Will Someone Die Tonight On AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.?

Jeph Loeb drops some hints about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., particularly tonight's episode which he describes as a tearjerker and devastating. With a "killer on the loose" in FZZT, does someone on Agent Coulson's (Clark Gregg) team take a dirt nap?

Marvel TV Agents of SHIELD Ultimate Spider-Man

Marvel head of television Jeph Loeb spoke with Aint It Cool News about all things Marvel TV. Early in the interview, Loeb stated that tonight's episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is the best yet and hints that the show may be adopting a more serious tone. Said Loeb, "The most important thing is that the shows keep getting better and that our actors are really finding their roles. I think that when people see episode six, and by all estimations it’s the best one yet. It’s an extremely tense, frightening episode and even though some of us fans are grown men....you might get a little moist around the eyes."

While Loeb declined to answer what the rest of the season has in store for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. viewers, he does give a hint that something tragic and significant will occur on tonight's episode. "I can tell you that, at least with episode 6, there is a mysterious killer out there and no one is safe. That’s as far as I can take it but it is rather devastating if you are invested in the show."

Loeb continued, "There are some very exciting folk from the Marvel Universe proper coming in. I think folk out there already know that Agent Blake from the ‘Item 47’ short is coming in and that will be followed up by us making a visit to a SHIELD facility where there will be a few familiar faces and that Agent Sitwell will be coming in."

There's more from Loeb over at AICN, including brief discussion about AKA Jessica Jones, Guillermo del Toro's Hulk tv show (it's dead) and how long before we see the four other Marvel tv shows in development. It's all rather vague-ish, in-direct talk though so don't expect any concrete responses from Loeb. Click the link above to read the full transcript.

Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson's team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage; Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), expert pilot and martial artist; Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), brilliant engineer; and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker, Skye (Chloe Bennet).

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s first television series, is from executive producers Joss Whedon (Marvel's The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, who co-wrote the pilot (Dollhouse, Dr.Horrible's Sing-Along Blog). Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias) and Jeph Loeb (Smallville, Lost, Heroes) also serve as executive producers. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television."

Will an agent die? Will he or she go to that magical place Tahiti? Will 'Galaga Playing Guy' make an appearance on the show? So many questions.

It just takes them a while to get any traction. I reckon by episode 22 we'll be looking back at an excellent season with a shaky start. It's taken them a while to find their feet, but the good episodes so far have been very good, and I think it's only going to get better. This may just be over-optimism, but I have faith. Plenty of TV shows start off crap. The first season of Buffy was pretty dire, and look how good that got.

I don't know if it's the writing, directing, or acting -- likely a combo -- but it'd be cool if they upped their game. I'm compelled to watch, like a zombie is compelled to eat brains, right? Die-hard nerd, what can I do. But after watching-- I mean wasting years watching Smallville, we deserve a better, non-CW type show.

Kill off Fitz/Simmons and Tall guy (sorry forgot his name). Bring in Agent Clay Quartermain, Agent Jimmy Woo, and Agent Sharon Carter to take their place.

FitzSimmons are a great part of the show.
I like them. If they kill of Simmons then I will be done. She's my favourite.

This show has really been a huge let down, not living up to the expectations at all. A shame really, it had potential, but keeps continue to disappoint. Really hoping for a true masterpiece of an episode to be around the corner, if not? this series won't last long.

Arrow is also in its second season. It was just as bad, if not worse, when it started. I think the reason many shows fail is because people give up on them too quickly in the first season. When you look at most long running shows that turn out to be really successful, comparing the first season to their second is like comparing apples to oranges: Look at Supernatural, Fringe, Buffy, Angel, Revolution, Arrow, How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, etc... the final nine episodes of the first seasons and second seasons of these shows took them in more interesting directions and upped the quality from what came before.

Networks actually tell show producers to repeatedly introduce their characters for the first four-five episodes so you don't get a chance to build much until the fifth episode at the earliest usually. To me, they need to change this mentality because people don't stick around if it's too repetitive/boring -- they want progression right out of the gates.

With that being said though, I kind of hope someone does die. The stakes need to be raised and the audience needs a reason to actually care about what happens to these people. Also, it'd create some nice tension for when Colsson realizes that S.H.I.E.L.D. brought him back from the dead and not whoever may die. Plus, Joss is an executive producer... obviously one of the main characters has to die! lol

@CherryBomb I HOPE you're right. Unfortunately, I think the writers might think HER death would have more of a personal impact on Skye (and the audience)because she (Simmons) seems(ed) to have a more sympathetic bond with her.

Man I hooe thats not true about Simmons.

Simmons is the hottest sexiest thing on the show. She may even be in my top 5 hotties in the whole MCU.
My opinion of course. But damn of all the characters to kill off they kill off the one I'd want to live the most?
Messed up!
CherryBomb
CherryBomb - 11/5/2013, 5:29 AM
@PeterDarker

Yeah you're right. But Simmons is an emotional compass for the show. Skye doesn't seem to have loyalties to fully engage with. The team needs that dynamic with Simmons, they need a nice, innocence to add to their aggressive personalities. I honestly don't think the show will work as well without that.

You won't see Sharon Carter join the team: Unless the actress' show gets cancelled, the person who plays her in Captain America: The Winter Soldier already stars in her own show (Revenge) on ABC. I wouldn't be surprised if she made a cameo or two, but as far as a full-time member? Not until Revenge is done at least.

It's a pretty idiotic move to kill off a main character this early.
The show has done very little to establish backgrounds for these characters, to even establish raw emotion from them to feel a real impact from their death.

They're rushing to do something big because they need the ratings.

I would really like to see this show survive and thrive.

Having said that, I am finding the show harder and harder to watch. Last week there when there was not a new episode, I did not miss it at all!

All the characters have a background, an arch and a bit of mystery about them except Fitz and Simmons.

I am not sure they would kill any of them off this early in the series - but one of them might be the killer.

The way they set up Skye as the one who cannot be trusted it would be a pretty good switch to reveal another member as the traitor.
PeterDarker121
PeterDarker121 - 11/5/2013, 5:53 AM
@CherryBomb It will, I think... and I think this will also serve as a way for Coulson to ground the team and rally them from now on in her honor. It gives him a chance to do for HIS new "team" what Fury did for the Avengers when they thought HE died. We'll see, but the entire tone of the previews looked completely more serious than any of the previous ones. This might be the one where sh88 gets real...
