> Extraordinary X-Men/All-New X-Men/Uncanny X-Men -> Civil War II: X-Men -> X-Men vs. Inhumans -> Resurextion -> X-Men: Blue/Gold

EXM, ANX, and UXM continue through Civil War II, X-Men vs. Inhumans and presumably up to Resurextion

What is an astromycologist fungus expert? I mean was there any character from the franchise that closely resembles that? I mean it sounds like a botanist. I don't remember any main characters from past shows being botanists if that's what astromycologist fungus expert is except for Chief O'Brien's wife from DS9 (my fav Trek series BTW) who wasn't a main character and I think Kes from Voyager was as well. As for the series itself I can't see my self liking it more than any of the previous shows except for maybe Enterprise which I only liked in its last 2 seasons. Personally I'm more excited to see the follow up to Beyond which will have Kirk meet his father played by Chris Hewsworth. Captain Kirk and Thor joining forces sounds more interesting that what's happening here.

Just when I thought Doug Jones would be cast in a role that wouldn't cover himself in makeup.

Yah, George Takai is upset that the new Sulu is gay, and that it wasn't Gene's idea of how it should be. I counter that with Sulu running through the decks with a epee.
