Wednesday's episode of Loki revealed that the God of Mischief is bisexual, a moment that resonated with a lot of fans for obvious reasons. This is the first major Marvel Cinematic Universe character to be revealed as being LGBTQ+, and it feels like a step in the right direction for this shared world.
Talking to Deadline, Sylvie actress Sophia Di Martino opened up on filming this sequence, crediting director Kate Herron for making sure that Loki's sexuality was addressed head-on in the Disney+ series.
"When we were filming it, we were aware how important it was. [Director] Kate [Herron] was really keen on getting that into the show," the actress explains. "People have been waiting for it for a long time, and it was in the comics for a long time. It was really important to us, to her and a lot of people."
“In terms of playing it, we just played it like any other scene," she adds, revealing that some on set even compared it to the Al Pacino and Robert De Niro diner scene in Heat. "It’s two acquaintances having a chat on the train. I didn’t realize it would be such a massive thing, and I’m so pleased it is. The engagement with it, and the reaction to it are incredible. I’m glad I didn’t over-play it."
There's no denying that this was a historic moment for the MCU, and while we don't know how much Marvel Studios plans to explore this concept in the future, it's still undeniably meaningful.
Heading into this Wednesday's instalment, Loki and Sylvie are trapped on a moon that's about to be obliterated, seemingly with no escape. Hopefully, the series will still find time to explore their dynamic, especially as that's something we've seen really take off since "Lamentis" dropped on the streamer.
