MOON KNIGHT Spoiler Stills From "The Tomb" Released As Directors Break Down THAT Ending

Marvel Studios has released a new batch of stills from yesterday's episode of Moon Knight, while directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead shed some light on that crazy final sequence in "The Tomb."

Yesterday's episode of Moon Knight ended with Marc Spector being gunned down by Arthur Harrow, though he'd wake up moments later in a mental hospital. Things soon took an even crazier turn there, and the stage has now been set for us to take a deep dive into the hero's psyche next Wednesday.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead were asked what the inspiration was behind this trippy sequence. "It came from wanting to do the least expected thing and completely disorient the audience, while also being completely true to the character that we've built over four episodes," Moorhead explained. "Also the comic book character: There's a run of Moon Knight written by Jeff Lemire, and [Greg] Smallwood did the art, and it has a lot of similar feelings and visuals to what happens at the end of episode 4. So we're really glad to be able to honor the original comics, the ones that we were the most drawn to when we were trying to crack Moon Knight. That's where the inspiration came from, especially visually and tonally."

The filmmakers declined to say too much about that hippo's appearance in the final scene, but Benson did share some insights into how they made it a reality. "It was really interesting from a technical standpoint. The way we shot that is there are three performers screaming in that scene, but there were never two people together," he recalls. "We had someone pretending to be a hippo, screaming by themselves. Then we had Oscar Isaac as Marc, screaming by himself. Then we had Oscar Isaac as Steven, screaming by himself. None of those people were together. It's like an opera of screaming."

As for what's to come in the final two episodes of Moon Knight, all Moorehead would say is, "I think if you were surprised by episode 4, get ready to be surprised again by episodes 5 and 6. I know it just sounds like a nice little tag, but I promise you that's actually the case."

We're definitely intrigued to see where things go next for Marc Spector and Steven Grant, and it would be no bad thing for Marvel Studios to shed a little more light on how he they became Moon Knight. If you're familiar with the comic books mentioned by Moorhead, you might have an idea where things are headed, though we have a feeling the MCU's spin on the story will include some surprises.

Depending on the last 2 episodes, Moon Knight might dethrone Loki as best Disney+ show for me. It has been awesome thus far, really looking forward to the Jake Lockley reveal. I'm hoping he will have a different version of the Moon Knight costume.

@Urubrodi - Agreed, seeing this opinion a lot too so it will be interesting to see how it ends and the reaction if this Doesn't happen.

Only thing i'm gutted about is that we probably won't get Jake until the finale with most of Episode 5 focused on them escaping the Asylum/Construct.

I feel like the show could end with a perfect set-up for the character going forwards and then we have that horrible wait of when he could appear again

@Urubrodi - same, I remember some of the not so favourable reviews after the first 4 episodes debuted so I managed my expectations a bit but I’ve been enjoying it

@Urubrodi - Initially I had predicted that we wouldn't actually see Jake manifest until a post credits scene in the final episode (because of everything else that the series was trying to juggle) where we see him driving a taxi in NYC. Like he picks up some businessman type to get info from him and aside from the reflection of Oscar's eyes and cap in the rearview mirror and the Brooklyn accent, at the very end we his his ID on the back of the seat with a pic of Oscar and the name of "Jake". And that's where those cruel sons of bitches leave us hanging.

But then after Ep.3 I changed my mind and figured we'd actually see Jake in action sooner than a post credits scene, but now after Ep. 4 I'm going back to my original theory. It would be just like Marvel to give us hints for the rest of the series about Jake but nothing concrete until the final stinger. And even then, general audiences wouldn't know for sure if that's another personality or just Marc assuming another identity to go undercover or whatever (which Layla had mentioned in Ep.2 when she was asking if "Steven" was another one of his identities). Of course WE'D know who Jake is but general audiences might not be so sure because as far as I can recall they haven't actually mentioned Jake's name thus far.

