AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 6 First Look Reveals The Team's New Director

A new official image from season six of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been released, and it reveals who will be leading the team in what will presumably be Agent Coulson's absence after his apparent demise.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. won't return until next summer but filming is already underway, and TV Line has now shared a first look at the new Director: Alphonso "Mack" Mackenzie (Henry Simmons).

As you'll no doubt recall, season five ended with the ailing Phil Coulson preparing to meet his maker and while his future in the series is something of a mystery, we were left to assume that he died in Tahiti and the remaining S.H.I.E.L.D. agents will have to continue on without him.

"Personally, I love the challenge of being the director of S.H.I.E.L.D.," Simmons tells the site. "Mack has worked side-by-side with the people he now leads, and that works to his advantage — he’s one of them. But the one thing that can hinder Mack’s ability to lead is his reluctance to put the people he loves in the line of danger."

"As a result, this may lead to Mack’s toughest decision as director. What sacrifices will be made?"

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is coming back for a shortened 13-episode season and it's already been renewed for a 13-episode seventh season so there's clearly plenty of stories left to tell, Coulson or no Coulson!

@Goldboink - Pretty sure Shield is still disbanded in the movies...

@Himura - Tony Stark is running around in a SHIELD shirt in shots from Avengers4. Methinks there will be a rehabilitation.

I am still absolutely stunned by this. For me, maybe even the biggest TV related news, just in terms of how unexpected. I mean they got the 13ep season 6 order baaaaaaaaaarely by the skin of their teeth, and I had no problem with them wrapping it up like that. Even wanted it. And frankly, usually when a show gets to a fourth or more season, they take a WAY EXTRA LONG amount of time for the greenlight to be given by the studio once more, except it's suddenly for a much shorter run -- I mean c'mon, we're all pretty TV-savvy here. You look at those factors, you say it's a mortal lock that'll definitely be the final season of the show.
Then whammo, not even close to when that run starts airing, they go ahead and give them yet another season.

@CaptCoulson - I'm sure this has to do with syndication rights and maximizing profit potential.

Season 6 and 7 combine to make 26 episodes, or three more than the full season orders the show had been getting.

The seasons are shooting back to back, despite being released a year apart, so ABC is also saving on production costs.

This will be the actual END of the show, and it will have 7 seasons to sell into syndication -- and I'm positive it will find its way onto Disney Plus as well, which gives the service 7 seasons worth of Marvel-branded content.

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - oh that's right. just that what with how so much about television has been completely revolutionized over the last decade, I realize I don't have the (old fashioned?) syndication thing I go to right away in my head.

Good luck Mack. I get the feeling the writers will put you through the wringer.

Eh. I don’t see him as being the choice that makes sense I would have gone with either May or Daisy

Glad they landed on Mack as the new director. I like Daisy and she's great as the teams powerhouse, but she really doesn't show much leadership capabilities, especially given how many times she's run away ditched the team about every other season.

It makes sense, he always kept the most cool and level-headed behaviour all the way since S3 when Coulson left him in charge.
