If the first episode of Secret Invasion was a little slow for your tastes, then there was plenty to unpack in "Promises."

Beginning in 1997, we see the younger Nick Fury meet Gravik for the first time. He was just a child then, but managed to escape from behind Kree enemy lines after his parents were killed, piloting a ship back to Earth. He seems reluctant to trust a human, but Fury manages to bring him into the fold.

We later see Fury promise that, if the Skrulls now on Earth promise to work for him and go undercover as humans, he and Carol Danvers will do everything they can to find them a new home. Attempts to relocate them after the events of Captain Marvel failed, though we know this vow is also one Fury failed to see through.

That's not only surprising when you think back to what we saw from Fury in The Avengers (remember the HYDRA weapons he'd created behind the backs of Earth's Mightiest Heroes?), but it goes some way in explaining why Gravik hates the former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director so much.

In the present day, Fury - still distraught over Maria Hill's death - argues with Talos and learns that, after Skrullos (the Skrull homeworld) was destroyed, over a million Skrulls ended up on Earth.

This is news to Fury and it's then the extent of this invasion really sinks in. The two part ways but not before Fury points out that there's simply no way for Skrulls to co-exist with humans on Earth, particularly when we can't manage to live peacefully with each other, never mind an alien race.

Later in the episode, Gravik is chosen as the new leader of the Skrulls on Earth and Fury is fired by Rhodey. However, as he points out to War Machine, "I'm Nick Fury. Even when I'm out, I'm in."

In the closing moments, a dejected Fury returns home, and we see that there's a Skrull in his home preparing a meal in the kitchen. It turns out they're married, and back in her human form (Charlayne Woodard is credited as "Priscilla"), the two embrace and share a kiss!

However, we don't think Fury's wife has been secretly replaced as we're pretty sure this is Varra, the Skrull who introduces Fury to Gravik in the episode's opening moments...

I'm just glad they didn't make Fury a Skrull. That would have ruined everything since Iron Man. This should be a 10 episode season, Kyle Broadstreet is used to that on Mr Robot, also more creative freedom. I'm still slightly enjoying this, though Gravik is so generic

This episode wasn't that bad. Overall, I think the show still comes off like some CW NCIS Crime Drama.

It's bad TV to be sure. But nothing much offended me this episode.
With Marvel, sometimes I will take that in itself as a win.

@TempleRod - just like the Flash, just horrific sometimes at parts.

"...he and Carol Danvers will do everything they can to find them a new home."

How tough should that be and why exactly does it have to be earth? I mean, if Guardians of the Galaxy has taught has nothing else it's that the universe has as many habitable worlds and species as Walmart has shop-lifters. 🤨

@SuperiorHeckler - Very good point. They haven't done a very good job explaining Captain Marvel's whereabouts for the last 30 years. Alot of those promises fell o. Her shoulders since Nick is Earth-bound

This episode was pretty good. Lots of great action. Kind of odd that Fury is married to a Skrull but I guess thats a thing now.

@xHollywoodx - Is it me or is it kinda weird that he's with a Skrull that chose to look like black woman?

It's you.

@BuzzKillington - Really, you don't think its weird that the Skrull that married Fury, who could look like anyone, decided to be black? Was he only attracted to her because of that, given she presented in human form specifically for him? Did the writers decide that that was appropriate, and her appearing as some one else wasn't?
If he loved her why wouldn't she stay as a Skrull?
Just seems kinda wonkey

@Radders -

"you don't think its weird that the Skrull that married Fury, who could look like anyone, decided to be black?"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you suggesting that why would anyone choose to be black? I didn't think much of it that he was married to a Skrull who's human form is a black woman. Old black man has a black wife. For his generation it makes sense I guess

@BuzzKillington - lol that first assumption took some mental gymnastics lol, no I'm clearly not saying that.
Though on a seperate point, given its mentioned several times in the show, that a black man would stand out in Moscow, it seems odd some of the Skrull's in Russia would chose that appearance - just on a narrative point really.

Yep, maybe as you say, old couple who are the same ethnicity.

@Radders -

Sorry about that.

Well he did drive somewhere. Possibly he left Russia. Cause now a black couple one half being Nick Fury living in Russia is too conspicuous. I think he may have went to a neighboring country.

Great episode. The back and forth between Fury and Rhodey was the highlight for me.

Better than ep 1, marginally and ep 1 was bad. Its still dumb AF though.

I'd also point out that the Asgardians manage to co-exist on Earth pretty well, but I guess they forgot about them!

Nice of the show to remind us again, twice and in an incredibly contrived way, that Nick Fury is black...and so is Rhodey! I'd never noticed!
GhostDog
GhostDog - 6/28/2023, 3:03 PM
@Radders - the Asgardians are completely different circumstances. They helped defend the earth against Thanos. Their most prominent representative (THOR) has helped defend the earth a number of times as a part of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. They also CANNOT SHAPE SHIFT. The Skrulls premiere abilities are based in deception and replacement. That's something that would scare humans.

Boo hoo yes they're black, get over it. That scene was to give a context to these men that we've never had.
comicfan100
comicfan100 - 6/28/2023, 4:21 PM
@Radders - Talos said MILLIONS of Skrulls are on Earth. I'm not sure how populated New Asgard is, but their numbers have dwindled significantly since Infinity War.
Radders
Radders - 6/29/2023, 11:30 AM
@GhostDog - yep - that wasn't the argument presented

Never had a problem with Nick or Rhodey being black so maybe you should rebuke the writers, they're the ones that cant seem to get over it and have to keep mentioning it. And that scene was fine until that part was clunkily dumped into it
