WANDAVISION Showrunner Jac Schaeffer Reveals Alternate Plans For Kathryn Hahn's "Agnes" In The Series

Heading into WandaVision, it was pretty obvious that Agnes would ultimately be revealed as Agatha Harkness, but that made the "Agatha All Along" sequence no less satisfying.

In the final couple of episodes, we learned that her plan was to steal the Scarlet Witch's power for herself, and while the door was left open to Agatha being portrayed as Wanda's mentor, she was very much the villain in this series.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, WandaVision showrunner Jac Schaeffer was asked whether Agatha was part of Kevin Feige's plan or someone she chose to add to the series.

"No," she says of the latter point. "They had a lot of like, 'Maybe this character, maybe this character,' and Agatha was central in that conversation. In the early stages, she functioned as more of a mentor, and then as we got into the room and started really legitimately breaking the episodes, it became clear that having more of a proper antagonist would serve the structure really well, so she increasingly moved in that direction."

"But we didn't lose sight of the potential for her to be a mentor and a teacher and a partner and a confidant. All of that still infused all of their scenes together. And we like to say that there's a version of the story where Wanda and Agatha walk off into the sunset together, you know? You could kind of see it, and I think that led to better writing for the two of them, those gray tones in there."

It wouldn't be at all surprising for Wanda to turn to Agatha for help in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, though we've heard nothing about the actress being part of that sequel just yet. Either way, the character definitely has a future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and given how popular Hahn's work was, there's no way Kevin Feige won't want to bring her back ASAP.

What do you hope the future holds in store for Agatha Harkness in the MCU?

In a way Agatha still works as a mentor as she teaches and unveils a lot of things to Wanda, albeit for her own benefit.

@HannibalLecter - The thing is wanda knows there are sorcerers who don't seem to want her powers or something.

Just realised:
Agatha can use her runes to stop Wanda's powers
Agatha claims Wanda is more powerful than the Sorcerer Supreme (Doctor Strange)

So if Wanda's powers can be stopped by runes, then what is to stop Wanda from just using the runes on any magical entity who is lower tier than her, including Doctor Strange?

It kinda ruins the appeal of any future magic villain - as just throw up runes and then they lose powers in that area and Wanda can mind frick them into submission

@Scarilian - I wonder if they'll really focus on the "witches spell" aspect of that. I could see them saying for sorcerers it will be different. It's.

@Scarilian - But Wanda wasn't more powerful than Doctor Strange, instead she's destined to be more powerful than Doctor Strange but she's still has a lot to learn about her powers as the show points out. Nobody ever taught Wanda how to use her magic but after learning from the Darkhold she might top Strange in her next appearance.

@HannibalLecter - Wanda is definitely more powerful than Strange. The difference is her power was basically given to her at its full potential. She just doesn't understand it.

Its like in House of M and Avengers Disassembled. Strange explains that Wanda power to use magic with no real limits is innate, while his power was taught and learned. So he has a much greater understanding of what to do and what not to do. That limits him because he's not willing to use something like Chaos magic. Meanwhile, Wanda is using Chaos magic and doesn't even realize it.

@Scarilian - In order for the runes to do what you are suggesting requires that the area encompassed by the runes be, for want of a better word, "owned" by the caster. They really did not go very far into what is involved in doing that but Wanda's Hex structure was sufficient for her to hang her runes.

I suspect the larger the area that a witch can cover the stronger she is , all other things being equal. I also suspect that getting larger comes at a cost of some sort so that conceivably a smaller rune structure might be locally stronger. YMMV.

I'm sure she'll be back as an ally in a future project

She’ll definitely be back in some capacity, how they mend things who knows but it’ll happen.

Hahn’s too talented to be wasted and she’s not dead so there’s no reason to sideline her forever.

@Cbmfilmjunkie - I was hoping after her performance in the final two episodes that her character would die but to be fair I felt that way about wanda after age of ultron so maybe she will be more tolerable h fer different direction

Yeah, I liked that despite being an antagonist she still helped Wanda develop her powers. Just made her that much more interesting imo.

She’ll be back. And yes probably in more of an uneasy ally/mentor role. After the huge success of WandaVision I could easily see Marvel wanting to do a Scarlet Witch series (or movie) with Agatha as a co-lead, with Agatha teaching Wanda so that she can defeat someone hugely menacing like Chthon (or Pandemonium or Lore or the Emerald Warlock).

@TheUnworthyThor -
Maybe in a new Scarlet Witch show.

@Battabing - Yeah, my guess would be a Disney+ show titled Scarlet Witch, maybe based on the James Robinson run, where the is a problem with witchcraft and Wanda needs Agatha’s help.

The fact that they wrapped their head around "who will be the antagonist" in a series like WandaVision really shows the mentality of the MCU. I, for one, am tired of most of the Marvel villains being "what if *insert protagonist here* but evil and opposing color scheme". Wanda being the main villain of the show in a tragic sense would've been just fine with me. That's kind of the direction they were going until the "Agatha all along" reveal. Coincidentally, after that twist is when I started to feel my enjoyment of the show wane.

@BroskiTroski - The scarlet witch was the villain though. It was never going to be a cliche wanda vs military.

@BroskiTroski - I felt like at the very end though it did come across that Wanda was the villain. Agatha was the antagonist but not really the villain, she caused conflict with Wanda to drive the plot but when leaving Westview it was pretty clear the town residents feared her more than Agatha

@BroskiTroski - It seems that they did not even wanted her to be fully mental everything was just in a weird middle ground.

“ it became clear that having more of a proper antagonist would serve the structure really well, so she increasingly moved in that direction."

Really wish there was more ambiguity behind the series. That would’ve served the story much better IMO.

Hahn crushed it as Agnes though...wasn’t big on her transformation to Harkness but I’m looking forward to seeing more of her.
