Why Matt Murdock Is No Longer DAREDEVIL When THE DEFENDERS Begins

Things were looking bleak for Matt Murdock when Daredevil season two ended. His law partner Foggy Nelson had parted ways with him, Elektra had been murdered by The Hand, and Wilson Fisk had sworn revenge on the hero. Matt also revealed his secret identity to Karen Page but when The Defenders kicks off, some time will have passed and The Man Without Fear is no longer protecting Hell's Kitchen.

It doesn't sound like Matt's decision to unmask has paid off and Elektra's demise has clearly left him unable to hit the streets and fight crime as he normally would; that leave's Daredevil's future in doubt.

"At the end of Daredevil season two, everyone failed," actor Charlie Cox explains. "Matt failed, and the consequences were devastating. Six or so months have passed, and he’s had to completely reevaluate everything that he believes, everything that he does. And he’s decided to hang up the suit, as it were. He’s focusing all of his energies on being a pro bono lawyer. And I don’t think he has any interest, really, in being Daredevil anymore." So, what brings Daredevil back to Hell's Kitchen?

We'll have to wait and see but we know he'll be crossing paths with Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Trailers for The Defenders have shown Matt wearing both a makeshift costume and his classic suit so he clearly decides to head back into action to take down The Hand and attempt to save Elektra...

I feel with all the build up no-one in the team should be in a place of reluctants to be a hero as we waste story telling time treading something we've seen.

I want them to be the hero and see conflict arise from that

@Knightrider - blah, blah, blah, backpedaling. Blah, blah, more reason to do more of the same, blah, blah wait til episode six of ten to see him suit up. Don't make the Matrix 2 mistake. Show me his lack of fear, instead of bs reasons why the one Man who wouldn't fear succumbs to it. My two cents...

@Knightrider - I quite agree. The reluctance of heroes always annoys me. Especially when they back pedal to go through that phase again. Honestly, it's one reason I REALLY liked Iron Fist. Dude was always so ready to hero it up and throw some damn hands!

@Knightrider - I'd agree if this was a film but it's going to be 8 hours of programming. There should be plenty of time to tell stories of overcoming reluctance. I'd rather see a personal struggle with Matt individually more than the team struggle with coming together. I know they'll do the team building problems but hopefully that is quick and doesn't drag on for more than 1 episode.

@BullyFU - I agree I want to see personal struggle, but this has had build up. So for the that shouldn't be about if he wants to be DD that should be answered by now.
With this show I would say Matt's personal problem should be about how affective can he be in this world full of super strong beings, plus they want his Ex dead. For me on a personal level there is enough without going through will he put on the suit story line.

Reluctants can work like with Hulk in Avengers but that felt right as was about control this feels like a way to drag a story out

@Knightrider - I agree but I'm not taking this as a strike against the show at this point because it could be resolved in the first episode. Last season of Daredevil ended with some questions that this should answer regarding Matt & Karen. Being Daredevil kept him from being with Karen and caused a huge rift in his relationship with Foggy. It's understandable why he'd stop. Hopefully those are the reasons why he stopped and they're able to sort them out quickly because I don't want to see that drawn out for more than 2 episodes. I'm just hoping it's his relationship with Karen, and Foggy to a certain extent, that caused him to hang up the horns. If it's something else then they better make it interesting and make sense rather than just being shoved in there to give him more of a personal struggle to kick things off because with Elektra's return, he should be the one who is most invested in fighting the Hand.

@jerryblake - this film is underrated. And it's even a Michael Bay movie.

@Dresdenkingwack - Yeah, but it was made back when producer Don Simpson (Beverly Hills Cop, Top Gun) was still alive, and he knew how to wrangle an action movie into a decent film. After he died, Bruckheimer and Bay went increasingly off the rails.

It's frightening to think that a man rumored to have done legendary amounts of cocaine was a restraining influence on those two, but there you go.

I don't like DD in S2 as much as S1. He seems less calm and cool.

I always loved this concept.
And with characters like Matt, it's also even more special, because it's like they lose a bit of faith, maybe even in God, so to explore that it's very interesting in my opinion.
I trust Goddard tho, he's the reason why DD season are so f*cking great.