A good epeisode as most have been and really enjoyed the crazy ending, but I must admit that Layla drove me crazy a bit. I know she wanted to confront Marc about the death of her father, but seems to me she could have waited until they got the hell out of the tomb first seeing as she knew the bad guys were all around and approaching. Even Marc said we need to go and I will tell you everything once we get out of here. She was the reason for him getting shot. I found myself yelling at the TV saying "Have this conversation later. Are you crazy?" Other than that, a fantastic episode.

Anyone else think this series is outside the MCU?

I'm in between thinking that or thinking it's possibly pre Iron Man. There's nothing I've seen at least that's making me think it's happening in 2022 (2025 for current MCU date). We do see some use of smart phones, but they did exist in 2007. I've not seen the use of any modern vehicles either... just a thought.

Maybe I need to re watch them again.

@UnderBelly - It´s definitely in the MCU. Do you think Feige/Marvel Studios would do a show (with the Marvel intro and all) that it's not in the MCU? Marvel Studios only makes MCU projects, the show is on the MCU section of Disney+ and it's set after Hawkeye according to the chronological order on D+.
UnderBelly

@Moriakum - Oh its definitely a Marvel Studios production, I'm not doubting that, but for example:

Could it be happening on a 'variant' Earth?

These have now been established in (or outside/around) the MCU timeline Like how Loki's series is?

I'm also aware of the finale showing the week that Dr Strange 2 comes out, so I'm intrigued to see if they make some connection by series' end.

@UnderBelly - it is set after the blip in the mainstream timeline as the Global Repatriation Council has an advertisement on the side of the bus when Marc takes over from Steven in the fight scene in the street.

@Vampyre75 - Ah yes.. you're right... well there goes that theory, unless a variant earth also went through the blip.

The part where he shoved his hand down Alexander the Great’s mouth [frick]ed me up. Maybe the most uncomfortable I’ve ever been watching a thing.

So, I was on board.

I was VERY skeptical when they. went with the "hero looses his powers" trope, BUT they are sticking it and the mummy chase parts were AWESOME! I'm kind of loving the show, but I really don't like the reliance on standard TV tropes that I'm seeing. Like the loss of powers is okay and they're actually doing it well and keeping the action and story moving at least.

BUT a dream episode? (I know it's more complicated than that but realistically, that is what this is) Come on. We're only on season 1 and they're hitting two HUGE writing fatigue tropes that you've seen in literally EVERY superhero show EVER.

Again, I get it, and they're at least doing them pretty well. But modern audiences need something new and fresh, outside of the standard tropes you see everywhere else.

Maybe I'm took picky though, which very well could be the case.

I'm still on board, and it's holding my attention despite those tropes, but I could REALLY do without them.

@Demigods - With some superheroes a 'dream' is just more part of their character... lees so with Hulk, Loki, Spidey, Hawkeye, etc but more so with Tony and his PTSD, Marc, Strange, Wanda
Demigods
Demigods - 4/21/2022, 1:07 PM
@JonC - yeah... but they're still going to dedicate more than an entire episode of a miniseries to a dream episode.

They're relying on a trope that has been exhausted by this point. Next thing, they'll have a time travel episode and a trial.. wait, they've already had the trial.

Look, I'm enjoying the show.

But saying "dreams are part of their character" is a weak argument for a boring ass plot device that is meant to simply take up run time.
Everyone dreams. They might not remember it when they do, but everyone dreams. That is part of every human beings' character. Everyone works out trauma and hypotheticals via dreams. That is not something special to this character. What it is is lazy writing, again for the purpose of taking up air time.

And I do not like that. These are the traps that you see shows fall into in their 3rd or 4th season... not the 3rd and 4th episode of a miniseries.

Look, I'm on board for the character and the story arc. What we dont need is a break from that, even if it does progress the characters introspection.
That is crappy writing.

There was a moment when he was talking to the psychiatrist Ethan Hake that I was beginning to become convinced this was Identity, and everything we’ve seen so far is in his head. I was this close to declaring it the biggest tv show twist ever.

Was still good though
