Marvel's long-running
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will premiere its sixth season sometime in May, shortly after the release of
Avengers: Endgame. While much of the season is shrouded in mystery, we do know that there will be a time-jump from the end of Season 5. The series will take place in a post-Phil Coulson world, with half of the team under the supervision of Director Mack on Earth and the other half in deep space searching for cryo Fitz.
It was revealed last year that Clark Gregg, in addition to portraying Not-Phil Coulson, would be directing the season premiere 'Missing Pieces,' and that VFX supervisor Mark Kolpack and exectuvie producer Garry Brown would also be jumping behind the camera to direct. Now, thanks to
EW, we know that the upcoming season will host another notable figure behind the camera: veteran actor and director
Lou Diamond Philips.
Philips (
Young Guns, Longmire) will direct the fifth episode this season. He told EW the following during a S.H.I.E.L.D. set visit in September:
I got the call when I was directing Fear of the Walking Dead down in Austin: ‘Would you direct an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?’ ‘Yeah, done.’ Instant answer, because of the world, because it’s Marvel. It’s big. It’s comic-book stuff. It’s action. It’s mythology. It’s science-fiction. It’s all of that rolled into one. And of course my old friend Ming-Na was on it. That’s crazy, that’s wonderful!
As the actor notes, Philips will reunite with fellow
Stargate Universe co-star Ming-Na Wen. and his excitement for this reuninon was matched by the Agent May actress, who revealed to EW how happy she was to work with her friend again.
When they told me he was directing, I was just so happy. We had so much fun [on Stargate]. That was a very special two years for us up in Vancouver — for me, Lou, and the whole entire crew.
EW also released an exclusive image that provides a new look at the main cast of season 6.
There are a few intriguing details in the image: Not-Phil Couslon is keeping his distance from May, Director Mack is holding Fury's toolbox, the team is playing some kind of Poker-like game on a table with symbols that look Kree-like, and there is an interesting sword secured to the front of said table. And, of course, Deke is stealing the game chips.
Be sure to tune into new
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this May.
