AGATHA: DARKHOLD DIARIES Star Kathryn Hahn Reveals How Much Longer WANDAVISION Spin-Off Will Be Shooting For

Talking on the red carpet during last night's Emmy Awards, WandaVision star Kathryn Hahn shared an update on where things stand with Marvel Studios and Disney+'s upcoming spin-off Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.

Kathryn Hahn's Agatha Harkness stole the show in WandaVision, but does she really need her own series? Only time will tell on that front but Agatha: Darkhold Diaries (that's the current title, anyway) is expected to expand the MCU's magical side and even introduce the Scarlet Witch's now-teenage son, Wiccan.

The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Hahn at the Emmys yesterday evening and asked for an update on the show.

"We just have a few more days to pick up, yeah," the actress said, confirming principal photography is close to wrapping. "We've got most of it done. It's very exciting."

Asked to share her excitement for the Disney+ series, Hahn added: "Marvel fans and just anyone who loves a witch [Laughs]...I can't wait for people to see it. Who wouldn't want to play a witch? That's all I played as a kid, every Halloween."

Whether Agatha will go from villain to anti-hero across the course of her series remains to be seen, though it seems likely. If nothing else, we're expecting the show to set the stage for the Scarlet Witch's eventual return, all while potentially adding another key hero or two to the Young Avengers roster.

Ironheart, a series which appears to have slipped into 2025 despite wrapping in 2022, is expected to feature Mephisto, a villain we may well meet for the first time in Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. If various scoopers are to be believed, he'll be played by Sacha Baron Cohen.

"The character is so deep and heartfelt and dangerous," the show's co-executive producer, Mary Livanos, said in a featurette released last year. "Continuing the story of Agatha and getting to know her more was immediately an imperative for us as creatives."

This show will feature the return of many familiar faces from WandaVision, including Emma Caulfield Ford (Sarah Proctor), Debra Jo Rupp (Sharon Davis), David Payton (John Collins), David Lengel (Harold Proctor), Asif Ali (Abilash Tandon), Amos Glick (Dennis), Brian Brightman (Sheriff Miller), and Kate Forbes (Evanora Harkness).

Kathryn Hahn will lead the cast, of course, while other noteworthy additions include Aubrey Plaza, Joe Locke, Patti LuPone, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Okwui Okpokwasili, and Maria Dizzia.

Agatha: Darkhold Diaries is set to premiere on Disney+ later this year.

Great News. What makes Marvel Studios so successful is they a large Variety of shows for their Audiences. Not just the Cookie Cutter Man in a Cape movies. Like DC's Superman and Batman except for fans the audiences have grown bored.

@AllsGood - Did you hear no She-Hulk Season 2 and Star Wars:Rey 4 is going to be delayed because it's lost a writer.

Good news don't you think?

I'm not excited about this and I don't get the point of this show while fans has been asking for characters like Nova.

@Alucard28 - Many characters have a fanbase and get folk having their own personal priority list but TBH the first GotG kinda messed up doing Nova and then offscreen destroying Xandar in Infinity War made it even tougher to find a way to fast track that one. I do entirely get folk desperately wanting him introduced properly, esp amongst those over 40, even if not that often he gets on top 100 list I've seen doing the rounds.

At this point think more likely it will be on another timeline not the prime one now. There was an optimal window I feel for prime Earth Nova as an aftermath of IW they missed what with the 5yr time jump and not being a project prioritised for phase four. All the delays and everything feel if they go with it now it will likely be setting up for joining Earth prime AFTER Secret Wars and anything prior if they still go there with it of him setup being an otherverse story (Maybe in the Xmen timeline for instance).

The point of this was likely always less about Agatha herself and more about trying to introducin Wiccan fully (and at least pave the way to do so with Speed too) which without HUGE changes to the source, WAY more than they already did...

It was always likely to take a second series following directly on from WandaVision to do justice to, unless going lazy route with the multiverse, and I've tended to percieve a higher popularity for Wiccan and Speed amongst younger demographics (15 through 30) than for Nova.

Wiccan was one of the founding members (bringing with him a second of the first four) of the Young Avengers and the first one to have an intro in the MCU, if they are going ahead with that would we realy want him bypassed entirely? I mean for the source order need White Vision back, Iron Lad, Patriot, Wiccan and Hulkling before adding Kate and Cassie or anyone else so...

...pieces are in place for most the source Young Avengers (inc Eli and Kang with later additions like Kid Loki and Speed already had intro's too) but need work to get their yet that films couldn't do as good of a job with as series' would.

As I have repeatedly said, I get not being interested in stuff and having differing priorities but setting up a next generation of Avengers ready to have a bigger role after Secret Wars makes sense to do at this stage. Skipping the stuff your not interested in is always an option and get wanting a total reboot to originals and NEVER doing any newer characters but...

...remains to be seen with this and other future projects (film or TV) what will be good or not and if the franchise does keep going for another decade or more but if it does we wouldn't want all the avengers being north of 60yrs old when not all character are supposed to have slow ageing. At some point gonna need younger ones come along and prepped for joining in at least for supporting roles.

