Quentin Tarantino Reveals Why He Never Made His LUKE CAGE Movie Starring Laurence Fishburne

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino has explained why he never ended up making his planned Luke Cage movie which could have starred Ant-Man and The Wasp's Laurence Fishburne...

As you may have heard, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino was once considering directing a Luke Cage movie. Based on the classic Hero for Hire comic books, it likely would have been inspired by blaxploitation movies similar to Jackie Brown, but it never came to pass. Now, the director has expanded on his decision not to make it, and it has nothing to do with any sort of creative issues.

During a recent conversation with Amy Schumer, Tarantino explained that rather than clashing with Marvel Comics or anything like that, it was his friends who ended up talking him out of it!

"All my friends were like, ‘No, no, no, man, it’s got to be Wesley Snipes,’" Tarantino said, explaining that they disagreed with his casting choice of Ant-Man and The Wasp star Laurence Fishburne. "And I go, ‘Well look, I like Wesley Snipes, but I mean, Larry Fishburne is practically Marlon Brando. I mean, I think 'Fish' is the man.’"

To give you some context of how long ago these discussions took place, the director added that his Luke Cage idea came between Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. Ultimately, his friends believed that Snipes had the better physique, not to mention the required star power.

Ultimately, Tarantino could only see Fishburne as Luke Cage, but after his friends convinced him otherwise, it seems he just gave up on the project altogether, and that's why it didn't happen.

There's no denying that it's interesting to think about what might have been, though...

I would have definitely gone with Fishburne over Snipes for the character. He needed smarter friends.

Man, his friends are insane. Fishburn would have been a hundred times better for that role than Wesley Snipes. Don't get me wrong, I like them both a lot. But Fishburn is bigger, has the look, and I believe can pull off the acting much better for Cage. Particularly in a blaxploitatiin film.

I like Snipes too, but I always saw him as just an action star. He's great in those roles, but I don't feel he has the acting chops like Fishburn does to pull off what Tarantino had in mind.

Fish was the better choice, but if we are doing what if casting, I wouldn't have mind seeing 90s Ving Rhames as Luke.

@CurlyBill - wouldn’t be mad at this either.

Young Rhames had the look, size, chops and presence.

@CurlyBill - You know. When I first saw your post I scoffed at it. But then it took all of 3 seconds for me to go, "Damn, that is a really good pick". Lol

I think I still like Fishburn better. But Ving would have been really good too. Fishburn just has the face for Cage. He's what I would picture Cage to look like in real life. And I feel he's a better actor than Rames. But not by much. I like them both quite a bit.

I don't know what I would prefer more, a Luke Cage movie or a Star Trek movie made by Quentin Tarantino

@MalseMarcel - I think a Luke Cage flick sounds more interesting and better suited for Tarantino than Star Trek.

If they’re not gonna use the Netflix defenders, maybe now they can do a 70’s era set of movies or shows with all those characters Iike they should have done in the first place.
