How AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. And CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Can Crossover

While Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is Marvel Television's first live action endeavor, it has had very little impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe's overall plot. How can the show have higher relevancy? Hit the jump and see for yourself!

While some still haven't warmed up to it, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has become my personal favorite show in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far. Every day I anxiously await the announcement of season two's DVD release date, which must be happening soon. Similarly, Captain America is my favorite superhero, so the idea of another crossover happening with Civil War ala The Winter Soldier does nothing but excite me.

Both seasons have their own unique flavor to them, and season three will be no exception. Season one introduced us to the system of S.H.I.E.L.D.

we were used to from the films, only then to fall and be destroyed completely. Season two was S.H.I.E.L.D. the rebuilding of this organization, but as outlaws; while they were high-tech vigilantes, they were vigilantes all the same. For the show to work, we must continue to see this organization grow, to "rebuild," which is a slow-but-sure process. A step in the right direction for this is for them to make peace with the U.S. government once again.

If I'm not mistaken, S.H.I.E.L.D. was a United Nations service, not strictly United States. That's all well and good, but this reconstruction will take time, and won't be the same institute it was before. The team has spent a considerable amount of time being chased by General Talbot, but has since come to an alliance of sorts with him and the Air Force. Now it's time to get back on the President's happy-list. What I'm proposing is a meeting between President Ellis, Director Coulson, and Nick Fury.

If you've read my previous AoS editorial, you'll know I'd love to see the Ten Rings be the big-bads of this season, and S.H.I.E.L.D. becoming aware of this terrorist threat would give a nice reason to meet with the President. But whatever the initial cause is, Nick Fury reveals himself to be alive to Ellis, and that he's appointed Coulson the director. As a sign of good faith, Coulson lets President Ellis know that he can task the agents with missions himself, and could even let them join the F.B.I. and C.I.A. as good "double agents." The President agrees, and S.H.I.E.L.D. is still a secret underground agency, but one under the government's watch and support.

This would be an earlier episode in the season, to establish S.H.I.E.L.D.'s growth. I believe we could actually see the President on this show because William Sadler, the actor who portrays him, has done work on television, most recently in one of The Flash's earlier episodes. This meeting also sets the stage for my Civil War crossover idea.

Captain America: Civil War's official synopsis is as follows:

Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

To me, this is slightly concerning. Whether you like it or not, Civil War is arguably the biggest story Marvel published, affecting every single character in that world. When it was announced that this story was being adapted for Cap 3, it raised concerns as some felt it shouldn't be confined to a solo movie. I soon warmed up to the idea, but the synopsis makes it seem as if it isn't dealing with superheroes as a whole, but specifically The Avengers. And Civil War is so much bigger than that.

Kevin Feige has said that the Superhuman Registration Act won't be about secret identities as much as who these people report to. That makes sense for The Avengers, but in my opinion this needs to include all superheroes. The new Inhumans, the Netflix heroes; at least most of the superheroes who have been introduced. Now obviously, this still needs to be Cap's story, and there's only so many characters you can shove in one movie. And as always, ol' GliderMan has the solution.

I'm not sure which CBM user came up with this idea, for I read it in the comment section long ago. It was essentially taking a scene that worked well in The Winter Soldier and working it into Civil War. In Cap 2, Steve Rogers announces of the Triskelion's intercom that Alexander Pierce and the S.T.R.I.K.E. team are Hydra. While he's talking, we see S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra agents fighting one another. This can all be worked around to suit the movie, but basically you would have a character once again making an epic speech (hell, let Baron Zemo make the speech, it'd be a sweet parallel), while we see numerous heroes either fighting each other or fighting the authorities.

And here we get to the crossover, and this is a way I think would work well for both hardcore fans and members of the general audience. We see Adrianne Palicki's Mockingbird burst in with F.B.I. agents to take Daredevil into custody, who has been running from the police. They fight each other. Agent Skye fights Jessica Jones, or to make it really interesting, maybe she fights against her fellow agents. A suited-up Deathlok chases after Luke Cage, or perhaps Cage is on their side. There's all sorts of possibilities, and while the scene would probably only be a few seconds long, it'd give the fans something very special.

So what do you think, CBM? Is this crossover something you'd like to see, or is it completely unnecessary? Let me know your thoughts and ideas in the comment section!

That sounds pretty awesome. It would be a great compliment for the TV shows. As far as I know, in comics it was the new Warriors's screw up leading to Civil War. Let it be Secret Warriors on MCU. That could be one of the events that contributes to Civil War.

Now put Ward into play somehow. He is one of the few who thrives in all this. Maybe releasing the top Hydra leaders.....and Wisk along with them?

So a bit like "Execute order 66" montage from the SW prequels? I imagine that could work well enough even for those moviegoers who'd have no real idea who any of these characters were. Not that I'm bating breath, I've given up on AoS having any real overlap with the films of MCU (and managing all the additional actor contracts would be a nightmare). I just hope AoS is allowed to build its own (parallel, independent) storyline towards the civil war already well before the film premiere.

Ceterum censeo, I wish Agent Koenig had been shown on board of Fury's helicarrier in AoU. That would have been a perfect (and non-intrusive) little nod to AoS.

That would be pretty sweet, and rather easy to do!

Yup, that's exactly what I've been saying. Should've been very little additional effort to get Oswalt on the set (heck, or even just shoot something on the TV set and cut him into the movie), and it would have been immensly satisfying for the AoS fans to just see a Koenig brother in the background on the helicarrier. Everyone one else wouldn't even have noticed it or wondered why the [frick] there was a random Patton Oswalt cameo.

There will clearly be crossover, but hopefully not what you're asking for. Face it, so far in the MCU the Avengers are the main group of heroes. There are no X-Men or Fantastic 4 or others yet. If Inhumans are part of it, it will only be shown on the TV show. I guess there might be a small chance of seeing Quake and Coulson in the movie in cameos. Maybe Mockingbird too with her past relationship with Hawkeye. But Jessica Jones will barely even be on Netflix by then, and I just have no desire to see Daredevil in the movie, and I don't see them doing that, although they could make the Civil War a plot point in his second season. That is how I see them always connecting TV to the MCU, having events from movies sometimes affect the TV shows, but not having TV characters in movies (with the possible exception of some Inhumans, like Quake, appearing in both when that movie comes out.)