I feel like this show is the most un-needed series for Marvel. If it doesn’t reintroduce the twins to get them ready for young avengers then it’s useless.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/16/2024, 9:52 AM
@slickrickdesigns - Well that exact thing was the first and most enduring rumor for the entire show that it would at minimum intro the true/reincarnated Wiccan (and likely also Hulkling) although Speed was said to be be initialy intended to be reintroduced in Vision Quest. I mean all the early rumors stated the entire storyline basicaly revolved around Wiccan, even if Agatha is the titular lead who would likely end up protecting him from other witches wanting to drain his powers before he was able to master them.

All these comments are the same people who want 15 more Superman, Batman, Wolverine-centric X-Men movies and Iron Man movies. People want something different. Get over it and don't watch!
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/16/2024, 10:56 AM
@SolarSoldier - I mean I always want stuff to be GOOD but I am a case of would rather have studios take risks trying new things than just constant reboots and rehashing the same few characters all the time. Yeh, for various reasons things didn't land well but after the increasing 'formula' complaints towards the end of Infinity Sage we got a bunch of stuff trying to break from that in tone and structure which even if they fail to deliver there should at least be some recognition and appreciation for trying different things in differing styles for differing corners of the market.

@SolarSoldier - I mean, why would want to watch films/shows with popular characters, that's crazy!

Marvel have a massive roster of far more interesting characters they could've used but we get this, lucky us

Agatha, the strongest character introduced in the MCU yet!
MarvelZombie616
MarvelZombie616 - 1/16/2024, 5:20 PM
While i liked her in Wanda/Vision, she is awkward in the interview and the character is only relevant as Franklin Richards babysitter.
I am a real marvel comics zombie, but Agatha Harkness is a e-list character with almost no great stories to her.
The witch stuff was okay 40 years ago, but hasn't been great since Supernatural.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/17/2024, 4:37 AM
@MarvelZombie616 - For starters Supernatural was still going in 2005 which kinda insta undermines the 40 yrs ago comment but think you simply haven't watched a lot of witch related content as still good stuff being made. Heck Buffy only ended 20yrs ago if including one that included witches but the lead character is not but of the shows that was Witch centric or heavily featured Witches rated as good or better than Buffy since

The midniht Club 2022
The Vampire Diaries 2009
American Horror Story 2013
Archive 81 2022
A Discovery of Witches 2018
Grimm 2011
Penny Dreadfull 2014
The Magicians 2015
WandaVision 2021

The Owl House 2020
The Order 2019
His Dark Materials 2019
The Wheel of Time 2021
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina 2018
Salem 2014

I mean if talking GOOD witch related TV shows can only think of a few before the likes of Buffy, Supernatural and Grimm I ever got into and we all enjoyed Penny Dreadfull, A Discovery of Witches and WandaVision a lot. I didn't get into Vampire Diaries or American Horror Story but my wife and oldest daughter did, never watched Chilling adventures or His Dark Materials yet but my oldest daughter loved those too.

Best Witch related films since Supernatural that could easily make it into a top 30 of all Witch related films

The Witch 2016
Season of the Witch 2011
The Love Witch 2016
Witching and Bitching 2013
Stardust 2007
Suspiria 2018
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe 2005
Gretel & Hansel 2020
Into the Woods 2014

Maleficent 2014
I am not a Witch 2017
Bewitched 2005
The Autopsy of Jane Doe 2016
Mary and The Witch’s Flower 2017
The Conjuring 2017
Earwig and the Witch 2020
Drag me to Hell 2009
The Skeleten key 2005
The House of the Devil 2009
The Last Witch Hunter 2015

All of those feature on various top 30 all time Witch films lists without even including any Potterverse related (and a fair few of those I listed would be in my top 10 witch films I've seen over the last 50yrs, in fact over half my top ten would likely be since 2000)

So yeh, there has been a TON of not good aimed for teen Witch stuff on streaming services and TV which skew perceptions of the subgenre the last couple decades but look past a long list of those still ample good to great stuff out there.

Radders - 1/17/2024, 8:57 AM
@Apophis71 - I would probably disagree that many of those could be called good, let alone better than Buffy but they do exist

Witch stuff if done well can be great but its a tricky one to get right
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/17/2024, 9:26 AM
@Radders - Oh I agree and would say way more bad than good has been released, also don't personaly class all those as good or better than Buffy but was trying to pool list orders and review scores in the most general way possible sans personal bias, lol.

However more the point from what I've have seen there was a big uptick in the number of varied Witch related stuff being released post Buffy, obviously that would include an uptick in the bad too but...

...the more interesting thing for me is when done well a vast increase in three dimensional and/or nuanced approaches to witches and the craft not just the old stereotype one dimensional villains you mostly got prior outside of stuff like the Bewitched series and original series of Sabrina (neither of which I personaly thought of as that good even if they had their fans).

Does that timeline include the time it will take to re-shoot the entire show? We know it's going to happen lol
