S.H.I.E.L.D./HYDRA Speculation

I speculate on how the events of Captain America: TWS, which shook the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will play out within the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series and future Marvel projects. Expect spoilers ahead.

After the reveal that HYDRA has infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D. throughout the last 70 years, many past exploites of S.H.I.E.L.D. in MCU take on a new light and leaves lots of room for speculation for the future.

Tesseract research
In The Avengers, it is shown that S.H.I.E.L.D. had been researching the Tesseract to make weapons, much like HYDRA had in the first Captain America movie, even going as far as collecting WW2 HYDRA weapons. However what if there was more to the research, (which itself is potentionally bad enough) as no one seems to question why the device that S.H.I.E.L.D. built seems to make a better portal platform than any form of energy collection. They knew the device created a doorway to another part of the universe but maybe they didnt expect the bring Loki through it maybe they were trying to bring leader back through, the Red Skull.

Slingshot
In the TV show, it was revealed that when S.H.I.E.L.D. find technologies too degerous to keep they would be disposed at the Slingshot facility by being shot into the sun. However, it now seems more likely that this was a ploy by HYDRA to smuggle out dangerous tech to their own research facilities around the world, and this might explain how Baron Von Strucker obtained Loki's staff.

US government
 What alot of people are forgetting is that not only S.H.I.E.L.D. that was infiltrated but also positions within the US Government and who knows where else. Senertor Stern's reveal adds more layers to Iron Man 2 plot and most likely explain how S.H.I.E.L.D. got into the position of having a seemingly unending budget. What if high levels of the military have also been got at by HYDRA, I some how dont see Emil Blonsky being held under lock and key much longer.

Anyway thats a few of the little thoughts that ran through my head today, but what do you guys think, am I being paranoid? Sound of below.

Hail HYDRA!

Good article! The MCU is starting to remind me of some of the comics I've read with all these suprises coming out. I do like your speculation about the tesseract project was about bringing the Red skull back. I just wonder did Kevin plan all this ahead of time. I just can't wait to see what's next.

yeah i also like the idea about the red skull. they where trying to open the door but then the door was opened from the other side. i cant wait to see what will happen in avengers 2, i also hope we see abomination again at some point.

No I think all of these started happening while they were filming the Avengers. I'm pretty sure Kevin had ideas of where to go after Avengers but didn't really have a plot until post production. Joss and Kevin were probably throwing ideas around of where to really take the franchise. During post they probably agreed to go genre with phase 2 and to make it more personal. From that point on Kevin has been planning ahead. Every Phase is a risk. They have to prove themselves as well as the world they can produce solid films in a synergetic universe. Phase 1 was kind of a lets see if this works. Phase 2 is we know this works now but let's do it better and different. They clearly are still learning how to find the balance of how to use the connective tissue. Getting better but still haven't nailed it. Hopefully next phase will be perfect.

@Kinghulk that's what I want in The Incredible Hulk sequel for him to fight The Leader and The Abomination before a Planet hulk film also hawkeye should be in it like the A:Emh gamma world episodes.

And I agree with the corrupt goverment and Hydras infiltration. Why else would the Vice President so easily helped AIM and Killian to kidnap the POTUS. Also, now we know why SHIELD was nowhere to be found to help Tony. Explains a lot. I know his daughters missing legs was a motive, but that PLUS him being affiliated with Hydra makes more sense.

MCUfan1- i dont want to see a planet hulk film yet atleast but i would love to see hawkeye team up with hulk like in the gamma world episodes.

These are all strong points, but your first one is fantastic!

I never really thought of that, but it makes perfect sense. Maybe they WERE trying to bring back Red Skull!

Ok who am I kidding. There is no giving it good to my wife. I might as well say Hail Hydra at the beginning, because it will all be over by the time I finish saying it. Not exactly Captain America here, ya know?

I want to know why Thor left the staff on Earth. He knows SHIELD was trying to weaponize advanced technology. Unless.........it is another infinity stone and he left it there on purpose to keep it away from the others. Maybe he was fooled into thinking it would be safer with SHIELD/Hydra.

The thing I find weird is if Zola was able to make weapons with the Tesseract during WW2. Why wasn't he able to repeat the process when he was brought over after the war since Howard Stark found the Tesseract and has been with SHIELD since.

Good stuff, bud. I honestly never considered the Red Skull angle before.

