Marvel Studios' decision to change Kamala Khan's powers has proven to be extremely divisive among fans, though it's not exactly surprising that they decided against heading down the route of making her an Inhuman.
That would have been an awful lot of story to cram into Ms. Marvel, and we can thank Marvel Television for dropping the ball on ABC's Inhumans for those characters not being in the MCU. Of course, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness did just introduce a Black Bolt Variant, so many fans have speculated that they could somehow factor into this Disney+ series.
Well, that wasn't the case in today's finale, but Kamala did "Embiggen" and showed that, while these Noor energy powers are different from the comic books, they can be portrayed in a way that pays homage to the source material. However, that was far from the biggest reveal.
You see, Ms. Marvel is a mutant.
At the end of the episode, Bruno explains that while they know that the source of Kamala's power is from the bangle, there's something different about her genes compared to the rest of the teenager's family. He's discovered a "mutation," and with that, the X-Men '97 theme (which is listed in the credits) plays.
This is a game-changing reveal, and officially makes Kamala the MCU's first known mutant. She doesn't seem too fazed, and shrugs it off as just another label.
However, this has to mean one of two things. Ms. Marvel is able to use those Noor powers because she's got the X-Gene or her natural abilities will make themselves known down the line (meaning she can be portrayed in a more comic-accurate way). Also, we now can't help but think there are other mutant teenagers out there who are about to discover their newfound powers.
The "X-Men" certainly has a nice ring to it, eh?
