THE PUNISHER Star Jon Bernthal Wants Possible MCU Return As Frank Castle To Be Dark And Gritty Enough

Daredevil and The Punisher star Jon Bernthal has opened up on possibly returning as Frank Castle in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but notes that he wouldn't want the vigilante to be watered down at all...

Marvel Television is no more, and that's left the status of shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Daredevil somewhat up in the air. There's been talk of "soft reboots" that will bring actors like Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio back as new Variants of the same characters, and that does seem like the best possible way for Marvel Studios to avoid unnecessary baggage.

There are a lot of heroes and villains from those shows that fans would like to see brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle/The Punisher is quite easily near the top of the list.

Recently, Forbes spoke to The Punisher star, who said that as anxious as he is to play Frank Castle again, there are certain elements of the character he wouldn't want to say goodbye to. "As far as going on in the future, it’s a character that I really feel like I have sort of in my bones and in my heart," Bernthal said. "I’m really grateful that I had the opportunity, and what sort of happens in the future isn’t about whether they want to do it or not again."

"I don’t really prescribe anything to those kinds of decisions. It’s just about, if they do do it, are we gonna be able to do it right? Is it gonna be dark enough? Is it gonna be gritty enough? Are we gonna give the fans, and the folks that this character means so much to, are we gonna give them what they deserve? And if the answer is yes, man oh man, I would love that."

The MCU's Punisher probably wouldn't be R-Rated, but there are still ways to do the character justice in a PG-13 enviroment. There are plenty of upcoming movies and TV shows Frank could make his presence felt in, but it's ultimately going to hinge on how interested Kevin Feige is in the anti-hero.

Check out what Bernthal had to tell us about a possible Punisher return in the video below:

Feels weird that he is doing a TV series remake of American Gigolo, but you know what?
He is going to be great in it as always

Too bad he didn't ask that before the solo series.

But I do love Jon in the role, DD s2 proved that he can be the perfect choice.

@TheManWithoutFear - What do you mean? The two Punisher solo series' were dark and gritty as hell!

@CorndogBurglar - yeah it was, I thought it was great until dude on S2 barely had scars from the glass, and yet felt so disfigured, but also his schemes seemed superfluous. Now that preacher guy! He was scary! Dude was great on Shooter as well

@TheManWithoutFear - DD s2 is criminally underrated, that whole season is a comic book fan's dream come true.

So glad he's saying this. I think Marvel knows that people loved him as Frank, just like they know fans loved Cox as Daredevil. Marvel also knows the fans loved Deadpool and recognized that a 3rd one needs to be rated R.

So hopefully, Marvel understands that there are a lot of fans that would want Bernthal back, and now Bernthal has made it clear that he only wants to come back if it's done justice.

Punisher is too popular for Marvel to not use, so hopefully these things add up to a Rated R Punisher in the MCU.

I couldn't care less if Punisher just sticks to his own corner of the MCU and never interacts with the Avengers. That's when he's at his best anyway. All I need is for it to recognize that he's in the same world, and I'm good.

This guy IS the Punisher. I [frick]ing LOVE his take in Daredevil. His solo series had its moments but was also very flawed, he really shined in DD S2. The more of him and Kingpin and DD interacting the better.

Just did a rewatch of all 3 seasons of DD back to back. Skipped defenders because I hated Luke Cage and Iron Fist as characters and wasn’t too fussed on JJ. But man, even in its lesser moments Daredevil was such a fantastic show.

If they brought it back, what would you guys wanna see? I’m personally up for more Bullseye, fully unhinged and in his own suit. And always more Fisk.

He's got Dillon's Frank face.
You can't cast anyone else, fact that he nails it and understands the character completely he's the MCU Punisher. That's it lol

Like Cox as Daredevil and D'Onofrio as Kingpin, Bernthal really embraces the character for me. Really hope those three get to return to the roles in proper MCU stories

@HulkisHorny - They got Marhasala for Blade, he’ll be like 50 by the time the movie comes out. Wolverine looks better with age also.

And most people are worried about that.

Also black don’t crack. Look at Sam Jackson.

Hope they return sooner than they milk the cow dry with those horrible rumored spin offs.

Loved his version of the character, but the writing on the show was just not to par… most of the neflix ones suffered from just terrible writing instead of just using the comic source material… ugh

Sounds like he loved the role. I liked the solo series but that S2 ending was peak punisher. Wish we got ma gnucci and other absurd characters.