I'm interested in how the info from the flash drive is going affect things in the future. I mean, those files were shot to all corners of the internet.. Natasha's secrets are just the beginning- there's a lot more that's gonna come back to bite 'em on the arse.

Anyway, thumbs up.

brocksamson33- zola could have died before stark retrieved the tesseract. there was a date for his death but i cant remember what it was.

WYLEEJAY- Ahhhhhhhh, but you see, grasshopper.. it is not in the uttering of "hail hydra" that you find your true centre, no, no, NO!! It is more than just the verbal power- it is the INTERNAL power as well. Y'see, concentrate on the phrase "hail Hydra".. meditate on it's importance as you, ahem.. well, you know. Hold on to every syllable for as long as you can- streeeeeeeeeeeetch it out for maximum impact, and pace yourself accordingly. Where your mind goes, your body shall follow. Speed will come in due time. Before you know it- an hour's passed. Eat your f*cking heart out, Rogers.

Thus endeth the lesson.

I almost feel like I did during Secret Invasion. "Who Can You Trust?"

Its like Secret Invasion, but with Hydra instead of Skrulls.

Somthing you have to Question though, which is how the hell would Hydra Know that the tesseract teleported the Red Skull? Teh only person who witnessed/knows about it was Captain America. for all they know Red Skulls could have fell out of the Bomber during the last fight and his body was never found. how could they know?

@Marvel1997

That's a good point. That information would have no way of being out there until at least Cap was discovered. And even if he didn't report on it (which he most likely did, and thus Zola etc have access), they might be able to get some clues off the plane.

The only OTHER way for them to know is if Red Skull is out there somewhere, and was able to get word back to the Hydra agents on Earth.
DellRusk
DellRusk - 4/9/2014, 2:52 PM
@kinghulk

Zola died in the 70s. Howard retrieved the Tesseract in the 40s when they were looking for Cap's crashed ship. Zola was working for SHIELD when they had the Tesseract.
Lhornbk
Lhornbk - 4/9/2014, 2:57 PM
Actually, I disagree with the Tesseract idea, for one simple reason. It was Fury who started that project, and Coulson and Hill and Hawkeye were helping keep an eye on it, and none of them are Hydra (well, I assume Hawkeye isn't.) Plus, how would any of the Hydra members know that the cube was what killed Red Skull (or teleported him to another dimension?) All Cap told anyone when he radioed from the plane was that Red Skull was dead, he didn't tell them how it happened. (Unless he told Shield after he was found and thawed out, but I was under the impression that the Tesseract project had already been started by then.) So as far as Hydra knows, Red Skull could have been shot or thrown out of the plane or something else, but there really isn't a reason for them to think he's alive on some other world.

The other 2 seem more likely, although I would assume that the Slingshot rocket was tracked until it hit the sun, unless all the agents involved in tracking it were Hydra, in which case they could falsify the tracking records. And I strongly agree about IM 3, we now have the explanation as to why Shield didn't help the president.

@Cipher. Hmmmmm. Will have to try that. Except, we're married. So I will have to get her drunk in order for her to touch me. It never works cause I drink all the liquor faster than her. Like a damn snake eating its own tail I tell ya.

This also makes the Agent Carter show VERY interesting! If they are exploring the foundation of Shield then they can totally play that Hydra infiltration card. We will see it from the ground up!!!

@sikwon,

true...I find the Carter show incredibly interesting anyway, solely because of Carter and Stark. Totally want that show. And Dumdum would help too.

Also fully expect a crossover episode between Carter/AOS, probably for the season finales. (Yeah, I get different time periods, but it could totally work, even better than how AOS was directly affected by TWS.)

I don't like to casually use "stupid" about people, BUT...if they don't do such a thing, they are EXTREMELY stupid. Given their plan for the Defenders thing after the initial Netflix series though, I think the crossover is likely.

It would be interesting if that where the direction of each division where to take. They are intriguing theories but i would love to see more involvement of A.I.M. in the MCU.

With the way Shield went down Hydra probably has all the stuff that was kept in storage, or at least a lot of it. As one of my favorite villains (because he beat Spider-Man without a hitch in one of the first American comics I ever read) I've been constantly wondering how Dr Hall was going to break out.

Well, he probably just did. Graviton is out there boys and girls.

@Marvel1997:
They could know by researching the residual energies left on the ship and the marks it left.
