DAREDEVIL Star Charlie Cox Reveals The One Big Change He Hopes The MCU Will Make To The Hero's Costume

After Spider-Man: No Way Home, Charlie Cox's Man Without Fear is officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, the actor has shared his hopes for one key change to Matt Murdock's costume...

While Marvel Studios has never really shied away from embracing comic-accurate costumes, the Marvel Television TV shows did appear to have that old-fashioned way of thinking by trying to put a "realistic" spin on the characters' outfits. There were some fun nods here and there, and Daredevil did get a suit, but for the most part, they disappointed (see: Inhumans).

In the Man Without Fear's case, he had a red (and black) suit that was sorely lacking one key component: that classic "DD" logo on its chest. While that may seem like a minor omission to many of you, would you want to see Batman or Spider-Man head into action without their logos?

Talking to ComicBook.com, actor Charlie Cox shared his hopes for Daredevil's costume to evolve in the MCU. "If there is some new suit or if it does morph or change or it's redone or whatever, it will be so much more fun for the fans to just have that moment of like, 'Oh shit, that's what it is.'"

"What I would say is, I've always liked the idea that at some point in Matt's journey, his emotional journey, and again, I don't know how everything is happening, or what might happen, and how it ties into what we've already done, I have no idea at all. But I've always liked the idea that at some point he feels like he has earned the right to have the DD [on his chest], which we've never had."

"And one day down the line, I like the idea that he just makes that decision; we get to witness that evolution on screen. That's just a little idea that I've had that I thought would be quite cool."

When Matt Murdock inevitably suits up as Daredevil again, we'd hope the "DD" is there front and centre (there's no need to explain its presence). Rumour has it that 'ol Hornhead will be donning his original yellow suit in the MCU when he supposedly shows up in She-Hulk later this year.

Hopefully, Daredevil has a bright future in the MCU as he deserves the chance to make an impact.

Charlie Cox’s Daredevil should encounter another chemical spill as an adult involving a truck transporting hydrogen peroxide, rendering him a ginger.

@Jarvisjackrabbit - Or just a flashback of the original chemical spill, and show some of the chemical spill down a sewer and onto 4 turtles...

Wow. It's just occurred to me that he's never had the DD logo on his suit. The more you know, I guess lol

@KWilly - I thought the belt kind of gave us the symbols, albeit mirrored.

I though the suit was alright though.

@UnderBelly - it was modernized realistic looking like it but it could use some changes to it

@dragon316 - Agreed. if they're reinventing it only makes sense to make changes.

Yeah that would be nice, but the costume looked so good in live action I didn't even mind.

I really hope the yellow costume rumours aren't true. I think for the most part his Netflix suit was fine, but I wouldn't mind seeing a slightly more streamlined version of that when he eventually suits up again, especially if they could fix the slightly awkward looking neck area on the cowl. I also like that there's a bit of black on the suit rather than it being 100% red but I wouldn't mind them also scaling that back a bit so the black is less prominent.

As for the DD on the chest, I can take it or leave it as long as the rest of the suit looks good, of all the superheroes who wear an emblem on their chest I think Daredevil's is arguably the least important to the character overall - it's not like Spidey, Superman, Batman or the Fantastic Four running around without their insignias - and if anything I'd argue that Daredevil's horns act more like a symbol than having his initials on his chest.

@AC1 - I always hated yellow suit for him introduce yellow suit should have done so in Netflix series then make costume red for marvel no need go backwards that works for spiderman not daredevil not many fans like yellow suit

You know now that I think about it, I can see no reason for this version of Daredevil to have DD logo on his suit. It just feels weird for him to do that.

He's blind - why would he have two letters on the costume?

The original yellow costume was awful.
Even in the comics it was joked that only a blind person would war something like that.

No to yellow and no to the DD.

I could see Melvin buying into the press on Daredevil in the show and deciding to put a DD on his suit when Matt still doesn't want it and is forced to wear it until Melvin can make a new one. I could even see Melvin making him the yellow suit to try and "brighten" his image a bit and make him look more like a superhero to the public. If it's his only suit, Matt wouldn't have a choice but to wear it for a while. (I actually like the yellow suit for it's role in DD history, but it would be great to see the yellow colors be problematic for a vigilante trying to hide in the shadows.)

And then...it would look like he's flaunting who he is and taunting Kingpin every time he shuts down something of his. A "Who does he think he is?!" detail. Eventually, when the yellow suit is destroyed and Matt gets the darker, red suit back from Melvin, he tells Melvin, "Thanks, Melvin. But I think something's missing." and asks Melvin to put the DD on the red suit like a middle finger of a sort to Kingpin (for whatever Fisk does to irritate Matt that season). "I want him to know who's coming for him."

Just like Batman, DareDevil’s suit just shouldn’t look super armored like they do recently. I totally get the practicality of it. Don’t get me wrong. But both character’s whole point of dressing like they do is to scare the shit out of bad guys. Wearing a streamlined, muscular, monster-like suit does just that. Wearing all sorts of armor and the like just makes you look like a dude wearing armor.
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 3/3/2022, 12:49 PM
@Stinkor1 - It depends on the interpretation, really. Intimidation is a factor, but even in the comics it has always been balanced with practical use. If Bruce really wanted criminals to see him as some inhuman night creature, he probably would wear a yellow belt with pouches.

When you look at the Daredevil suit, while it's streamlined, I would definitely not call it "monster-like." Even with artists like Lee Bermejo who draw the horns longer, it looks like a guy in a suit. I don't see a lot of monsters with their initials on their chest. The monstrous element comes largely in how they're presented (in shadows, beside rooftop gargoyles, etc).

While the streamlined look works in the comics, live action adaptations grounded in a degree of realism arguably have to play up the more practical elements of the costumes of more grounded characters. We don't ask why Spider-man is in tights, but for Steve Rogers, Bruce Wayne, and Matt Murdock, most viewers would instinctively wonder why they aren't taking greater measure to protect themselves.

Strip away the armor on Daredevil and you're left with something pretty close to the Affleck costume. It could certainly be executed in a way that looks cooler than that, but you're still evoking the same core look, which I personally don't find to be scary or monstrous.

IMO, to make the monstrous thing really work you need to build the whole film's vision around that stylistically. A more heightened, creepy, twisted, stylized reality than makes sense for either the MCU or what Reeves is doing with Batman.

@Stinkor1 - ya know i like your idea.. to have a suit that's more of a scary thing than actual combat uniform... and having the character acknowledge that it "ain't the best to fight in" but also that "its so scary it frightens off half of the guys i would usually come across".
JonC
JonC - 3/3/2022, 4:47 PM
@JonC - in fact, if we had a character that was in the shadows and had a creepy vibe to him like Jason Voheeves then i would be all in for it... though maybe not DD.

A red version of the black suit with the updated cowl would be perfect imo. Not a fan of the armored look for Daredevil.

Aside from a big yes to a BIG DD logo on his chest, I hope for brighter red too and an update neck piece for his cowl.

DD is the greatest comic book series to date. I'm worried but also excited to see what they do next.
