Secret Invasion isn't quite as epic as the comic book it shares a name with but the stakes in the series have still been high. A wanted fugitive after being framed for the murder of one of his closes allies, we've watched as Nick Fury has attempted to avert World War III and an alien invasion.
Picking up quite a few loose plot threads from Captain Marvel, the show revealed that both Fury and Carol Danvers failed to find the Skrulls a new home. The former used that to his advantage, promising the shape-shifters a place on Earth in exchange for their help on covert S.H.I.E.L.D. missions.
That came back to bite him, of course, as the understandably resentful Skrulls were all too willing to align themselves with Gravik to help enact his plan and make Earth their own.
Gravik's mission fails in the finale and, as the series wraps up, Fury reunites with his wife Varra and returns to space in an effort to broker peace talks with the Kree. If nothing else, that should allow the Skrulls to no longer be at war with their fellow aliens, and we're hoping The Marvels reveals what happened next.
Fury will be front and centre in that sequel, all as part of his efforts to protect Earth from his new space station, S.A.B.E.R. However, those of you hoping for anything teasing that movie were likely disappointed earlier today.
Unfortunately, the Secret Invasion finale does not have a post-credits scene.
This is definitely unusual for an MCU TV show and an unusual decision when The Marvels has been shot. Seeing as Secret Invasion is supposed to set the stage for Armor Wars (and the MCU getting a formidable new superhero in Gi'ah), there were certainly plenty of options for a stinger that tees up Phase 5 and beyond.
Heck, we were anticipating at least one more surprise Skrull reveal but when Fury and Varra head into space, that's where this story ends. Is it a lack of planning on Marvel Studios' part of a creative decision? Hopefully, we'll find out down the line.
