Funko is in the process of revealing its New York Comic-Con exclusives, and among them is a first look at merchandise for Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion.
With Disney+ Day right around the corner, we'd been hoping for a sneak peek to be released and that now seems highly likely. In the meantime, this Funko Pop shows a Nick Fury who is a far cry from the trenchcoat wearing S.H.I.E.L.D. Director we first met in 2008's Iron Man.
Samuel L. Jackson will, of course, return as the character, but he's now decked out in nondescript clothing, has no eyepatch, and is rocking a grey beard. Fury was among those wiped from existence by Thanos, but before that, we saw that he was still working with Maria Hill in an effort to protect the world. Later, he'd joined the Skrulls in outer space for some reason.
The comic book version of Secret Invasion was a massive event that kicked off with shape-shifting Skrulls replacing many of Earth's Mightiest Heroes in an effort to take control of the planet. From there, an all-out war followed, with a full-blown invasion taking place (which, believe it or not, was ultimately stopped by Norman Osborn).
All signs point to the Disney+ TV series being much smaller in scale, following Fury as he looks to stop the invasion from happening in the first place.
However, we clearly shouldn't underestimate the show's scale if a recently released plot synopsis is anything to go by. "Secret Invasion is a newly announced series heading to Disney+ that stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos," reads the streamer's official description, "characters who first met in Captain Marvel."
"The crossover event series showcases a faction of shape-shifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years."
