A couple of days ago, a Ms. Marvel rumour started doing the rounds on social media claiming that Fawad Khan and Mehwish Hayat will be playing "Hasan" and "Aisha," Kamala Khan's great-grandparents. In the comic books, they first appeared in 2015's Ms. Marvel #8 for a flashback set during the end of Britain's occupation of India.
This period saw most Hindus stay in India and many Muslims forced into Pakistan, and before embarking on their journey, the pregnant Aisha prayed on a shooting star for her daughter's safety ahead of an uncertain future in a new country. It was a poignant moment, and one that could have major ramifications for Ms. Marvel - and her superpowers - in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Of course, we already know this iteration of Kamala won't be an Inhuman and that her Embiggening abilities will be portrayed on screen through a Green Lantern-style energy force. The prevailing theory is that the teenager will get her hands on Kree Nega-Bands that give her amazing new abilities, and this apparent flashback in the series might confirm it.
On the page, Aisha hides money in her bangles for the trip to Pakistan and eventually passes them down through the generations (with Kamala making them part of her costume). They don't hold any secret powers there, but we'd bet on this version of the bands being the source of Ms. Marvel's newfound abilities.
There are many ways the bangles could be retconned into Kree artefacts, and this would certainly explain how Kamala winds up appearing in The Marvels alongside Captain Marvel and Spectrum.
Ms. Marvel is expected to premiere on Disney+ later this year.
