WANDAVISION Head Writer Jac Schaeffer Reveals Alternate Ending With Doctor Strange's Cameo

WandaVision Head Writer Jac Schaeffer has shed some light on original plans for Doctor Strange in the Disney+ series, explaining the extent of the Sorcerer Supreme's cameo and why it ended up being cut.

Prior to WandaVision's arrival on Disney+, it was widely reported that Benedict Cumberbatch was set to make a cameo appearance as Doctor Strange in the series finale. When that didn't happen, fans were left beyond disappointed, especially after those Mephisto and Quicksilver theories didn't pan out.

Since then, we've learned that there were once plans for the Sorcerer Supreme to meet the Scarlet Witch before the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness...until there weren't.

Talking to Rolling Stone, head writer Jac Schaeffer addressed WandaVision's alternate ending. "The plan when I came on board was that there would, at the end of the series, be a handoff and that Dr. Strange’s participation would amount to essentially a short cameo," she confirmed. "So early outlines had varying versions of the two of them [Wanda and Dr. Strange] kind of riding off into the sunset together. And it didn’t feel quite right."

"We wanted to fulfill Wanda’s agency and autonomy within this particular story. So it did feel a little tacked on," Schaeffer continued. "Another problem was, if Dr. Strange shows up at just the end, where was he this whole time? I did love writing variations of Dr. Strange, variations on those final beats. It was a pleasure to write for him. There were versions where she was flying past the city limits and then encountered Dr. Strange, that kind of thing."

The writer went on to explain that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was well aware of how much fans were keen to see Strange appear, but agreed that it took too much from Wanda's story.

"Some people might say, 'It would’ve been so cool to see Dr. Strange,' but it would have taken away from Wanda, which is what we didn’t want to do," Schaeffer concluded. "We didn’t want the end of the show to be commoditized to go to the next movie, or, 'Here’s the white guy, let me show you how power works.' That wasn’t what we wanted to say."

The fact that the Scarlet Witch and Sorcerer Supreme were set to fly off together does point to them being allies in the Doctor Strange sequel, though a lot could have changed since production on that movie began (especially after we saw Wanda diving into the pages of the Darkhold).

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to be released in theaters on March 25, 2022.

I’m glad they didn’t tack that on at the end. I’m happy with the ending.

@JonAwesome - I fear this kinda SJW preventative decision making is getting out of hand. Now the Sorcerer Supreme can't help a powerful woman who just found out she is a Witch and has no grasp on her true power yet, who spent an entire series showcasing her lack of understanding of her own abilities, and now we get a potentially iconic cameo which EVERYONE WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO WITH POSITIVITY.... just because of his skin color and gender. Even though helping magic users safely understand their power so the don't endanger others is literally part of the Sorcerer Supremes job description.

They didn't let Strange do his job because they were afraid. But if the Sorcerer Supreme were a woman of color, would they have been afraid of the cameo that was a no Brainerd even to them before they chickened out?

@ElricReturns - I guess in the SJW era, a man mentoring or even just helping... just helping... a woman... is considered potentially offensive. So we will never see a man mentor a woman on film again.

'Here’s the white guy, let me show you how power works.'
Again with that BS. Strange's not "the white guy", he's been established as the [frick]ing SORCERER SUPREME thanks to whom all of what happened in Endgame (and the ultimate defeat of Thanos) was possible.

That beiing said, I do think that having Strange show up at the end could've felt forced.

Wow, they still think they wrote Wanda as a hero. That is fascinating.

@Waddles - Yea. As much as I disliked the ending for the lack of repercussion for her wrongdoings (she did manipulate a whole town, basically holding them hostage, for days on end), Dr Strange showing up with both riding into the sunset would've felt as an even greater lack of consequence.

@BeyondtheFuture - I think she left the series looking like a mess to be honest. She figured her shit out but at what cost. Any sane viewer looking at it logically sees an emotionally troubled woman who ran away from taking accountability for her actions.

Not that she would ever consider allowing the govt to hold her again. Only a mystical force can hold her accountable and that is Strange.

Now I think about it it’s good Dr Strange didn’t show up

That's all Strange is now.
